Implementation of a Multi-component, Supervised Exercise Program for Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

This quality improvement study aims to implement a supervised, multi-component exercise program for patients type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) from a primary care practice. Rosemount Clinic patients with T2DM will be invited to participate in free group exercise classes as part of a 3-month program of structured exercise to enhance adherence to the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) clinical best practice guidelines. Interested patients will attend an initial 1-hour information session and then will complete short, monthly questionnaires about their current quality of life and experience with the exercise program. Participation is voluntary and patients may drop out at any time.

Differences in Rate of Recovery Between Young and Middle-aged Men After Downhill Running

The aim of this study is to evaluate differences in rate of recovery between young and middle-aged men after prolonged (downhill) running. Thirty healthy young (n=15, 18-30 y) and middle-aged (n=15, 35-50y) men will be recruited for this study. Participants will perform 60 minutes of downhill run at 65% of their maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). Recovery parameters will be evaluated during 48 hours following the downhill protocol, and will include changes in performance tests, inflammatory markers, muscle integrity and heart-rate variability. Questioners will be used to evaluate muscle soreness and fatigue. We hypothesized that middle-aged males will have longer rate of recovery following the downhill running protocol, as compared to younger age males.

Impact of Exercise Combined With Inulin Propionate Ester on Fat Oxidation

There is evidence to suggest that responsiveness to exercise training programmes can be expected to be influenced by changes in resting fat oxidation, an important factor in the aetiology of obesity. Our previous work has shown that oral supplementation with inulin propionate ester (IPE) reduces intra-abdominal fat and prevents weight gain and that oral propionate intake enhances resting fat oxidation. The effects of IPE combined with exercise training on resting fat oxidation and body fatness are unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of 4-weeks IPE supplementation, in combination with a moderate intensity exercise training programme, on whole body fat oxidation and on plasma GLP-1 and PYY.

Testing the Implementation of Movement-to-Music in a Community Fitness Center and Blended Onsite and Teleexercise Class

To prepare for a large scale-up study, the goal of this pilot implementation trial is to examine the feasibility of Movement-to-Music (M2M©) delivery mechanisms through two channels: 1) a group-based M2M© program conducted onsite at a local YMCA; and 2) a blended program that provides Y-M2M© and a home-based M2M© (B-M2M©) via videoconferencing. A key element of this pilot is to examine issues associated with participant-provider interactions, and to better understand the robustness of the technology to deliver a group-based (teleexercise) version of M2M© in the home setting.
