Filter by:Sleep disturbance in cancer patients is often overlooked despite its documented high prevalence and negative impact. There are few empirically validated non-pharmacological treatments for insomnia and many patients are unwilling to rely on sleeping medications. This study will determine whether Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (a program that teaches meditation and yoga) produces equivalent results with the additional benefits of reduced stress and mood disturbance, to an already established treatment for insomnia, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. This will allow for the expansion of treatment options for insomnia beyond what is currently available and improve quality of life for millions of cancer survivors.
The purpose of this study is to test the efficacy of a brief behavioral insomnia intervention in reducing headache frequency and severity among patients with chronic migraine and insomnia. It is hypothesized that this intervention will produce greater changes in headache frequency and severity than will a comparison treatment involving non-sleep-specific general lifestyle modifications.
Many combat Veterans suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an anxiety disorder that develops after an extremely stressful event or events. PTSD is associated with problems falling asleep or staying asleep. Veterans with PTSD also commonly have nightmares from stressful experiences. These symptoms can cause problems in daily life. Behavioral treatments that do not involve taking medication have been shown to help improve problems related to sleep and nightmares. However, very few of these treatments address both sleep problems and nightmares at the same time, even though many people suffer from both problems. The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a combined treatment for sleep problems and nightmares in Veterans suffering from combat-related PTSD that is presented in a group format. The investigators hypothesize that the completion of this treatment will lead to increases in sleep quality and decreases in the frequency and severity of nightmares as measured by standard questionnaires.
This is a study to evaluate next-day residual effects of MK-4305 on highway driving performance in healthy, non-elderly participants.
This study will evaluate the safety, tolerability, and effect of multiple doses of suvorexant (MK-4305) on respiratory function in participants with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This is a crossover study, so all participants will receive both suvorexant and placebo while on study. The primary hypothesis of this study is that multiple doses of suvorexant do not produce a clinically significant reduction of mean oxygen saturation (SaO2) during total sleep time in participants with COPD, as compared to placebo.
This is a pilot research study examining two types of behavioral counseling along with the nicotine patch for smoking cessation. The study is designed to find out whether one of these counseling interventions is more effective for smoking cessation among individuals with sleep problems. The study has three parts: 1) an intake session; 2) a 10-week treatment phase, and 3) a 1-month follow-up.
This is a multi center, double blind placebo controlled, two-way crossover study in patients with Insomnia suffering from difficulty in falling asleep and staying asleep. This study intends to assess the efficacy of Zaleplon AP in improving sleep parameters, comparing to placebo.
The Veterans Millennium Health Care and Benefits Act (Millennium Act) of 1999 mandated the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide non-institutional long-term care to veterans. Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) is a key component of that spectrum of long-term care services. Veterans in ADHC commonly suffer from limited poor functioning, depression, cognitive problems and low quality of life. These factors can lead to continued deterioration in functioning, loss of independence, hospitalizations, nursing home placement and death. Sleep disruption is associated with depression, low quality of life, functional decline, nursing home placement, and death among older people. Sleep disturbance is common among ADHC patients, it is not addressed within routine clinical care, and treatment may be limited to medications. Studies show that untreated insomnia and medications for insomnia can increase risk of falls and other health events among older persons. On the other hand, non-medication treatments for sleep do not show these problems. These treatments have been shown to be effective in other studies. The goal of this study is to test non-medication treatments to improve sleep among older Veterans with insomnia in a VA ADHC program. The study design will facilitate translation into routine care and application in other similar VA programs.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of hepatic dysfunction on the pharmacokinetics and safety of LY2624803 and its major metabolite, LSN2797276.
This study includes two sub-trials. In trial 1 patients suffering from insomnia but not meeting the criteria for depression are randomised to either therapist guided Internet-based CBT for insomnia or to a control group with a non-guided, brief self-help program that acts as a placebo control. The primary purpose is to evaluate reduction in Insomnia severity (compared to placebo) after treatment and at follow-ups at 6-month, 1 year and 3 years. Secondary purpose is to evaluate the costeffectiveness of the treatment and to evaluate if the insomnia treatment has a preventive effect on future depressive episodes. Recruitment is done through mass media and includes all regions of Sweden. Initial assessment based on questionnaires and telephone interviews. Trial 2 includes patients suffering from both Insomnia and depression. Randomization is done between either CBT for insomnia or CBT for depression (both Internet-based) to evaluate each respective treatment's effect on both insomnia and depression. The patients need for further treatment after the initial one will be measured and used as a secondary outcome. Recruitment is done through mass media but only citizens in the Stockholm area are included since the initial assessment are based on both questionnaires and telephone interviews as well as a visit at a psychiatrist located at the Internet psychiatry clinic in Stockholm. Both trials will include health economic data and analysis. For the longer follow-up periods (1 and 3 years), registers will be used to analyse consumption of sleep medication and antidepressants as well as general health care utilization.
