Filter by:Maintaining the population's fitness for work is a priority for the UK Government. People with poor health often struggle at work and take sick leave. Work brings financial, social and health benefits. Few employees receive support to manage their health at work, known as vocational advice, so when their health affects work they visit their general practitioner (GP). The investigators have recently shown the benefits of providing vocational advice for adults consulting in primary care with musculoskeletal pain. The WAVE study research question is: in patients consulting in general practice who receive a fit note for time off work, does a brief vocational advice intervention lead to fewer days lost from work than usual primary care, and is it cost-effective? WAVE includes a feasibility phase to adapt a vocational advice intervention for a broader group of patients and test it in a small sample of patients; followed by a pragmatic, multi-centre, two-arm, parallel-group randomised (1:1) trial with internal pilot phase, mixed methods process evaluation and health economic analysis. Patients will be randomised to either (i) vocational advice intervention plus usual care, or (ii) usual care alone. The vocational advice intervention is designed as a stepped care model based on the principles of case management and delivered by trained Vocational Support Workers (VSWs). The investigators will also interview patients, General Practitioners (GPs), VSWs and employers to understand their views about the intervention and return to work. Participants in the trial will be followed-up over 6 months with fortnightly text messages and postal questionnaires at 6 weeks and 6 months.
Musculoskeletal pain is common and often occurs already in adolescence. To be able to target future interventions that aim to prevent new episodes of MSK pain, more studies on modifiable risk factors are necessary. In this prospective cohort study, already collected data from the Fit Futures study will be used. The aim is to investigate if perceived social acceptance among peers in the first year of high school is associated with musculoskeletal pain in the last year of high school, and if this association is moderated by psychological distress.
Erosive hand osteoarthritis (EHOA) is a difficult-to-treat subtype of HOA characterized by local and systemic low-grade inflammation as well as by high level of pain and of disability. Auricular transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a promising therapeutic strategy that may reduce inflammation and pain level. ESTIVAL is a 12 weeks randomized sham-controlled trial investigating the symptomatic efficacy and safety of tVNS in patients with symptomatic and inflammatory EHOA. tVNS will be performed using a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) device connected to an auricular electrode stimulating the cutaneous area of the left ear innervated by the auricular ascendant branch of the vagus nerve. The active and sham device's will display similar appearance but the sham one will not give electric signal.
This feasibility study will evaluate yoga as a treatment for chronic pain in people living with Alzheimer's disease, and their Caregivers. The experimental treatment is yoga delivered via a tablet computer to participants at home ("teleyoga").
The goal of the study is to determine whether a brief, therapeutic interview can help patients improve their pain and health by addressing psychological issues that are known to drive chronic musculoskeletal pain. This randomized, controlled trial tests the efficacy of a brief, one-session therapeutic interview for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain and histories of childhood adversity. Adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain will be randomized to either a therapeutic interview condition or a waitlist control condition. The therapeutic interview will be 90-minute session during which participants will be encouraged to disclose stressful experiences, express important emotions, and identify connections between their life stress and their pain, which we hope will increase their psychological attributions for pain and reduce their pain, interpersonal problems, and psychological distress. The study will compare the therapeutic interview condition to a delayed interview condition and will follow patients for 6 weeks to identify changes in response to the interview. Participants in the therapeutic interview condition are expected to show more improvement on pain severity, pain interference, psychological distress, interpersonal function, and psychological attitudes toward pain at follow-up, relative to participants in the delayed interview condition.
The study will be described the development and implementation of the Clinical pathway (CPW) for acupuncture treatment in the management of patients with some chronic pain conditions. The effectiveness of this CPW will be explored in this study through retrospective analysis of clinical outcomes after administration of acupuncture treatment summarised in the guidelines.
Musculoskeletal injuries amongst surgeons are prevalent. This project will determine whether Robotic-assisted Laparoscopic surgery (RALS) offers superior benefits to surgeon's musculoskeletal health than standard laparoscopic surgery (LS), by identifying the comparative changes in muscle fatigue during RALS Vs LS surgical procedures, and additionally identify any cognitive effects of this. The Study if successful, could help reduce injury rates in surgeons.
Covid-19 outbreak and lockdown measures raised significant concerns over clinical management of chronic pain patients around the world. Patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMSP) are at high risk of physical disability, psychological distress, and poor quality of life. Analgesic medications were main management during lockdown, but opioid-related concerns have prompted to find immediate alternatives. Present study was undertaken to determine whether patients randomized to tele-yoga therapy would experience less pain, disability and improved global health, adherence and satisfaction, compared with patients assigned to usual care.
In 2017, Socialstyrelsen reported that mental ill-health in young adults had increased by almost 70% in the previous10 years. A 2014 report showed that 5% of men and 11% of women 18-24 years were diagnosed with depression or anxiety in Stockholm County. Furthermore, 41% of women 21-24 years have self reported psychological distress. Regarding pain, 28% of men and 36% of women 16-24 years have disabling neck pain. Little is known about the etiology and prognosis of poor mental health in university students. The aim is to advance knowledge about the etiology of depression, anxiety, stress and pain in undergraduate university students. The investigators will study a cohort of students at full-year programs at universities in the Stockholm area. Primary research questions are whether modifiable factors such as sleep quality, lifestyle, screen time and work environment are independent risk factors for incident episodes or unfavorable trajectories of depression, anxiety and pain in men and women? To be able to answer these research questions we designed a prospective cohort study targeting 5000 university students.
The aim of this pilot study is to conduct an unblinded pilot randomized clinical study on the effectiveness and tolerability of auricular semi-permanent (ASP) vs intradermal (long), and pyonex needles in Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) for the treatment of pain.
