CYP2C19 Genetic Polymorphism on the Accuracy of Proton-Pump Inhibitor Testing

Background/Aim: To evaluate the optimal dosage of rabeprazole for proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) testing of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and to test the influence of cytochrome P (CYP) 2C19 polymorphism in a population with a high prevalence of people who poorly metabolize PPIs. Patients and Methods: In this randomized, open-label trial, patients with symptoms suggestive of GERD were randomized to receive a two-week test with 20-mg or 40-mg rabeprazole after diagnostic endoscopy. Symptom response was assessed with a four-grade daily record; in addition, DNA from peripheral blood leukocytes was genotyped for CYP2C19 polymorphism with polymerase chain reaction-restrict fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique.

Symptom Assessment in Adult Patients With Erosive GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) or enGERD (Endoscopic-negative GERD) After Treatment With Pantoprazole (BY1023/M3-343)

The aim of this study is to compare investigator and patient-assessed gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms in patients with erosive GERD or endoscopic-negative GERD (enGERD). An endoscopy will be performed at study start and study end. During the study, the patients will complete a patient-orientated, self-assessed reflux questionnaire (ReQuestâ„¢ questionnaire). The study duration consists of a baseline period (8 days) and treatment period (28 days). Pantoprazole (tablet) will be administered once daily at one dose level. The study will provide further data on safety and tolerability of pantoprazole.

to Assess the Efficacy and Safety of the Probiotic E. Coli Strain M17 on Patients With GERD

The study is an Open Label, Prospective, Non Comparative, Pilot, clinical trial design. Patients with inadequate relief in GI symptoms associated with GERD despite PPI treatment will be screened and those who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria will perform a glucose breath test for bacterial overgrowth . Each patient will then complete a questionnaire to record their GERD related symptoms. Each patient will then receive a daily intake of 30 mL two times daily, 30 minutes before meals for a period of 4 weeks. During the course of the trial, they will have 4 visits with the study physician to assess treatment compliance and occurrence of adverse events, and will complete periodic daily diaries to record compliance.

Study of Cryotherapy Treatment of Barrett's Esophagus and Early Esophageal Cancer

The purpose of this study is to confirm the effectiveness and safety of a new medical device which sprays liquid nitrogen through an upper endoscope (cryotherapy) to treat Barrett's esophagus with high-grade dysplasia and early esophageal cancer. It is hypothesized that this treatment will remove the abnormal lining of the esophagus and allow the normal esophageal lining to return.

Sleep Disorders and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

This study will investigate Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)as a cause of sleep disturbance. Patients with GERD may experience all or some of the following symptoms: stomach acid or partially digested food re-entering the esophagus (which is sometimes referred to as heartburn or regurgitation) and belching. Even very small, unnoticeable amounts of rising stomach acid may cause patients to wake up during the night. This study will also investigate the effect of Rabeprazole, (brand name Aciphex) on patients with known insomnia. Rabeprazole is an FDA approved medication already marketed for the treatment of GERD.
