Filter by:Glucosamine is commonly used as a treatment for Osteoarthritis (OA). While oral administration remains the most commonly used route, topical administration could offer numerous advantages such as targeted delivery to affected joints and overcoming the negative effects of the passage of the drug through the digestive system. The objective of this study is to assess the bioavailability of glucosamine in the synovial fluid of osteoarthritic joints, following the topical application of a commercially available transdermal glucosamine cream. Joint fluid samples will be collected from 2 groups of participants with knee OA: the Control group will not be subjected to any treatment while the Test group will apply 2g of transdermal glucosamine cream 1 to 3 hours before the joint fluid collection. Glucosamine concentration will be determined and the results obtained from both groups will be compared. This trial will potentially provide data to support that glucosamine can cross the skin and be delivered to the affected joint fluid when formulated in a transdermal cream base.
Randomized clinical trial in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Sixty patients will be evaluated, divided in three groups (20 in each). One group A will be treated by dry needling in the vast internal, other group B will be treated with a standardized treatment protocol (electrotherapy and manual therapy), and group C will be treated with hialuronic acid. The investigators want to observe which technique is the most effective in osteoarthritis.
The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of an intervention to reduce sedentary behaviour in older adults waiting for hip and knee replacements. The study will be a randomised controlled trial design, including 2:1 randomisation into an intervention and usual care group respectively. A target of n=45 patients ≥60 years will be recruited from Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, UK, approximately 8-10 weeks before surgery, assisted by research nurses. The variable-length intervention, informed by Self-Determination Theory (SDT), will be composed of multiple behaviour change techniques, namely motivational interviewing, individualised feedback on sedentariness, goal-setting, environmental modification, self-monitoring, and social support. Assessments will occur at baseline, 1 week pre-surgery, and 6 weeks post-surgery. The primary outcome will be the feasibility of the trial, assessed quantitatively using study statistics, and with mixed-methods assessment of acceptability, practicality, adaption, satisfaction, and safety via questionnaires given to participants. Exploratory outcomes will include physical function, cardiometabolic biomarkers, measurement of SDT constructs, and both objective and subjective measurement daily activity and sedentariness. The study will last up to 18 weeks per participant.
This study compares analgesic effect between two techniques of adductor canal nerve block after total knee arthroplasty. The first group of the patients will receive intraoperative adductor canal nerve block; and the other group post operative ultrasound guided adductor canal nerve block. Investigators will measure postoperative opioid consumption, pain management and rehabilitation goals.

In Step 1 of the treatment, it is recommended to initiate therapy with chronic symptomatic slow-acting drugs for osteoarthritis (SYSADOAs). Among SYSADOAs, the evidence is greatest for the effect of chondroitin sulfate (CS). Sixty overweight subjects with knee osteoarthritis (OA) were recruited and randomly allocated to a group of treatment with 600 mg/d of non-animal Chondroitin sulphate (CS) or to a placebo group. These measurements were considered: Tegner Lysholm Knee Scoring (TLKS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis (WOMAC) index and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain were analyzed at time 0 and at 4 and 12 weeks. Health-related quality of life by ShortForm36, inflammation by C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) were also evaluated, together with a body composition assessment performed by DXA.
This project is aimed to investigate the feasibility of employing communication and sensor technologies for the patient after a knee operation. In the study, it is hypothesized that the effectiveness of postoperative rehabilitation programs might be improved by establishing electronic communication between healthcare professionals and the patients. It is also believed that users satisfaction and patients quality of life will be improved. The telerehabilitation program promises a synchronized communication as well as an individualized training program (by health professionals) based on the patient's electronic reports.
The primary aim of our study is to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Fullerton Advanced Balance (FAB-T) scale in individuals with osteoarthritis. The secondary aim of this study is to evaluate the responsiveness of the FAB-T scale to change in patients with osteoarthritis.
To determine the effects of ultrasound therapy and neuromuscular electrical stimulation on the muscle architecture and functional capacity of patients with knee osteoarthritis.
The primary purpose of this phase 2, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel group study is to provide an initial evaluation of two intra-articular (IA) injections of SM04690 (each at the dose of 0.07mg per 2mL injection) approximately six months apart into the target knee of moderately to severely symptomatic osteoarthritis (OA) subjects. Subjects who complete this 52-week long study will be eligible to enter the extension phase for an additional 52 weeks of treatment.
The study involves the isolation and cellular, molecular and proteomic characterization of synoviocytes, osteoblasts and chondrocytes from tissue samples obtained from patients undergoing surgery of endo or arthroplasty for osteoarthritis (Experimental Group) or interventions for other causes such as for example periarticular fracture requiring the implantation of a prosthesis (Control Group)
