Filter by:The purpose of this study is to test the safety and feasibility of placing and removing a small device that contains anti-cancer drugs in a breast tumor of patients who plan on having breast surgery without treatment prior or patients who plan on receiving standard preoperative chemotherapy prior to their breast surgery. This device may be able to predict what types of treatment work best against an individual's breast cancer. With this device, the investigators hope to be able to personalize treatment choices based on an individual's type of breast cancer.
This study will determine the effects toothbrush type (power or manual) has on the safety and effectiveness of professional dentinal hypersensitivity treatment with a marketed oxalate-containing solution.
Biological Standardization of Cupressus arizonica Allergen Extract.
Allergic patients especially those undergoing de-sensitization treatment have an altered immune responsiveness. The investigators aim to find out whether this influences immune responses to primary and booster vaccinations.
Background: - About 15 million Americans have a food allergy. Because there are no cures or effective prevention or treatment for food allergies, researchers want to learn more about them. Objective: - To learn more about the causes and effects of food allergy and related conditions. Eligibility: - People ages 2 99 who have food allergy and/or a related genetic or other condition - Their relatives - Healthy relatives and volunteers Design: - Participants will have at least 3 visits over 1 2 years, and then once a year for up to 12 years. Each may last a day or longer. - Participants will be screened with medical history, physical exam, and questionnaires. - Participants may have the following: - Blood tests - Allergy skin prick tests: Drops of allergens are placed on the back or arm. The skin is scratched under each drop. - Leukapheresis: blood is taken from a needle in one arm, passed through a machine, and returned through a needle in the other arm. - X-rays - Esophageal string test: One end of a string is taped to the cheek and the other end is packed into a capsule. When the capsule is swallowed, the string unwinds; it is left in for at least 1 hour. - EGD and colonoscopy: Biopsies are taken from the gastrointestinal system. - Tiny biopsies of skin - Photographs of the body - Collection of cells through: - Swab of nose, inside of cheek, or skin - Gentle skin scrape - Tape stripping: piece of tape is put on the skin and pulled off.
The investigators wish to evaluate the association between tryptase values as well as c-Kit mutation and adverse effects in the course of immunotherapy. The investigators also intend to assess the effect of immunotherapy on tryptase levels.
The purpose of this study is to determine if avoidance of peanut by children with positive allergy testing to peanut in the first 5 years of life increases the likelihood of developing a persistent peanut allergy by age 5 years. To answer this question, the investigators need to determine which children with positive allergy testing to peanut have reactions after eating peanut (allergic to peanut) and which are able to tolerate eating peanut (not allergic). The investigators plan to conduct double-blind placebo-controlled peanut challenges (gold standard for peanut allergy diagnosis) for CHILD study (http://www.canadianchildstudy.ca) participants who had positive skin prick testing to peanut at ages 1, 3 or 5 years (in other words, children who are sensitized to peanut, but may or may not be allergic to peanut) and who are avoiding peanut without ever having had a reaction or whose history suggests that they may have outgrown a known peanut allergy. These challenges will not change a child's ability to tolerate peanut, but will determine if children who are avoiding peanut are allergic to peanut (and need to continue avoiding peanut) or clinically tolerant to peanut (and may continue to eat peanut after passing the challenge).
Despite its common occurrence, still little is known about pathomechanisms determining different wheeze and asthma trajectories and phenotypes in children, and those beginning in adulthood. Therefore, deciphering underlying determinants for different childhood and adult asthma phenotypes is urgently needed to develop personalized treatment approaches targeting distinct underlying mechanisms. Thereby, secondary prevention early in the disease process can also be achieved. The decoding of such mechanisms and their translation to the individual patient is the aim of the Disease Area Asthma Allergy of the 'German Centre for Lung Research' (DZL).
The Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP), is an inflammatory disease who has an evolution to develop progressive interstitial fibrosis, who cause the death of the patient. Actually HP has been treated with Prednisone and occasionally with Azathioprine, but unfortunately the treatment with these drugs have not an effective result to treat the interstitial fibrosis. Pirfenidone has been studied over the world for the treatment of Fibrotic diseases, with positive results, and due to the Pirfenidone mechanism of action has anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties, the investigators propose to evaluate the addition of Pirfenidone to the actual treatment with Prednisone and Azathioprine in the treatment of patients with Pulmonary Fibrosis secondary to a Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis.
Recently, there has been an increasing interest in using traditional Chinese medicine for food allergy. The Harvard group has successfully demonstrated the Food Allergy Herbal Formula - FAHF2 completely blocked peanut-induced anaphylaxis in a murine model, and currently being studied in human. Therefore, in collaboration with the Institute of Chinese Medicine, CUHK, the investigators have developed a more simplified Chinese herbal formula - X (CHFX), containing four food-grade Chinese herbs, Wu-mei (Fructus Pruni Mume); Ling-zhi (Gonoderma); Huang-bai (Cortex Phellodendron) and Zhi-su (Perilla frutescens). In the present study, the investigators would like to examine whether there is reduction in allergic symptoms in food challenge after administering the CHFX for 8 weeks. There will be pre- and post- CHFX food challenges and other related tests.
