Horticultural therapy (HT) "is the engagement of a client in horticulture activities facilitated by a trained therapist to achieve specific and documented treatment goals" (American Horticultural Therapy Association, 2012). People's interactions with plants, through goal-orientated horticultural activities in the form of active gardening, as well as the passive appreciation of nature, could be therapeutic to people with mental or intellectual disabilities in many ways (Eling, 2006; Parkinson, Lowe, & Vecsey, 2011). This study aims to conduct evaluation studies of HT group programmes for care home residents with severe mental illness.

Mindful Attention Training Workshop for Firefighters

The overarching goal of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy, feasibility, and acceptability of Mindful Attention Training (MAT), a novel mindfulness-based intervention that is specifically developed for firefighters. This project is designed to improve the health of firefighters, an integral, essential component of our national and international communities. Moreover, the study aims to promote health service psychologists by enhancing our contributions to the mental healthcare of firefighters, an understudied and underserved segment of the population by virtue of their service to our communities. This study therefore has significant potential to identify, develop, and promote an effective model of quality, evidence-based mental health promotion and illness prevention by integrating health service psychology into the fire service.

Identification and Clinical Relevance of an Oxytocin Deficient State (CRH Study)

Oxytocin (OT) is a hypothalamic peptide that enters the peripheral circulation via the posterior pituitary gland. OT plays a key role in regulating appetite, psychopathology, prosocial behavior and sexual function. Hypopituitarism is associated with increased obesity, increased psychopathology, sexual and prosocial dysfunction despite appropriate hormone replacement. A few studies suggest the existence of a possible OT deficient state in hypopituitarism. In animal models, corticorelin hormone (CRH) has shown to increase OT release. This study is designed to evaluate oxytocin values after administration of CRH in adults (healthy volunteers and patients with hypopituitarism). The investigators hypothesize that OT response will be blunted following CRH in patients with hypopituitarism compared to healthy controls.

Feasibility of Mobile and Technology Assisted Aftercare Services for Crisis Stabilization Units

In this study investigators are examining the feasibility and acceptability of an expanded and technology-assisted aftercare program with persons released from a crisis stabilization unit (CSU) who were brought to the CSU by choice of law enforcement. Investigators are assessing the critical elements of CSUs, examining the feasibility and acceptability of pairing mobile and technology-assisted aftercare to improve treatment access and retention; and developing a study protocol to be used in a future multisite randomized controlled trial (RCT). Crisis stabilization units provide law enforcement officers an alternative to jail for individuals experiencing a substance use or mental health disorder crisis contributing to criminalized behavior. This study is designed to assist with the diversion of individuals toward treatment and away from subsequent contact with law enforcement through piloting mobile and technology assisted aftercare services to persons released from a CSU. One of the largest barriers to the effectiveness of CSUs is retaining the individual in treatment after discharge. Logistical factors including transportation, stable housing, and long waitlists for community-based treatment decrease treatment access. These factors may also be complicated by an individual's understanding of the importance of remaining in treatment as well as their motivation to continue. To overcome these barriers and enhance the impact of CSUs, investigators are developing an expanded model which includes mobile and technology-assisted modalities that address psychological, behavioral, and medication-assisted treatment.

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effect of diabetes training on HbA1c, levels of depression and quality of life of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus adolescents by using the Web-Based Watson Human Care Model. Methods: The study was conducted with 30 adolescents between 11-18 years old who was followed by Child Endocrinology Department and who accepted to participate in the research. A web page was developed by considering Training Guide for Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes and processes of Watson Human Care Theory. Live video interviews were done with adolescents in the experiment group on 14 sessions and these interviews were recorded.

Prevalence of Traumatic Events and PTSD in Immigrant and Non-immigrant Patients With Psychotic Disorder

Higher rates of psychosis are described in migrant population. Likewise, this populations could suffer several adversities during migration process that could lead to higher exposure to traumatic events and higher rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There is a growing evidence that trauma is associated with psychosis onset. The aim of this research is to study the association between psychosis and traumatic events exposure/PTSD in immigrant population. Our hypothesis is that the higher incidence of psychosis described in immigrant population is associated to higher trauma exposure. A case-control observational study is performed. Patients who presented at least one psychotic episode are recruited from acute and chronic units at "Parc Salut Mar" (Barcelona). Estimated total sample is 196 individuals. Trauma exposure is assessed by validated trauma scales. Known factors associated with psychosis are controled during the statistic analysis.

Improving Safety and Quality in Mental Healthcare

Background: Patient safety incidents are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. So far, existing safety improvement work has largely focused on physical healthcare. Only a small body of research has studied safety as it applies to mental healthcare, with these studies concentrating primarily on psychiatric inpatient units. However, mental healthcare is increasingly delivered in community settings, through primary care and secondary care mental health provision, rather than in hospitals. Less is known about the safety problems service users experience in community-based mental healthcare. It is important that safety problems in community-based mental health services are better understood, so that care can be improved. Objective: This research will aim to understand the nature of the safety problems experienced by adult users of community-based mental healthcare, from the perspective of service users, carers, and healthcare providers. The study will also aim to identify priority areas and effective practices to improve safety in these settings. Method: Individual in-depth interviews or focus groups will be held with service users, carers, and frontline healthcare providers employed within appropriate community-based mental healthcare settings. Interviews or focus groups will last for approximately one hour and will be carried out face-to-face or via secure videoconferencing technology (e.g. Microsoft Teams or Zoom), depending on up-to-date guidance relating to the Covid-19 pandemic. With participant consent, interviews and focus groups will be audio-recorded and transcribed. Transcripts will be analysed using thematic analysis, with themes developed, defined, and revised throughout the analysis process. Discussion: Study findings will help to fill key evidence gaps concerning safety in community-based mental healthcare. More broadly, the results may lead to the development of evidence-informed interventions to address the safety issues which are raised in participant discussions.

Targeting Individual Alpha Frequencies to Enhance Perceptual Timing

This is a single-blind randomized within-subject crossover design study that will be conducted in 2 phases. In Phase 1, up to 50 participants, after signing informed consent and determining eligibility, will undergo a baseline EEG and cognitive assessment. In Phase 2 participants will undergo tACS at IAF+2Hz, IAF-2Hz, and IAF during a double-flash illusion task in a randomized order. The tACS will be applied with a current of 1-2 mA (milliamperes) via two saline soaked electrode sponges (25 cm²) applied to the back of the head. The investigator's hypothesis is that participant's will perform better on the visual task while tACS is set to 2 Hz above their IAPF, relative to tACS set to 2 Hz below their IAPF.
