Filter by:The purpose of this study is to pilot test a behavioral medication adherence (MA) intervention compared to control condition in older adults with low adherence to medication for hypercholesterolemia.
A group of ~ 225 patients were switched from atorvastatin to an equivalent statin either by their physicians usual management or by an collaborative pharmacist coordinated process. We will compare the results of pharmacist process to the standard medical practice to find potentially which process is more effective, safer and efficient. We are surveying a total of 35 physicians, 12 using the pharmacist coordinated process and 23 not, comparing their satisfaction of the 2 processes.
The purpose of the study is to establish the proportion of patients on lipid-lowering pharmacological treatment reaching the LDL-C goals according to the All-Russian Scientific Cardiology Society guidelines/ the 4th Joint European Task Force guidelines.
Background: - Atherosclerosis (thickening of the artery walls caused by cholesterol and other deposits) commonly occurs in the heart vessels and carotid (neck) arteries of adults. This is often present in individuals with high cholesterol levels in their blood. These patients are usually treated with cholesterol lowering medication ( statins ) along with modification of diet and exercise. Researchers are interested in investigating new approaches including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) imaging studies to detect blood vessel blockages that would not otherwise be detected by cholesterol levels and risk factors for heart disease. Objectives: - To measure atherosclerosis in the heart vessels and carotid arteries using imaging tests (computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)) before and after standard treatment with cholesterol lowering medication ( statins ) Eligibility: - Healthy individuals at least 55 years of age who are candidates for therapy to lower their blood cholesterol levels. Design: - This study will involve one screening visit and seven study visits over a period of 2 years. - Participants will be screened with a physical examination and medical history, as well as blood samples and tests to ensure that it is safe for them to have CT and MRI scans. Participants will provide information on current medications, dietary habits, smoking status, alcohol and caffeine intake, and their level of physical activity. - Participants will be divided into two groups. One group will receive standard doses of medication to lower cholesterol according to current treatment guidelines, while the other group will have MRI scans of the carotid arteries and a CT scan of the heart to determine the best medication dose levels. - Visits 3 to 5 will be scheduled 3, 6, and 9 months after visit 2. During these visits, researchers will monitor for possible side effects and may change or adjust medications and doses. - At visit 6, participants will have an MRI scan of the carotid arteries, a physical examination, and blood tests. Medications may be changed or adjusted. - At visit 7, participants will have blood tests, and medications may be changed or adjusted. - At the final visit, participants will have MRI and CT scans of the carotid arteries and heart, respectively, as well as a final physical examination and blood tests.
This study is aimed to collect the following Serbia-specific epidemiology data on hypercholesterolemia: patents characteristics, patients' management/treatment and physicians' standard practice. In addition, the aim is to determine the proportion of patients on lipid-lowering pharmacological treatment who have reached the LDL-C and HDL-C treatment goals.
The primary objective is to investigate the safety of Caduet (2.5 mg/5 mg, 2.5 mg/10 mg, 5 mg/5 mg or 5 mg/10 mg as dose of Amlodipine/Atorvastatin) during 52 weeks treatment period in Japanese patients with both of hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, or with both angina pectoris and hypercholesterolemia.
General practitioners (GPs) and patients find it difficult to talk about risk of future disease, especially when patients have asymptomatic conditions, and treatment options are unlikely to cause immediate perceptible improvements in well-being. Further studies in risk communication for disease prevention are needed, as are studies about risk communication training for GPs. Aim: 1) to systematically develop, describe and evaluate a complex intervention comprising a training programme for GPs in risk communication and shared decision-making, 2) to evaluate the effect of the training programme on real-life consultations between GPs and patients with high cholesterol levels, and 3) to evaluate patients' reactions during and after the consultations. Hypothesis: 1) patients have better adherence to chosen treatment. The effect of the complex intervention, based around a training programme, will be evaluated in a cluster-randomised controlled trial with an intervention group and an active control group with 40 GPs and 280 patients in each group. The GPs receive a questionnaire at baseline and after 6 months about their attitudes towards risk communication and cholesterol-reducing medication. After each consultation with a participating high cholesterol-patient, the GPs will complete a questionnaire about decision satisfaction. The patients will receive a questionnaire at baseline and after 3 and 6 months. It includes questions about adherence to chosen treatment, self-rated health, patient enablement, and risk communication and decision-making effectiveness. Prescriptions, contacts to the health services, and cholesterol level will be drawn from the register of the National Health Service of Denmark at baseline and at 6 months. In both intervention group and active control group, 12 consultations will be observed and tape-recorded. The consultations will be divided between 4 GPs with each 3 patients. The patients from these 24 consultations will be interviewed immediately after the consultation and re-interviewed after 6 months.Eight purposefully selected GPs from the intervention group will be interviewed in a focus group 6 months after participation in the training programme. The process and context of the RISAP-study will be investigated in detail using an action research approach, in order to describe and analyse research choices, adaptation of intervention model to the specific context, and GPs' and patients' reactions to trial participation.
Background: Several studies have reported limited or no reduction in serum lipid concentrations in response to probiotic formulations. More recently, probiotics have shown promise in treating metabolic disease, due to improved strain selection and delivery technologies. Objective: To evaluate the lipid lowering efficacy of a yogurt formulation containing microencapsulated Bile Salt Hydrolase (BSH)-active Lactobacillus reuteri cardioviva, taken twice per day over 6 weeks, in subjects with hypercholesterolemia. Design: This is a double-blinded, multi-centric, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel-arm study. The study will last a total of 10 weeks including 2-week wash-out, 2-week run-in, and 6- week treatment period.
Statin is an effective drug to treat hyperlipidemia (hypercholesterolemia), and it rarely leads to hepatic damage to the patients with hepatic disorder. For these patients, intensive monitoring is required.
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of a single dose of PF-04950615 (RN316) in volunteers on stable doses of atorvastatin. PF-04950615 (RN316) is an investigational drug that is currently being studies as a cholesterol lowering therapy.
