Weighted Blankets for Sleep Disturbance Among Children With ADHD

Many children with ADHD suffer from sleep disorders and dysfunction, which may affect development and well-being. According to the clinicians, some children find relief from restlessness and difficulty sleeping by using weighted blankets which have been proposed to reduce restlessness and stress via sensory integration and to calm the child by stimulating the sense of touch, muscles and joints. However, evidence for an effect on sleep is scarce, and only one RCT has investigated the effect of weighted blankets among children with ADHD. Using a RCT design, the aim is to investigate the effect on sleep disorders and dysfunction in children with ADHD aged 5-12 years by (1) using a weighted blanket during night and daytime in addition to usual treatment, compared to (2) usual treatment and a non-weighted sham blanket, with the primary outcome being differences in total sleep time. Results will support health- and social professionals who are involved in the treatment of children with ADHD.

In this observational, retrospective study we will primarily aim at evaluating the independent role of baseline clinical and laboratory parameters, including TKV, in the prediction of long term chronic GFR decline and other clinical outcomes and, secondarily, the relationships between GFR and TKV changes over time, in a cohort of ADPKD patients with Stage IV CKD on chronic treatment with octreotide LAR and routinely monitored with serial GFR, TKV and clinical evaluations, at the outpatient clinic of the Nephrology Unit of the Azienda Socio-Sanitaria Territoriale Papa Giovanni XXIII, Bergamo, Italy.

Steps Towards Osteoarthritis Prevention

Optimal knee joint loading, which refers to the forces acting on the knee caused by daily activities such as daily steps, plays an essential role in maintaining knee articular cartilage health and reducing the risk of osteoarthritis (OA). After anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), individuals take fewer daily steps as compared to uninjured controls resulting in insufficient knee joint loading to joint tissues, but it is unclear how changes in daily steps impact knee joint cartilage health in OA development. Therefore, the overall single arm, longitudinal pre-test post-test study objective is to determine the mechanistic links between knee joint loading as measured by daily steps and comprehensive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures of knee joint cartilage health post-ACLR. The central hypothesis is that individuals post-ACLR who take low daily steps will demonstrate deconditioned, less resilient cartilage characterized by poor tibiofemoral cartilage composition and greater cartilage strain.

Parkinsonian Syndromes (PDS) with predominant motor dysfunction include progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), multiple system atrophy (MSA) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD). Current treatment options for PDS are extremely limited due to the less understanding of disease pathophysiology and lack of therapeutic targets. Combining the results of previous studies and our group's previous research, sixty qualified PDS patients would be enrolled to conduct a prospective single-center randomized sham controlled clinical trial to verify the new therapeutic options that can improve symptoms and effectively slow the progression of the disease.

An Escape Room Intervention to Help Improve Breast Cancer Patients' Ability to Navigate Online Access to Nutrition Information

This clinical trial evaluates an educational escape room intervention for improving awareness of and concern about breast cancer misinformation and reducing vulnerability to believing cancer misinformation among patients with stage I-III breast cancer. Misinformation, or communication about health information that is inaccurate or false, can have serious health consequences for those that believe it. The rise of the access to and use of various sources of information on the internet such as websites and social media has caused the spread of misinformation and disinformation to grow rapidly, resulting in negative consequences on health outcomes. Cancer misinformation, in particular, has become an increasingly prevalent issue that poses a real threat to the many cancer patients in the United States. The educational escape room intervention is a game designed to teach participants how to discern whether cancer nutrition information is accurate or may potentially be misinformation. Participants are immersed in the narrative while solving puzzles to learn key themes such as the need to talk to their doctors, looking for scientific studies, as well as avoiding fads and trends, miracle cures, anecdotal evidence, and targeted and clickbait ads.
