The purpose of this study is to assess the test-retest reliability of an infant RRV paradigm which will allow researchers to study food reinforcement among infant of 9-18 months of age. By understanding the origins of food reinforcement, future interventions can be conducted to help overweight and obese population to alter their reinforcing values of food at a young age, perhaps during infancy.

The obesity epidemic continues to be a major public health concern, with 38% of US adults and 17% of children obese. One factor that has been highlighted as a robust predictor of weight outcomes is the relative reinforcing value (RRV) of food, or how rewarding one finds eating compared to alternative activities. An emerging body of literature has built upon the observed relationship between the RRV of food and weight by hypothesizing that the promotion of alternative reinforcers, or rewarding activities that could take the place of eating, offers a novel approach to decreasing excess energy intake and combatting obesity. We aim to integrate distinct bodies of literature and fill a gap in the evidence by testing whether parenting intervention messages delivered and practiced in the context of shared activities can decrease the RRV of food by making parent-child interactions more rewarding. The ultimate goal of this research is to demonstrate that such an intervention can increase children's motivation to interact with their parent instead of eating a favorite food, demonstrating the potential for positive parent-child interactions to become an alternative source of pleasure.
This proposal involves a collaboration with the Massachusetts Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs. The goal is to evaluate the efficacy of youth empowerment intervention targeting sugar-sweetened beverage consumption on childhood obesity among youth. The 12-session 6-week intervention consists of health and narrative sessions and youth-led activities. For this cluster randomized controlled trial [RCT} at 10 sites, the investigators will recruit 45 parent-child pairs per site for a total of 450 parent-child pairs. The primary outcome is child participants' body mass index (BMI) z scores. Secondary outcomes include children's sugar-sweetened beverage intake, water intake, and youth empowerment. Change in outcomes over time among participants in the intervention sites will be compared to change in outcomes over time among participants
To pilot a stand-alone mobile phone intervention with Latino caregivers of 2- to 5-year olds, using a prospective control group design, to assess feasibility and preliminary effect sizes on children's BMI changes (primary outcome) and dietary and physical activity changes (secondary outcomes) at 6 months post-baseline, in preparation for a larger randomized trial to evaluate the intervention's efficacy.
Aims: The principal aim of this study is to evaluate a model of Child Centred Health Dialog (CCHD) in Child Health Services (CHS) aiming to promote a healthy lifestyle in families and prevent overweight and obesity in preschool children. The specific aims are to compare CCHD with usual care and to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the CCHD for all children and specifically for children with overweight at the age of 4 years and to compare parents self-efficacy and feeding practices in families that received either CCHD or usual care Methods: A clustered non-blinded Randomised Control Trial was set up comparing usual care with a structured multicomponent child-centred health dialogue consisting of two parts: 1) a universal part directed to all children and 2) a targeted part for families where the child is identified with overweight.
BEAM is a multi-site longitudinal cohort study of hypothalamic gliosis, central regulation of appetite and weight gain in children. Participants will be recruited from the community in the greater Seattle and greater Baltimore area. All participants will consent to enroll in the 24-month study during which they will complete 5 in-person study visits.
Comprehensive lifestyle interventions are recommended for the treatment of adolescent obesity; however, evidence suggests that they are not as effective in teens as they are in children and adults. Recent evidence supports that shifting the timing of energy intake earlier in the day has led to improved weight loss outcomes among adults with overweight and obesity. Given that adolescents traditionally consume the majority of their daily energy intake late in the day (past 5PM), this approach may improve the effectiveness of traditional behavioral weight control interventions in teens. Therefore, the primary aim of the proposed research is to pilot a novel adaptation of an evidence-based adolescent weight control intervention in which adolescents will be randomized to consume the majority of their daily energy needs earlier versus later in the day. More specifically, 40 adolescents, ages 13-17, with obesity (BMI>95% for age and sex) will be randomized to a 16-week evidence-based weight control intervention that has the participant consume >50 percent of their total energy intake before 3PM (i.e. at breakfast / lunch; BFL) or after 3PM (i.e. dinner; DIN). Assessments will take place at baseline and 16 weeks (post-treatment). The proposed study will test 1) the adherence and feasibility of the BFL vs. DIN interventions as measured by the average number of days on which daily energy was consumed in accordance with the prescribed eating plan and, secondarily, mean session attendance, 2) if the BFL group will have significantly greater reductions in BMI post-treatment as compared to the DIN group, 3) if there are differences in sleep duration and quality between groups, and finally, as an exploratory aim, whether there are differences in dietary quality between groups. The proposed research is significant, as it addresses obesity in teens. It is innovative as the timing of meals and snacks have not been manipulated in adolescents in the context of behavioral weight control. Moreover, the study will shed light on whether doing so improves sleep and could help to untangle how sleep and weight gain relate in adolescents.
