Filter by:We propose to explore the effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) therapy in the pain management of postpartum women. A. Objectives - To determine if the addition of TENS therapy to the pain management of women post-cesarean section leads to less opioid medication use. - To evaluate the efficacy of TENS therapy as a means of alternative pain relief for women post-cesarean section with a history of opioid use. B. Hypotheses / Research Question(s) We hypothesize that patients that receive TENS therapy will report lower pain scores and request less opioid medication than the control group. We anticipate improved control in particular in the group of women with a history of opioid use. Additionally, we believe that the TENS therapy will show benefits in other postpartum outcomes including time to bowel movement, level of sedation, and time to out of bed. Overall, we anticipate that this pilot study will support the application of TENS therapy in postpartum pain management.
This is a prospective, randomized control trial to evaluate the impacts of preoperative cryoneurolysis treatment on opioid consumption with prehabilitation and resulting postoperative functional improvement in patients undergoing elective primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
The long-term goal of this project is to promote responsible opioid prescribing, immediately improving patient safety and ultimately decreasing healthcare costs by reducing older adult morbidity and mortality due to opioid-related injury. The objective of this pilot project is to gather data to inform the development of the STOP Injury tool and evaluate additional predictive factors and important outcomes relevant to prescription opioids.
The primary purpose of the proposed study is to validate our previously developed predictive model for adults with obstructive sleep apnea using (i) clinical data from multiple large academic centers, (ii) a longer follow-up period, and (iii) an extended definition of outcomes of interest. The TOH sleep database was created as a part of the project: "Validation of provincial health administrative data algorithms to identify patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): Feasibility project". Protocol ID: 20170591-01H (AMENDMENT APPROVED on December 19, 2018) to be used for future clinical, research, educational and quality improvement purposes.
It is estimated that 77% of all Americans own a smartphone and the use of health apps has doubled in the last two years. Consistent with this development, over half of US smartphone owners have downloaded a health-related mobile app. While patient engagement is an integral and well-established component of in-hospital Early Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs that drive improved perioperative outcomes, efforts to support such engagement are often limited to a patient's hospital stay. The objective of this aim is to empower patients to control their use of pain medications after surgery in a safe and effective fashion using a novel and innovative consumer health informatics app: UControlPain. This app will be leveraged to integrate three critical components of the study into one application: First, study recruitment and consent documentation. Second, application of the intervention engaging patients to take control of their pain management after discharge. Lastly, UControlPain will collect relevant patient outcomes including pain assessments, functional status, and quantification of opioid and non-opioid analgesic medication intake. Use of the app will reduce the amount of opioid medication required, while enhancing patient post-operative pain control by maximizing non-opioid therapy. Subjects will be able to employ flexible non-opioid therapy with acetaminophen and NSAIDs whenever possible and safe. The rationale is that testing of such a provider-prescribed consumer health informatics app (UControlPain) will lay the groundwork to scale this project towards more secure and efficient pain management practices after surgery on a systems level and beyond. Upon completion, the expectation is to have developed an effective consumer health informatics app to help patients better manage their post-surgical pain at home, reduce reliance on opioids, and improve opioid safety through enhanced storage and disposal behaviors.
Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is a non-invasive intervention to treat anxiety, depression, insomnia, and pain. But clinical studies and applications of CES in relation to acute postoperative pain are few. tThe investigators investigate a double-blind, randomized controlled trial to figure out if intraoperative CES could decrease dosage of intraoperative anesthetics and patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) consumption in patients undergoing colon cancer surgery.
Nationally, the opioid crisis has become a major epidemic with increasing mortality rates each year. Orthopedic surgeons routinely prescribe narcotics instead of NSAIDs for post-op pain control because of risk of delayed healing and nonunion due to NSAID use. Orthopedic oncology, however, has a unique subset of patients that undergo prophylactic placement of intramedullary femoral nails. Because no fracture is present, these patients do not rely on inflammatory healing factors, allowing for post-op NSAID use. This study sets out to determine the effect of post-op toradol use in addition to opioids compared to solely opioids in patients undergoing prophylactic nailing of the femur.
This study seeks to test standard and behavioral economic-enhanced training strategies to bolster first-time Emergency Department-initiated buprenorphine-naloxone administration among Emergency Department providers.
OPIOID FREE VERSUS OPIOID BALANCED ANAESTHESIA IN MIDDLE EAR SURGERY AIM OF THE WORK Primary aim: To compare between opioid and opioid free anaesthesia on post-operative nausea and vomiting in middle ear surgery Secondary aim: Monitoring analgesia, post-operative satisfaction and drowsiness.
The investigators aim to better understand opioid use in patients undergoing elective shoulder surgery. The investigators will prospectively determine actual postoperative opioid use, while evaluating whether implementation of an educational session with pain contract would help minimize opioid use.
