The aim of this study is to investigate feasibility of computer navigation-assisted surgery in particularly difficult cases of locally advanced (LARC) and recurrent (LRRC) rectal cancer where the standard surgical strategy is expected to result in incomplete tumour removal. The investigators hypothesize that computer navigation-assisted surgery can facilitate improved anatomic orientation in the pelvis enabling tumour removal with free margins in these cases.
The present study aimed to review the characteristics and outcome of early-onset rectal cancer in a subset of Egyptian patients aged 40 years or less. Since the previous studies assessed this point of research in CRC overall, the investigators opted to focus upon rectal cancer alone since it may represent a separate category, distinct from colon cancer, in this age group with regards to presentation, tumor behavior, and outcome.

To understand and analyse the global impact of COVID-19 on outpatient services, inpatient care, elective surgery, and perioperative colorectal cancer care, a DElayed COloRectal cancer surgery (DECOR-19) survey was conducted in collaboration with numerous international colorectal societies with the objective of obtaining several learning points from the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on our colorectal cancer patients which will assist us in the ongoing management of our colorectal cancer patients and to provide us safe oncological pathways for future outbreaks.
Local recurrence rates in rectal cancer have reduced dramatically since the introduction of the total mesorectal excision (TME) technique and neoadjuvant (chemo)radiotherapy (C))RT) to overall rates of 5-year local recurrence to 5-10%. However, distal rectal cancers have a tendency to spread to lateral lymph nodes and it was recently shown that patients with enlarged lateral lymph nodes of ≥7mm short-axis size have a considerable chance of a local recurrence: 15-20%. This is regardless of CRT with TME in two retrospective cohorts (Lateral Node Consortium and Snapshot Rectal Cancer 2016 study). According to the Lateral Node Consortium study, this rate was significantly reduced to <6% when performing a lateral lymph node dissection (LLND) after (C)RT + TME. A major drawback of these recent multi-center studies is their retrospective nature. Therefore, in the Netherlands, radiologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons and pathologists have recently been educated and trained to enhance knowledge and awareness of LLNs and to implement nerve-sparing minimally invasive LLND. The LaNoReC trial is a prospective registration study aimed at evaluating oncological outcomes after multi-disciplinary training. The main question of this study is whether, after dedicated training and the performance of LLNDs, the lateral local recurrence rate in rectal cancers with enlarged nodes (≥7mm) can be reduced to below 6%.
The conventional intersphincteric resection (ISR) for low rectal cancer requires a combined abdominal and perineal approach, and followed with a handsewn coloanal anastomosis, which is time consuming and difficult to accomplish. A complete laparoscopic abdominal approach partial intersphincteric resection has been proved to be a safe and feasible alternative for low rectal cancer treatment, with the advantages of technical convenience and avoiding a permanent ostomy. But there are few reports concerning differences in clinical outcomes between patients with or without neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy undergoing partial ISR surgery. Therefore, it is necessary to compare the functional outcomes (including anal and sexual function, and postoperative quality of life [QOL]) and oncologic outcomes of patients who underwent completely abdominal approach laparoscopic partial ISR surgery after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, with those who received ISR surgery directly. Furthermore, the operation difficulty between the above two groups is also worthy of intensive study.
Malnutrition and loss of muscle mass frequently occur in patients undergoing chemotherapy and can negatively effect therapy outcome. Especially patients with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract are often affected by malnutrition. Therefore, this study aims to examine changes in nutritional status of patients with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract during chemotherapy. Findings of this study will help to improve nutritional treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Following colorectal surgery, many patients face a combination of physical and emotional problems for a long period of time. Symptoms such as pain, fatigue, and disturbed bowel and sexual function, as well as problems in social and role functioning, inevitably affect the patients' well-being. Therefore, evaluation of the self-reported quality of life (QoL) is becoming increasingly important in clinical trials. The investigators aimed to compare long term health related life quality (HRQoL) results of laparoscopic approach with open approach in patients with sphincter preserving resections for rectal cancer at a single-center.
