Exercise for Women With Peripheral Arterial Disease

Hypothesis #1. Supervised exercise rehabilitation will result in greater increases in exercise performance, peripheral vascular function, and health-related quality of life than compared to the attention-control group. Hypothesis #2. The change in peripheral vascular function will be predictive of improved exercise performance following the supervised exercise program.

This study should state if the GPS technique could be used in clinical routine in order to assess walking capacity in PAD patients. Patients will be assessed a first time (test 1) and six months later (test 2).

Personalized Cardiovascular Risk Information to Initiate and Maintain Health Behavior Changes

The investigators propose an evaluation that will assess three important components of risk communication: 1. provide patients with personalized risk communication using the risk calculator developed by FIMDM and health information taken from the Living with Coronary Artery Disease program 2. provide personalized tailored patient feedback to help initiate and maintain specific cardiovascular CVD-related behaviors(e.g., medication adherence, exercise, diet, smoking cessation) to reduce their risks. 3. evaluate how this feedback can be incorporated into clinical care by examining 3 month patient outcome and provider responses to the risk information.

Far Infrared Therapy on Peripheral Artery Disease in Hemodialysis Patients

The prevalence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) defined as ankle-brachial index (ABI) less than 0.9 was about 15~30% in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD), which was higher than those with normal renal function. A lower ABI and a higher brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) are good markers to predict the risk of PAD and atherosclerosis respectively. In addition, baPWV>2,100 cm/s was shown to be related to potential PAD. ABI <0.9 was positively associated with vascular access failure in hemodialysis (HD) patients and our previous study has demonstrated that far infrared (FIR) therapy can improve access flow and unassisted patency of atrioventricular (AV) fistula. The aims of this study are to evaluate (1) the frequency of and (2) risk factors associated with abnormal ABI and PWV as well as (3) the effect of FIR on ABI and PWV and markers related to endothelial dysfunction in HD patients.
