RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy in treating patients who have stage IC, stage IIB, stage III, or stage IV ovarian epithelial, fallopian tube, or peritoneal cancer that has not been previously treated.

RATIONALE: Bortezomib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for tumor cell growth. Bortezomib may help carboplatin kill more tumor cells by making tumor cells more sensitive to the drug. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of combining bortezomib with carboplatin in treating patients who have recurrent or progressive ovarian epithelial, primary peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancer.
