Filter by:Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infected patients in the HIV registries of Johns Hopkins University, University of North Carolina and Vanderbilt University will be followed in the routine clinical care to estimate the rates of prespecified clinical events in this population.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infected patients in the Kaiser Permanente HIV registry wil be followed in the usual clinical care to estimate the rates of specified clinical events. The rates will be stratified by relevant characteristics like age, CD4 counts, HIV Viral Load (VL), HIV medication history. The rates in the HIV infected cohort wil be compared with the rates of these events in patients in the Kaiser Permanente database who are not infected with HIV.
The purpose of this study is to see the effect of etravirine or TMC278 on how telaprevir is absorbed into the body and the effect of telaprevir on how etravirine or TMC278 are absorbed into the body when administered together.
The purpose of this study is to describe the safety, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics of a regimen of atazanavir powder boosted with ritonavir and an optimized dual nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor in pediatric patients aged ≥3 months to <11 years.
This is a phase IV, open label, prospective, one phase pharmacokinetic and observational study. Twenty HIV-1 infected subjects will be recruited, subjects will switch antiretroviral therapy to: - tenofovir/emtricitabine 245/200 mg daily (Truvada™) plus - raltegravir 400 mg twice daily On day 28, all subjects will attend for an intensive 24 hour pharmacokinetic visit.
The purpose of this research study is to explore what role immune cells within the gut (the sigmoid colon) have locally and on the immune system of patients infected with HCV, HIV or HCV/ HIV co-infection.
Childhood tuberculosis (TB) accounts for 11% of the total 9 million annual TB cases and the difficulty of its diagnosis is increased in case of HIV infection in children. The aim of this study is to improve TB diagnosis in HIV-infected children by developing a new diagnostic algorithm incorporating new tools available such as: - interferon gamma release assays (IGRAs), as alternative to the tuberculin skin test - alternative specimen collection methods such as string test (or Enterotest (R)), nasopharyngeal aspirates and stools samples, as alternatives to gastric aspirate - the Xpert MTB/RIF assay
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infected patients who meet the entry criteria for the maraviroc pivotal trials (Maraviroc versus Optimized Therapy in Viremic Antiretroviral Treatment-Experienced Patients, MOTIVATE) will be identified from the EuroSIDA HIV cohort. The rates of specific clinical adverse events in this identified patient population will be compared with the rates of these events in the participants of the MOTIVATE trials.
In the early years of the HIV epidemic in Africa, female sex workers (FSWs) were identified as a high-prevalence, high-incidence, core group among whom the extraordinary prevalence of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) facilitated transmission of the virus to their clients, who then infected low-risk women not involved in the sex trade. In resource-poor settings, control of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) among FSWs is difficult. The purpose of this study is to determine whether periodical antibiotic treatment (PAT) is effective in controlling these infections among West African FSWs. The study is designed as a cluster-randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial conducted in West Africa. The study population consists of "seaters" FSWs who work from their homes in well-defined areas. Clusters will be paired according to their size and demographic characteristics of FSWs and clients. Within each pair, one cluster will be randomly allocated to the intervention and the other to the placebo group. At enrollment, participants will be interviewed, a pelvic examination performed, cervical swabs obtained for NG and CT polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and current cervicitis or vaginitis managed syndromically. Blood specimens will be obtained for HIV testing. All participants will be given free condoms and counseled on risk reduction. Monthly follow-up will be conducted within FSW communities, alternating with clinic visits where cervical samples will be collected. Study drugs (azithromycin 1 g and ciprofloxacin 500 mg, and their identical placebos) will be distributed every month according to a predefined schedule: directly-observed intake of azithromycin at months 1, 4 and 7, and ciprofloxacin at months 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9. Data will be analyzed with SAS. The investigators will assess the time trends in NG and CT prevalence separately in both study groups using χ2-for-trend.
This is a randomized clinical trial to examine the effects of a brief counseling intervention for heavy drinking HIV-infected men who have sex with men compared to HIV care as usual. The study tests the hypothesis that brief counseling will lower drinking in these patients and that reductions in drinking will be associated with better HIV-related outcomes.
