Social relationships are important to people and it affects their quality of life, morbidity and mortality. This is a randomised controlled trial studying the effect of including older people with impaired social relationships and a perception of loneliness at workshops, at The Storm P. Museum - a museum about the well known Danish cartoonist Robert Storm Petersen. The hypothesis is, that by including older lonely people with a impaired social participation in these workshops, they will increase the participants health related quality of life. The investigators also hypothesis, that the intervention will improve the participants perception of loneliness, social participation and physical function. The intervention consist of a series of workshops at the Storm P. Museum. At these workshops the participants will create memory material for nursing home residents with dementia. The museum staff will facilitate a process of storytelling, using events, significant stories and artistic works by Storm P. and encourage the participants, by means of the "narrative interview" method to share similar stories from their life.
In patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) and foot ulcers wound healing is an important goal which can normally only be achieved after sufficient treatment of the underlying ischemia (revascularization either by an operation, e. g. bypass, or a catheter intervention). After successful revascularization everything should be done to improve wound healing because this regularly takes weeks up to several months. One possibility to speed up healing could be treatment with the VADOplex device which delivers an automatic intermittent painless compression of the sole of the foot thereby increasing perfusion of the leg. This system can be easily operated by patients themselves and at home. Our goal is to prove that the VADOPlex system accelerates healing up and improves quality of life.
Exercise training has been established as a feasible and safe intervention during or after neoplastic treatment in breast cancer patients. Numerous studies have shown that exercise can prevent and control various treatment-related side effects including functional limitation, physical capacity, anxiety and sleep disturbance. In the long-term, an active life style has been demonstrated to increase survival in women, who maintain a moderate level of exercise per week (30 or 75 minutes of brisk walking 5 days per week). Specifically, active breast cancer survivors have a 51-85% lower cancer specific mortality and 33-82% lower all cause of mortality. But despite this, most breast cancer patients reduce their physical activity levels during and after cancer treatment. In 2010, a roundtable meeting of American College of Sport Medicine published guidelines for cancer survivors, defining that the recommended amount of exercise was 150 minutes per week of aerobic exercise of moderate-intensity and 2 or 3 days per week of strength training that included exercise for major muscle groups. But only 30-47% of breast cancer survivors follow these exercise recommendations. In most clinical settings, information by the oncologist to keep physical active is part of the recommendation. Yet some breast cancer patients find it difficult to begin or maintain the minimal activity levels recommended by the experts. A typical obstacle includes lack of directions from experts, which can assure the safety and feasibility of the exercise that they perform. Moreover, important personal aspects can have major influence on the exercise preference, including certain food choice and dietary intakes, education level or the preference of a face-to-face exercise counseling by a professional. A cancer diagnosis is recognized as "teachable moment", where patients are particularly motivated for lifestyle changes. So it is important to approach the patients with adequate interventions that consider the different needs in order to get a healthier behavior among the breast cancer patients. Taking this into account, the hypothesis of this pilot project is that a guided integrated group exercise program, which includes an educational program on healthy life style, will increase the adherence of breast cancer survivors to exercise and a healthy diet. Therefore the aim of this pilot study was to investigate if a comprehensive and specific group exercise program, which includes dietary and exercise information, could increase leisure-time exercise in women with breast cancer.

