Mechanical Ventilation Parameters in HAP Patients

Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in patients in intensive care often requires the mechanical ventilation (MV). Management and weaning from MV are given by specificity of this type of pulmonary inflammation. Enrolled in the retrospective, observational study were all patients older than 18 years staying at the ICU of University Hospital in Olomouc, between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2016. The determination of the parameters of the MV, ICU length of stay, hospital length of stay and mortality in HAP group were compared with the control group of patients without HAP.

MR Guided Focused Ultrasound for Treatment of Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is often a result of direct diseases of peripheral or central nervous system with an estimated prevalence of 8% of adults and this pain is associated with significant consequences because of longer symptom duration and severity than many of the other pain syndromes. Functional brain imaging has revealed that many regions of the brain are engaged by painful events, but specific areas such as the thalamus have been markedly implicated. The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility and safety of MRI-guided focused ultrasound treatment using the ExAblate Transcranial System in patients suffering from Neuropathic pain. This treatment modality offers non-invasive precise treatment potential for these patients.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 8 and 12 weeks of treatment with a fixed dose combination (FDC) of elbasvir (EBR) 50 mg + grazoprevir (GZR) 100 mg (i.e., MK-5172A) as assessed by the percentage of participants with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype (GT) 4 infection that achieve sustained virologic response (HCV ribonucleic acid [RNA] < Lower Limit of Quantification [LLOQ]) 12 weeks after the end of study therapy (SVR12). This study also evaluated the safety and tolerability of EBR/GZR.

Effects of Atorvastatin in Graves' Orbitopathy (GO)

Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is the most common extra-thyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease (GD), being observed in ~25% of patients. Besides genetic and demographical variables, risk factors associated with the development of GO in GD patients are known to be inadequate control of hyperthyroidism, radioiodine treatment, and smoking. In a large retrospective study conducted in more than 8,000 individuals with GD it was observed that treatment with 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme reductase inhibitors, better known as statins, is associated with a ~40% reduced risk of developing GO in GD patients. The findings were interpreted as the consequence of the anti-inflammatory action of statins, being GO notoriously an autoimmune, inflammatory conditions. Statins are widely used for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, for which they are quite effective. The possibility that their "protective" effect in terms of GO development in GD patients, as observed by Stein et al., was simply due to their hypolipemic actions was not considered. To evaluate the possibility that the findings reflected lowering of cholesterol rather than a direct anti-inflammatory effect of statins a prospective, observational study to assess the association between GO and high cholesterol levels and/or the relationship between the degree and/or activity of GO and hypercholesterolemia is ongoing. Preliminary findings suggest that GO is more severe and active in patients with high cholesterol levels. On the basis of these observations, the present randomized clinical trial was designed to be performed in hypercholesterolemic patients with GD and moderate-to-severe and active GO, aimed at investigating if lowering of cholesterol levels with statins is associated with a better outcome of GO.

Subjects with recurrent C. difficile infection will receive an oral dose of CP101 capsules one time in Treatment Group I or matching placebo one time in Treatment Group II. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of CP101 to prevent recurrence of C. difficile. Subjects with confirmed C. difficile recurrence within 8 weeks after administration of study drug (CP101 or placebo) may be eligible to enroll in the open-label extension study (CP101-CDI-E02) and will receive CP101.
