The purpose of this trial is to find out if a special website might help people discover if they have high cholesterol and then enable them to manage their cholesterol more appropriately. The primary aim of this trial is to determine the effects on consumers' use of cholesterol lowering therapy of an online service that provides automated, individually tailored, advice about eligibility for cholesterol lowering treatment. The primary null hypothesis being tested is that the service will result in no change in the use of cholesterol lowering treatments by consumers that use the service. The secondary aim of the trial is to see if it is possible to improve the cholesterol management of the friends or relatives of consumers that use the I-CAT service. The corresponding secondary null hypothesis being tested is that the I-CAT service will result in no change in the use of cholesterol lowering treatments by the friends or relatives of the consumers that use the service.
Background- Statins are a safe and effective therapy to reduce cardiovascular risk in patients with type 2 diabetes; however some patients are not prescribed statins, others do not take it even after being prescribed, and others stop therapy prematurely. Lack of knowledge or misinformation about statins may be responsible for inadequate statin use. Objective- To test the hypothesis that a formal, structured decision aid could correct deficiencies in the current decision-making process, increase statin use, and improve outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods - The investigators will develop a decision aid called STATIN CHOICE and will pilot its efficacy in a blinded randomized controlled trial enrolling 98 type 2 diabetes patients. Outcomes- Primary outcomes: adherence to the decision to use or not to use statins three months after using STATIN CHOICE. Secondary outcomes: acceptability of STATIN CHOICE, knowledge about options, satisfaction with decisions, decisional conflict, encounter duration, and quality of life. Expected results- The investigators anticipate that this work will yield an effective and innovative decision aid for statin use in type 2 diabetes patients. STATIN CHOICE, along with a detailed users manual, will be directly applicable in clinical practice. Data and experience from this project will inform the planning and conduct of a randomized multicenter trial of the effectiveness of STATIN CHOICE in diverse practice settings. Significance- Patient participation in decision-making resulting in informed treatment decisions, as proposed in this study, will likely lead to improved quality of decision-making, more appropriate use of statins, and improved patient outcomes.
The aim of this study is to assess the safety and tolerability of varying dose and load regimens of ISIS 301012 in people who have elevated LDL-cholesterol levels.
The objective of this research is to understand how Crestor can effectively reduce the levels of the bad cholesterol, LDL, in blood. It is hypothesized that with a low dose, Crestor will facilitate the rate of removal of LDL from the blood. At the higher dose, the increased potency of Crestor is explained by a reduction in the production of LDL by the liver.
To evaluate the primary preventive effect of low-dose pravastatin against coronary heart disease (CHD) in Japanese hypercholesterolemic patients.
To compare LDL reduction compared to baseline in patients using maximum tolerated HMG CoA Reductase inhibitor (statin) therapy with adjunctive therapy with ezetimibe, colestipol, or niacin. The patient's cardiovascular risks are assessed to determine if National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) guidelines for low density lipoprotein (LDL) reduction were achieved between the three groups. Secondary measures examine the safety issues with liver function test (LFT) monitoring and rhabdomyolysis. High-density lipoproteins (HDL) elevations are monitored between the three groups to determine efficacy as a secondary outcome.
This is a multicenter, randomized, parallel group, placebo controlled study designed to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of ezetimibe added to ongoing atorvastatin therapy compared with ongoing atorvastatin treatment alone. This study will involve subjects with primary hypercholesterolemia and coronary heart disease (CHD) who are currently being treated with atorvastatin and who would benefit from additional reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).
This is a randomized, active-control, double-blind study of subjects with stabilized high-risk acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The primary objective is to evaluate the clinical benefit of Ezetimibe/Simvastatin Combination 10/40 (single tablet, under the brand VYTORIN in the United States) compared with Simvastatin 40 mg. As per the original protocol, if low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) response was inadequate, the dose of simvastatin in the VYTORIN arm or simvastatin arm, could be increased to 80 mg (Note: per June 2011 protocol amendment, criteria for continued use of 80 mg simvastatin were modified and new increases of simvastatin dose to 80 mg were stopped). Clinical benefit will be defined as the reduction in the risk of the occurrence of the composite endpoint of cardiovascular (CV) death, major coronary events, and stroke.