Background and Purposes: Cancer is the leading cause of our mortality. It threatens people's life and quality of life (QOL). Although the incidence of cancer is still rising, with the promotion of cancer screening and progression of medical technology, its survival rate is improving. However, the sequels from cancer or its treatment and the side effects impact the patients along with their lives. Breast cancer is the most incident cancer in women with high survival rate, continuing care after the diagnosis and treatment is much more needed. This study is using breast cancer as an example to establish a continuing service model. This study aims (1) to establish a tailored, continuing care model which emphasizes on breast cancer patients' function. (2) To investigate the effectiveness of the new care model comparing with the control. (3) To find a cutting point of bioelectrical impedance to identify late development of lymphedema. Methods: This is a randomized-controlled trial expanding for 3 years. Women being newly diagnosed with breast cancer and first OPD visit after operation at National Taiwan University Hospital will be invited to join the surveillance and care system. Exclusion criteria are: younger than 20 years old, stage IV, recurrent or both sides involved, with other cancer diagnosis, functional impairments from previous injury or operation on the affected upper extremity and other physical or mental problem to influence the test or filling the questionnaire. It is estimated there will be 100 subjects participate this study every year. After the initial evaluation, they will be randomly allocated to surveillance group (SG) or general care group (CG). Totally, in this three-year study, there will be 200 subjects (100/group), follow-up for 0.5 to 2 years. SG will have health education brochure and free class from the first visit post-operatively but CG will only have the brochure. Moreover, SG will be screened every time when they visit the clinics. If there is any early sign of impairment, professional advice and counseling will be given additionally. In these visits, if CG raises any health-related question, they can be answered. Detailed physical examination to identify their impairments and QOL are at 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 months after operation for both groups. Patients' characteristics, functional status, QOL will be presented by descriptive statistics. T-test/Mann-Whitney U test will be used to compare the differences between patients in two groups. Survival analysis and log-rank test will be used to show the prevalence of various functional impairments and test their difference. ROC curve will be used to find the cutting point for prediction of lymphedema. Expected Results: It is expected (1) to set up the education program and brochure for breast cancer patients. (2) to establish a continuing surveillance and care model for breast cancer patients and extending to all cancers. (3) Women in the new care model will have less impairment and higher QOL comparing with women at the same post-operative stage. (4) To find out the prevalence of functional impairments from the data of control group. (5) A cutting point of bioelectrical impedance to identify late development of lymphedema will be found. (6) To train the team members of cancer care and research.
Surgery in persons of older AGE (SAGE) is an observational study of patients aged 60 years and older undergoing major colorectal surgery. That is to say we are looking at how older patients recovery following surgery, and that patients who volunteer to take part will absolutely not have any changes made to patients planned treatment or surgery. Patients (identified by their Consultant) will be asked if they would like to participate in the study, agreeing to undertake an additional questionnaire, blood test, provide a urine specimen and several basic physical tests during the pre-assessment visit taking an additional 30-45 minutes. This will not affect their treatment in any way. Participation is voluntary. At the time of the pre-assessment process the patient will then be approached by a researcher, who will explain the study in more detail and obtain written consent. The questionnaire is a combination of questions, which have been used in other similar studies and may be used to identify people who are fitter than others to undergo surgery. These questions are not too dissimilar to those that may be asked during the pre-assessment process. In fact some hospitals use some of these questions (but not usually all) routinely during a hospital admission process. Several basic physical tests will be performed: hand grip strength test and some basic walking and chair rising tests. These will be supervised by the trained researcher to ensure they are carried out safely. A small blood sample (20ml) will be obtained, ideally at the same time as blood is taken for the standard pre-operative assessment process. We will also take urine specimens. The blood sample and urine specimens will be saved for tests later. There are several potential blood and urine tests that may be related to physical frailty/impairment and the aging process. The patient will undergo surgery as planned and be discharged from hospital. No researcher will interfere with the planned care or conduct any data collection at this point. At approximately 1. 3, 6 and 12 months following surgery the patient will be asked to complete the questionnaire either in person, by phone or mail. If reviewed in a clinic at the time of their postoperative follow-up checks, then we will repeat the basic physical tests again also. The patient's notes will be reviewed by a researcher (who is also a doctor) to see what operation was performed, the length of hospital stay, and if any problems developed. The patients GP may also be contacted if additional information is required. This study, while based on several others, is the first of its kind to see how persons recover after surgery being assessed over one year. We will recruit for 18 months across two hospitals aiming to recruit 200 patients during this time.

In 2007, the Haifa and Western Galilee district of the CHS set out to test the feasibility of integrating complementary medicine (CM) within the CHS Oncology Service. In 2008, the CHS established the Integrative Oncology Program with the goal of addressing patient concerns and improving quality of life parameters during chemotherapy and advanced disease. The study hypothesis is that integrated medicine consultation and treatment provided within the oncology department may improve patients' concerns and well-being.
