Symax International Study

The uncemented Symax hip stem is developed through optimization of the uncemented Omnifit hip stem. The Symax stem design combines an anatomical anteverted proximal geometry with a straight distal section. The proximal part is coated with a biomimetic hydroxyapatite (HA) coating for improved osseointegration to enhance load transfer and to minimize proximal bone loss. The distal part is treated with an anodization surface treatment in order to prevent distal bone apposition, which is expected to prevent distal loading and reduce proximal stress shielding. Aim of this study is to report mid-term clinical performance and evaluate whether the radiographic features are in line with the design principles of the Symax hip in an international clinical study with 5 years of follow-up.

Precision Assessment of Platelet Rich Plasma for Joint Preservation

Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of premature disability in Veterans who develop knee OA at higher rates and younger ages than the population in general. For those with symptomatic early knee OA, who are years to decades away from meeting clinical indications for knee replacement surgery, knee injections have been a key treatment option. In recent years, platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections have gained increasing attention for improving pain and function in patients with knee OA. Basic science studies also suggest that PRP may also potentially stimulate repair responses to articular cartilage. However, the mechanisms of action of PRP in the treatment of knee OA are unknown. Because autologous blood is used, the PRP composition differs between patients. It is also unknown whether these differences in PRP composition affect clinical outcomes. This study will address these gaps and provide critical new and objective information on PRP treatment effects in Veterans and additional women with early knee OA important to improving clinical use of this new treatment.

Wright Medical Technology Metal-on-Metal 522 Post-Market Surveillance Study

This study is in response to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) call to all manufacturers with 510(k) clearance for metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) devices to conduct postmarket surveillance studies. MicroPort has various acetabular shells, acetabular liners, fixation screws, femoral heads, femoral stems, modular necks, and proximal bodies currently cleared for MoM indications. Together these components comprise the Wright Medical Technology (WMT) MoM THA System. The primary objective of the study is to determine the incidence of adverse local tissue reactions (ALTR) in each THA implanted with the WMT MoM THA System overall and to create cross-sectional epochs of ≤ 8 years and > 8 years, since implantation.

Exercise on Knee OA With the Star Excursion Balance Test

Osteoarthritis is a prevalent and disabling condition. Exercise is recommended to maintain strength and mobility, and to decrease pain. However, acute bouts of exercise have conflicting outcomes: they are fatiguing and they also can increase coordination and balance. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of a single bout of exercise (30 minutes) on balance performance of individuals with self-identified unilateral knee osteoarthritis. Balance will be assessed using the star excursion balance test before and after the exercise session. Differences in performance between the two star excursion balance tests will reflect the changes due to exercise. The changes between their balance performance on each limb will reflect the changes due to osteoarthritis.
