Filter by:The main purpose of this clinical study is to see if a maintenance dose of GEN-003 reduces the number of days that subjects have a genital herpes recurrence. The second purpose of the study is to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a maintenance dose of GEN-003.
A 4-armed cluster randomised controlled trial conducted among secondary schoolgirls in Siaya, western Kenya, where clusters are the unit of allocation and schoolgirls the unit of measurement. The overall aim of the trial is to inform evidence-based policy to develop intervention programmes which improve adolescent girls' health, school equity and life-chances. The primary objective is to determine the impact of menstrual cups or cash transfer alone, or in combination, compared against controls, on a composite of deleterious outcomes (HIV, HSV-2 infection, and school dropout) over 3 schoolyears follow-up.
This is a pilot study to determine the safety and efficacy of a novel adjuvanted hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine formulated as a potential therapeutic vaccine against chronic HBV infection. An ongoing human clinical trial of this HBV vaccine in a prophylactic setting has confirmed this vaccine to be more effective at inducing seroconversion as measured by development of Hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) in poor responder subjects than the standard alum-adjuvanted HBV vaccine, providing promise that this new vaccine may also be able to induce HBV viral control and/or seroconversion in chronically infected subjects
Preterm delivery (PTD), together with low birthweight (LBW), is the leading cause of infant death and illness, affecting 500,000 births with annual medical costs of more than $26 billion in the U.S. each year. Identifying changeable risk factors to reduce PTD is considered a top research priority. Recent research has shown genital herpes infection (HSV) is associated with increased risks of PTD and LBW. More importantly, treating this infection, including infection with no symptoms, using readily available antiviral medications can be effective in removing the risk due to HSV. Thus, early identification and treatment of HSV in pregnant women could be an effective way to prevent PTD and LBW. Currently, many pregnant women with HSV infection, especially those with no symptoms, choose not to treat due to (a) a lack of demonstrated benefit of treatment and (b) general hesitance to use medications during pregnancy due to safety concerns for the fetus. Thus, emerging evidence of an increased risk of PTD/LBW associated with HSV infection, if untreated, and treatment effectiveness by anti-herpes medications has significantly changed current treatment paradigms among pregnant women. This evidence also provides new hope that effectively treating HSV infection among pregnant women, especially before the 3rd trimester, could lead to a new method to reduce PTD and LBW and reduce racial/ethnic disparities in these risks due to high rates of the infection in minority groups. To further examine the effectiveness of treating HSV in pregnant women to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes, the investigators propose to conduct a prospective cohort study with a two-stage design combining the large pregnant women population (N=90,000) in Stage I identified through Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) electronic medical records (EMRs), with a Stage II sample to collect detailed information on additional factors that might muddle our understanding of this issue. This study will address the following: (1) Does treating HSV infection in pregnant women reduce the risk of PTD or LBW? (2) Does timing of the treatment during pregnancy influence treatment effectiveness? (3) Do other factors influence treatment effectiveness? and (4) Does HSV infection in pregnancy, if untreated, increase the risk of PTD and LBW, compared to no infection? Answers to these questions will be valuable to pregnant women and clinicians, and directly address their concerns when making treatment decisions
The goals of this clinical study are to compare the effectiveness, safety and tolerability of study drug, tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), versus placebo in teens and children with CHB and to learn more about the dosing levels in children.
The purpose of the study was to assess the efficacy and safety of telbivudine at a dose of 20 mg/kg up to a maximum of 600 mg q.d. in compensated pediatric HBeAg-positive and negative CHB patients aged 2 to <18 years with the indication of antiviral CHB treatment. This study was part of the commitments of the pediatric development plan for telbivudine in Europe and US.
Since the implementation of universal vaccination in 1984, the chronic HBV carier rate in our general population reduced from 15-20%, down to < 1% in the post-vaccination population. However, children born to HBeAg positive mothers still may be infected with HBV despite immunization. To further reducing the HBV infection in our people, strategies in reducing infection rate in this high risk group are mandatory. Previous small scale studies using lamivudine treatment in pregnant woman in the third trimester has proved effective in reducing children infection rate. The aims of the present study are to conduct a clinical trial in using Tenofovir (category B) to reduce mother-to-infant transmission, and to monitor the hepaitits B viral status and mother hepatitis occurrence. The clinical trials will screen cases of HBsAg positive pregnant women aged 20 to 40 years at gestational at 20-32 weeks. They will be tested for HBsAg and HBeAg. In whom both markers are positive, HBV viral load will be tested. An estimated 180 pregnant women with high HBV viral load (>10^8 copies/mL) will be recruited in the study; including 80-100 subjects treated with Tenofovir 300 mg daily starting from 30-32 weeks of gestation (3rd trimester) and continued to 1 month after delivery; and 80-100 pregnant women are enrolled as controls with no drug given to the mother. The newborn babies are given with HBIG within 24 hours after delivery, and HBV vaccines at 0, 1 and 6 months. Maternal complete blood count (CBC) data tested in the first prenatal examination will be recorded. Plasma AST、ALT levels and HBV DNA are tested before Tenofovir treatment, 1 month after treatment, at the time of delivery, and at 1, 2, 4 and 6 months after delivery. HBsAg、HBeAg、anti-HBs and AST、ALT are tested in the children at day 1, 6 moths and 1 year after birth. The primary outcome is reduction of the HBsAg carrier rate of the children at 6 months of age. The secondary outcome is HBsAg carrier rate of the children at 12 months of age, the change of liver function, HBeAg, and viral load in pregnant mother after treatment. A follow-up study for investigating safety of mothers and children that has been exposed to maternal tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) during pregnancy in reducing mother-to-infant hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmissions is conducted. The follow-up study included mother-children pairs 2-4 years after delivery of the children.

The purpose of this study is to study the prevalence of EBV, HCMV, HHV-6 in saliva and on the toothbrush patient with periodontitis.
This proposed pharmacokinetic study will test the hypothesis that in critically ill patients with respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation such as might be anticipated to be needed to treat patients with severe influenza pneumonia, oseltamivir administered enterally via nasogastric tube, with and without concomitant food or alimentation, will have similar oral bioavailability to that observed in ambulatory adults ill with influenza in whom oseltamivir therapy 75 mg BID is efficacious and well tolerated. Additionally, this experiment will test the hypothesis that increasing the dose (150 mg), with and without concomitant enteral feeding, will show a proportionate increase in bioavailability. Relative oral bioavailability will be assessed from plasma concentration vs. time over 12 hrs and urinary recovery of drug from 0 to 48 hrs after administration.
