Motor Unit Abnormalities After Experimentally Induced Sensitization

Central sensitization is a condition that represents a cascade of neurological adaptations, resulting in an amplification of nociceptive responses from noxious and non-noxious stimuli. This phenomenon presents itself in a vast majority of chronic pain syndromes. Previous evidence has shown that central sensitization results in afferent nociceptor and dorsal horn abnormalities; however, a link between whether this abnormality translates into motor output and more specifically, ventral horn abnormalities, needs to be further explored. Twenty participants were recruited and either a topical capsaicin or a placebo topical cream was applied to their back to induce a transient state of sensitization. Surface electromyography(sEMG) and intramuscular electromyography(iEMG) were used to record motor unit activity from the trapezius and infraspinatus muscles before and after application of capsaicin/placebo. Motor unit recruitment and variability were analyzed in the sEMG and iEMG respectively

BCI-assisted MI Intervention in Subacute Stroke

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability. Cost-effective post-stroke rehabilitation programs are critically needed. Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems which enable the modulation of EEG sensorimotor rhythms are promising tools to promote early improvements of motor rehabilitation outcomes after stroke. This project intends to boost this BCI application beyond the state of art by providing: i) evidence for a short/long-term efficacy in enhancing post-stroke functional hand motor recovery; and ii) quantifiable indices (beyond clinical scales) sensitive to stroke participant's response to a Promotoer (BCI system compatible with clinical setting) -based intervention. To these aims, a longitudinal randomized controlled trial will be performed in which, subacute stroke participants will undergo a Promotoer- assisted hand motor imagery training.

Using Telerehabilitation to Support Families of Children With Motor Difficulties Aged 3-8 Years Old

Background: Many children (about 1 child out of 20) have motor delays that are sometimes seen as "minor" and are not immediately explained by a specific diagnosis. These children are often underserved by existing health and rehabilitation services even though they are at risk of developing important negative outcomes in the long run. The most recent scientific evidence indicates that motor delays can be effectively addressed via early interventions supporting families and stimulating the child's development. Some researchers have proposed that such interventions could be efficiently and conveniently delivered online but no patient-centred, interactive online intervention has been formally trialed in Canada for children with motor delay and their families. Objectives: The goal of this study is to determine whether an online intervention can support families of children with motor delay. This study will determine whether the online intervention can improve the child's motor skills and parental self-efficacy, decrease parental stress, as well as increase the quality of life of both the parent and child. Description: The investigators will recruit 118 families of children with motor delay, 3 to 8 years of age, who are not yet receiving public rehabilitation services. These children will have been identified as at-risk of motor difficulties by their parents who will have completed a self-reported screening test for motor difficulties. Families will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: 1) control group (usual care) or 2) intervention group (access to the WECARE web platform, including one-on-one virtual meetings with health professionals, group and private discussions, verified resources). This study, conducted in Quebec, will be led by researchers, telerehabilitation experts, decision makers and patient advocates. Relevance: This study will evaluate an innovative, convenient and accessible intervention providing assistance for an important yet underserved population of children and their families.

Explorer Babies Early Intervention Program

Premature babies have a high risk of adverse developmental outcomes. Early intervention approaches are applied to reduce these adverse outcomes or support of developmental delay. Early intervention approaches may vary depending on developmental priorities. While some early intervention methods can consider body structured findings such as posture, tonus, muscle power, others may consider coaching family, enrichment of the environment. The explorer baby program is developed based on the trial and error process. The program tries to find an answer to a unique question: "how trial behavior in infants can be increased and which behaviors of the infants should be supported to increase their trial process?" The Explorer baby program tries to increase exploratory motor behaviors to facilitate development. For this aim, the program tries to explain how a baby learns new skills such as rolling, sitting, babbling, playing peek a boo, etc. in all domains of development while the baby lives in their natural environment. This study aims to investigate the effect of the explorer baby early intervention program.

Impact of Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Per-oral Endoscopic Myotomy for Esophageal Motor Disorders

No recommendation regarding antibiotic prophylaxis and preparation modalities are available for patients with esophageal motor disorders who benefit from Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM). The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of antibiotic prophylaxis on the POEM's safety. This study was a comparative and multicentric retrospective analysis of a database prospectively maintained. Patients over 18 year's old with esophageal motor disorders confirmed by prior manometry, who underwent POEM were included. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of complications, as classified by Cotton, based on whether or not antibiotic prophylaxis was administered.

The Türkish Version of the Freezing of Gait Questionnaire

The freezing of gait (FOG) is one of the disabling symptoms in Parkinson's disease. The diagnosis and assessment of the FOG may be diffucult, but it is absolutely necessary. The aim of this study was to develop a Türkish version of the freezing of gait questionnaire (FOG-Q) and assess the validity and reliability of this Türkish version. The researchers firstly communicated with the developers of the FOG-Q. The permission for Turkish version was received by Giladi. Then, the FOG-Q will be adapted into Türkish using forward-backward translation by three native Türkish-speaking forward translators and one native English-speaking backward translator. The internal reliability of the FOG-Q Türkish version will be assessed using Cronbach's alpha, and item analyses will be conducted by examining the effect on Cronbach's alpha of excluding each of the six FOG-Q items individually. The test-retest reliability will be assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Convergent validity will be evaluated by means of Spearman rank correlation coefficient (rs). In this section will be determined the correlation between the FOG-Q scores and scores of the UPDRS motor section , Berg Balance Scale, Timed up and go test, Falls Efficacy Scale and Hoehn and Yahr stages.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) or transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used for the modulation of stroke patients' motor function by altering the cortical excitability. Recently, more challenging approaches, such as stimulation of two or more sites or use of dual modality have been studied in stroke patients. In this study, simultaneous stimulation using both rTMS and tDCS (dual-mode stimulation) over bilateral primary motor cortices (M1s) was investigated to compare its modulatory effects with single rTMS stimulation in subacute stroke patients.

Immersive Virtual Reality for Stroke Motor Rehabilitation

The present study aims at investigating (i) the feasibility in chronic stroke of using a dedicated virtual reality (VR) based system that embeds real-time 3D motion capture and embodied visual feedback to deliver functional exercises designed for training of impaired upper limb motor skills, (ii) whether chronic stroke survivors improve in functional outcomes in the upper limb when exposed to intensive VR-based therapy, and (iii) safety and tolerance to such a technology. The investigators hypothesize that intensive VR-based rehabilitation may lead to high rehabilitation doses and functional improvement in chronic stroke.
