Precise and Objective Identification of Bertolotti Syndrome Using Novel Kinematic Biomarkers

The purpose of this study is to collect lumbar rotations, velocity, and accelerations, along with pain scores using a novel dynamic VAS device, from twenty (20) Bertolotti Syndrome patients and twenty (20) non-Bertolotti low back pain patients during range-of-motion tasks. The assessments will be analyzed to determine the differences in kinematics and continuous pain scores between Bertolotti patients and non-Bertolotti low back pain patients.

Efficacy and Tolerability of AP707 in Patients With Chronic Back Pain

Over the last years a rising medical need for treatment of chronic pain was identified. Based on previous findings indicating the pain modulating effects of cannabinoids in chronic pain disorders, this clinical trial investigates the efficacy and tolerability of the THC-focused nano endocannabinoid system modulator AP707 in patients with chronic back pain disorders. Patients receive AP707 or placebo over the course of 14 weeks as an add-on to the standard of care. Changes in pain intensity, quality of life and sleep and others measures are monitored through different scales to assess the efficacy of AP707 in patients with chronic back pain.

Visualizing ACNES and LUCNES With DIRT

Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (ACNES) is caused by nerve entrapment in the abdominal wall. Recently de Weerd and Weum have suggested lumbar cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (LUCNES) as a name for a similar condition in the lower back. DIRT can potentially be used to identify the locations of perforators, thereby also indirectly identifying the location of nerve entrapment in ACNES and LUCNES, when a point of maximal pain corresponds to a hot spot. This study evaluates the location of hot spots on DIRT in relation to tender points and perforators visualized with CT angiography and color Doppler. In the ACNES patients, DIRT performed with a low-cost smartphone thermal camera will be compared to DIRT with a professional thermal camera to evaluate the usefulness of low-cost equipment to visualize the point of nerve entrapment.

Effectiveness of an Electronic Decision Support System (DeSSBack) in Improving the Management of Low Back Pain

Low back pain is a common health problem where over than half a billion people worldwide suffers from it. In Malaysia, back pain is among the top ten reasons why people see a doctor. Although there are many guidelines available, healthcare professionals still find managing low back pain as challenging. The Decision Support System for Low Back Pain (DeSSBack) has been developed by adopting and re-packaging STaRT system, incorporate with the local clinical practice guidelines and feedback from local experts. It aims to aid healthcare professionals in managing low back pain through a stratified approach. The objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of DeSSBack in improving the management of patients with low back pain in a primary care clinic. We hypothesise that the implementation of DeSSBack will improve the outcomes of low back pain patients including quality of life, emotional state and level of pain. This study protocol presents the rationale and design of a cluster randomized controlled trial.
