Effects of Dietary Fiber on Insulin Sensitivity

This study will examine the effects of a dietary fiber on insulin sensitivity in overweight and obese women. The fiber will be added to snack foods and women will consume the foods for four weeks. In one four-week period, 15 g of fiber will be added, and 30 g will added in another period. In a third period, no fiber will be added to the snack foods. Insulin senstivity will be measured at the end of each treatment period.

Immediate food allergy is , sometimes , a life threatening situation . Diagnosis is done by skin prick test with commercial extracts. Nevertheless, some of the extracts are not optimal and reproduce false negative results (no allergy) in patients with history highly suggestive of allergic reaction. The aim of this study is to compare the reproducibility of different commercial extracts and raw food in patients with convincing history of acute allergic symptoms related to food .

Nut Allergy Study: Double-blind Challenge and Oral Desensitization

Nut sensitization in skin prick tests is common in areas, including Finland, where birch pollen is abundant. However, sensitization to nuts in skin prick test does not predict the possibility of allergic symptoms when nuts are ingested. In this study the investigators launch and perform double-blind placebo-controlled nut challenges and oral desensitization/ protocol to those with serious symptoms in the challenge. The efficacy and safety of the new oral desensitization program is the primary outcome. The effect of oral desensitization on bronchial hyperreactivity, eosinophilic airway inflammation, and quality of life are secondary outcomes.

Study to Evaluate the Potential of Air Structuring Protein to Elicit Allergic Reactions in Mold Sensitized People

Air Structuring Protein (ASP) is a small protein derived from a fungus which is already widely used to produce enzymes that are added to foods. ASP has the possibility of stabilising the air phase of ice-cream and therefore there is interest in ASP as a potential ice-cream ingredient. Toxicological tests have also been carried out to further confirm the safety of the material and no evidence of genotoxicity or acute toxicity has been observed in any of the tests. As part of the safety evaluation of a new protein for use in foods, the potential allergenicity is also investigated and Unilever is sponsoring a study to evaluate this aspect of ASP. This study will investigate: - Whether ASP has the potential to elicit a positive skin prick test (SPT) in a population of participants with proven sensitivity to mould. - Whether ASP is responsible for any positive SPT reactions, should they occur. - And if any positive SPT reactions to ASP occur, whether such reactions are clinically relevant with respect to food allergy. The study is divided in three stages. In Stage 1 and Stage 2, the SPT is "open label," which means that both the participant and the study doctor will know which materials are being tested. In Stage 3, the food challenge has a "crossover" design, meaning that participants will take one of the products (ASP or placebo [food containing no ASP]) during the first half of the study and the other treatment during the second half. The order of ASP and placebo will be decided randomly, like tossing a coin. To make the comparison between ASP and placebo as fair as possible, the food challenge is "double blinded." This means that neither the participant nor the study doctor will know which kind of products (ASP or placebo) the participant is taking. This is a multi centre study which is taking place in the UK.

For patients with Immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food allergy, the current management includes identification of the causative food and avoidance. Egg allergy is among the most common causes of IgE-mediated food allergy in children, affecting approximately 1.6% of children (its prevalence is higher in children with atopic dermatitis or other food allergies). Given the prevalence of egg and the difficulty to avoid it in the diet, we aim to investigate the safety and efficacy of baked egg oral immunotherapy.

Grass pollen and house dust mites (HDM) are the most common allergens causing allergic rhino-conjunctivitis (RC) and/or asthma (A). Subcutaneous allergen specific immunotherapy (SCIT) reduces symptoms and use of medication. The purpose of SABAL is to assess the effect of SCIT on disease severity classifications in terms of number of days affected- and sick days on patients with grass pollen and/or HDM induced disease. Aqualase Versus Torsional ip. A Study on Endothelial Cells, Corneal Edema and Corneal Sensitivity

Objective of this study is the comparative assessment of the impact of torsional and liquefaction technologies on endothelial cells (ECC), corneal edema (CCT) and corneal sensitivity (CCS) in a sample of cataract patients. Participants were recruited from the Cataract Service of the UHA in a consecutive-if-eligible basis. Eligibility criteria included diagnosis of senile cataract with stage 2 nuclear opalescence according to the Lens Opacities Classification System III (LOCS-3) grading scale [10]. By means of a custom computer randomization program all participants randomly populated two study groups according to the cataract-extraction technology used: a) Torsional group (TG) and b) Liquefaction group (LG).
