Filter by:Brief Summary: The aim of this study is to explore the initial feasibility and acceptability of (a) Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) adapted for ACS patients; (b) the group videoconferencing delivery medium; and (c) dried blood spot research procedures, to inform refinements for a subsequent pilot RCT.
Ambulation in pregnancy has been proposed to decrease stress and anxiety, increasing preterm birth. Whether ambulation is causally related to latency is unknown. The FitBit will be used for tracking the number of steps taken daily by each participant, and for encouraging the intervention group to walk. The FitBit is the most widely used physical activity tracker in medical research, and its use has been validated for research use in pregnant women. The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether ambulation in patients with preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM) prolongs latency.
Although hearing aids are the most common treatment for hearing loss, and have the potential to help seniors stay active and productive, almost 50% of them who receive hearing aids rarely if ever use them, a state of affairs sometimes referred to as "the hearing aid in the drawer" syndrome. clEAR's customized auditory brain training has been shown to be effective in improving adults' abilities to recognize speech, in reducing their perceptual effort associated with listening with a hearing loss, and in increasing their confidence to engage in everyday conversations. In the proposed research, we will determine whether older adults who receive hearing aids for the first time report higher satisfaction with their new hearing aids and have longer daily use time as a result of having completed clEAR's auditory brain training program for new hearing aid users.
The chronic phase of the study will evaluate the effects of pre-exercise and post-exercise ingestion of a multi-ingredient supplement on adaptations to a 6-week exercise program consisting of both resistance training and high intensity aerobic exercise, using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Participants will complete an enrollment/familiarization visit, a baseline testing session, followed by a 6-week supervised exercise intervention, and post-testing session identical to baseline testing. Participants will be randomized during the baseline session to groups receiving either 1) Active Treatment (pre-post supplementation), 2) placebo (noncaloric beverage), or 3) control, not participating in exercise or consuming a treatment. During the supervised 6-week resistance training program, participants will complete a moderate-intensity warm-up, a full-body resistance training workout (2 x per week) and an interval training session (1 x per week). Thirty-minutes prior to each training session, and within 15 minutes post-exercise, participants will consume their randomly assigned treatment beverage. Body composition, blood markers of muscle damage/recovery, strength, and performance tests will be measured before (baseline) and after training (Post) to evaluate the effects of supplementation. All data collection will be conducted by the Principal Investigator and Research Assistants. All subjects will report to the Applied Physiology Laboratory and Human Performance Center in Fetzer Hall for all testing and training sessions, which will span approximately 8 weeks.
This is a single arm, open-label, non-randomized, dose-escalation, phase I study to determine the safety and efficacy of CNCT19 in adult patients with relapsed or refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
This protocol corresponds to a prospective, multicentre, open label, phase II study designed to evaluate the efficacy of CPX-351 in elderly patients with secondary or high-risk AML. The clinical trial is divided into pre-treatment, treatment (induction and consolidation cycles) and follow-up periods and consists of a single arm group. Patients will be enrolled at diagnosis to follow the treatment arm. After that will start induction chemotherapy with CPX-351 regimen (14 days maximum screening period). Once a patient have been evaluated for response and recovered from major complications, he/she will start second course (consolidation 1), unless the bone marrow and peripheral blood assessment is showing less than a complete response, then a second induction may be offered. If a CR or CRi is obtained after the second induction course, patients will start the third course after a rest and recovery period. Patients aged between 60 and 65 years old are recommended to undergo an allo-SCT after first consolidation if they are considered fit for this procedure and they have a full matched related or unrelated donor. Patients aged between 65 and 70 years old can be proposed for an allo-SCT in CR/CRi if they have a composite HSCT co-morbidity index /age less than 4 and a suitable fully matched related donor. In patients over 70 years old, an allo-SCT in first CR should be avoided although the decision should be taken on an individual basis. Patients with CR/CRi who are not considered for an allo-SCT, will follow 6 maintenance cycles with modified courses of CPX-351 schedule. Patients showing unacceptable toxicity along all therapeutic phases that, in consideration of the investigator, will be prematurely discontinued. All patients will be followed-up for survival. The study will be analyzed on an intention to treat basis. Bone marrow and response assessments will be done after each induction and consolidation course, and every 3 months during the first 12 months after starting maintenance therapy. Patients will be followed-up for a minimum period of 1 year after the enrolment of the last patient. Additionally, after the end of the trial, patients will be followed-up for 2 years in order to verify survival and the evolution of the disease. Study design allows a maximum of 59 patients.
The acute study will evaluate pre- and post-exercise ingestion of a multi-ingredient supplement in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design. Participants will complete one enrollment visit, in which they will sign a consent form and complete a health history questionnaire. Participants will complete two interventions, with three visits each (6 visits total), in which a treatment beverage (pre/post supplement, or non-caloric placebo) will be consumed within 30 minutes prior to exercise and within 15 minutes post-exercise, in random order. Total time from enrollment to completion will be at least 14 days. Testing visits will be separated by a minimum of 7 days of rest to allow for recovery and washout, based on a half-life of ≤8 hours for all ingredients present in the supplement.
Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair (VHR) is usually performed by reducing the contents in the hernia sac from the abdominal cavity and then covering the defect from the inside with a mesh, i.e. Intraperitoneal Onlay Mesh (IPOM). This means that the hernia sac is left in situ anterior to the mesh. This may, however, predispose for the development of fluid in the hernia sac, i.e. seroma. The risk of seroma development may be reduced if a the defect is closed before the mesh is applied. Closing the defect may, however, cause tension and pain from the abdominal wall. Instead of closing the defect, the part of the peritoneum constituting the hernia sac may be used for closing the defect. In this case, the peritoneum is dissected from the edges of the hernia sac and then used as a flap that is fixated to the edges of the hernia sac on the opposite side. In a previous study (BriClo), we compared defect closure as control group with peritoneal bridging. That study showed an increased risk for postoperative pain if the defect was closed. In order to evaluate whether peritoneal bridging reduces the seroma development following ventral hernia repair, we are undertaking a double-blind randomized controlled trial comparing no closure of the defect with peritoneal bridging. The goal is to randomize 100 patients undergoing laparoscopic ventral hernia repair. Clinical follow-up is performed three months, six months and one year after surgery. At all occasions, the patient is requested to fill in the Ventral Hernia Pain Questionnaire (VHPQ) and an investigation is done in order to assess the presence of seromas, recurrences or other local complications. Duration until return to work is registered. One year after surgery, computer tomography is performed in order to quantify the volume of seromas.
Clinical Trial of Transnasal Humidified Rapid-Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange (THRIVE) Oxygen in Women having Planned Caesarean Delivery. Cohort study investigating the efficacy of THRIVE pre-oxygenation using pre-determined number of vital capacity breaths and comparing the efficacy to face mask pre-oxygenation. Aimed to recruit ASA 1-2 term pregnant women having elective caesarean section.
This trial studies how well physical therapy and progressive muscle relaxation works in improving physical performance and mood in older patients with stage IIIA-B or IV lung cancer who are undergoing treatment. Improving physical performance and mood may help older patients maintain an independent lifestyle by helping to improve their resilience, the ability to bounce back to normal functioning after a stressor or intervening health event such as treatment or disease progression. Giving physical therapy and progressive muscle relaxation may work in improving symptoms and quality of life in patients with lung cancer.
