Establishing good oral health-related habit is challenging among younger children, especially for preschool children with special needs, as they have physical, mental, sensory, behavioural, emotional, and chronic medical conditions that requires health care beyond the routines. Existing evidences showed that children with special needs have poorer oral health status and more challenging behaviours than their counterparts in main stream schools. Visual pedagogy, such as social stories, have been applied to teach a variety of skills or behaviours to individuals with special needs. They are short stories demonstrating the target skill or behaviour, and then the readers are expected to perform the target skill or behaviour following the demonstrations. Giving the evidence that children with special needs can understand complex situations and learn new practices by using those stories, we expect to apply a package of structured social stories to modify oral health-related behaviours (tooth brushing, healthy eating, dental visit), and thereby, improve oral health status among preschool children with special needs. Establishment of good oral-health related behaviours in early childhood will benefits children in their future life. Additionally, visual pedagogy-assisted oral health education is relatively easy and safe to implement. If proven effective, social story-based preventive care can be recommended to special children globally.
Family-centred care (FCS) is considered the best practice in providing rehabilitation to children with disabilities and special needs. Family-centred care has been described as a partnership approach to healthcare decision making. As a philosophy of healthcare, today many multidisciplinary healthcare facilities have organized their services according to a family-centred approach. TheMeasure of Processes of Care (MPOC) is the most widely used instrument to assess parents' self-reported experiences of family-centred behaviours of rehabilitation services providers. The aim of this study is to translate the scale to Turkish and to determine validity and reliability of The Measure of Processes of Care (MPOC 56- 20- SP)
The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is frequently reported in subjects with trisomy 21. The consequences of this syndrome are expressed in various disorders such as cognitive and cardiovascular alterations. It is also reported a premature exhaustion with the achievement of various professional or recreational activities, as well as an increase in the frequency of daytime sleepiness. In trisomy 21, there are factors that are systematically associated with obstructive apnea. The identification of these factors would make it possible to diagnose OSAS earlier, under-diagnosed in the population with trisomy 21 even though these OSAS are associated with increased cardiovascular risks. The aim of this study is to identify the predictive factors associated with sleep apnea in the trisomy population in order to propose early detection. OSAS treatment in a young adult with Down syndrome could reduce physical fatigue apparition during various activities, reduce daytime sleepiness, and have a positive impact on physical fitness, and therefore more broadly on health.
This study is designed to evaluate whether children with Down syndrome and children with typical development exhibit different levels of accuracy demonstrating novel verbs taught under three conditions: semantic cues (perform action), syntactic cues (sentence frame), and combined (syntactic and semantic cues). The participants complete an eligibility evaluation and then one verb learning session (approximately 60 minutes in length). During that verb learning session they are taught sets of words under each condition (i.e., within-subjects design) and then asked to identify and label those target words immediately after instruction.
Combined first-trimester screening represents the gold standard of risk assessment for the presence of trisomy 21, 18, and 13. The concept is based on the age risk, the measurement of fetal nuchal translucency (NT), and the determination of serum markers free beta-hCG and PAPP-A in maternal blood. In recent years it has been shown that the risk assessment can be improved by combining in-depth ultrasound and cell-free DNA analysis from maternal blood. In their latest study, the investigators were able to detect all fetuses with trisomy 21, 18, and 13 through this procedure. No normal fetus displayed an increased risk. In contrast, the detection rate in classic, combined first-trimester screening is about 95% and the false-positive rate is 3-5%. In this study the investigator examine the test quality - especially the false positives - of cell-free DNA analysis on trisomy 21, 18 and 13 as well as on the microdeletion 22q in 1000 pregnancies.
This study tests the hypothesis that objectively derived spectacle prescriptions based on wavefront aberration measurements of the eyes of individuals with Down syndrome can provide an improvement in visual acuity over that obtained with spectacle prescriptions based on standard clinical prescribing techniques. The objectively derived prescriptions are derived using strategies to optimize retinal image quality as measured by image quality metrics, and thus these prescriptions will be referred to as metric-derived.
To evaluate the outcome of a prednisolone and low dose methotrexate based protocol in Down syndrome children with ALL (DS-ALL) in an Asia-wide study. The treatment protocol was modified based upon backbone of Taiwan Pediatric Oncology Group (TPOG)-ALL protocol in which risk classification will be guided by level of flow minimal residual disease (MRD) instead.
This is the first study about Neuropsychological function and OSAS in Taiwan. Although the correlation between OSAS and neuropsychological abnormalities had been reported, it is worth to understand more about the detailed domains that involved in our cohort. After this, investigators can dissect the cause of mental retardation in DS and help for further treatment strategies.
This study aims to develop and evaluate biomarkers using non-invasive optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) as well as ultra-widefield (UWF) fundus photography to assess the structure and function of the retinal and choroidal microvasculature and structure in persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Parkinson's Disease (PD), or other neurodegenerative disease, diseases as outlined.
