Emotional Regulation in People With Co-occurring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use Disorder

The aim of this project is to look at emotional regulation in people with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD). This study will explore how people with PTSD-SUD regulate their emotions and how this might explain the relationship between these two disorders. In turn, this may inform effective treatment strategies for people with comorbid PTSD-SUD. Emotional regulation refers to the way in which people process and respond to their emotions. PTSD and SUD commonly cooccur and this is associated with adverse outcomes including high rates of relapse, overdose, and suicide. We therefore need effective treatments to address this clinical concern. Evidence suggests emotional regulation might be important in the development and maintenance of PTSD and SUD and therefore it might be a useful target for treatment. However, most research in this area has been quantitative and has not considered how gender, social circumstances and trauma or substance type might affect the way people regulate their emotions. This study will recruit 40 adults with trauma histories and PTSD who are currently receiving treatment in a community drug and alcohol service for their substance use. Participants will be interviewed to explore how they regulate their emotions and how this relates to their social circumstances. This study will also explore whether gender, substance or trauma type affect the way people regulate their emotions. We hope this will help to improve treatment for people with PTSD and SUD.

Transdiagnostic Markers of Cognitive Symptoms in Disorders Affective.

The objective of this project is to determine the concordance between the subjective and objective evaluation of cognitive functions in affective patients in partial remission through scales and cognitive tests that would be easily implemented in the different mental health care devices. This is a cross-sectional case-control study of non-probabilistic sampling, which will include a group of patients diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder and a group of healthy controls from the same population and matched by age, gender and years of education with the group of patients. Patients will be recruited from the psychiatric service of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau who meet the inclusion criteria, and they will undergo a blood draw, a clinical assessment, a complete neuropsychological examination together with scales of subjective perception of cognitive deficit, a measure of cognitive reserve and an evaluation of psychosocial functionality. Pulse Momentum Research in Pulse Diagnosis

Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history of disease diagnosis applications by pulse diagnosis. The pulse "position", "number", "shape", and "momentum" can be used as four guidelines for pulse classification. However, the finger feeling is difficult to be expressed in a quantitative approach for clinical teaching and illness-state recognition. The pressure sensor was applied to measure wrist pulse waveforms for analysis. In this research project, the "discrete wavelet transformation (DWT)" is used to decompose the time-domain pulse into several sets of signals, which are allocated at different frequency bands. The high-frequency signal over the range of 12-50 Hz is then acquired to calculate the spectral energy ratio (SER) for quantization of the pulse momentum to the persons under the suboptimal health status (SHS).

Prospective Validation of the CoDE-HF Algorithm for the Diagnosis of Acute Heart Failure

Acute heart failure is a life-threatening condition where the heart is suddenly unable to pump blood around the body. It can be challenging to diagnose because the symptoms often mimic other conditions. Previous studies have showed that delays in making the correct diagnosis result in worse outcomes. We therefore developed a decision-support tool called CoDE-HF that uses a computer algorithm to combine levels of a blood test called NT-proBNP with patient factors to calculate the probability of acute heart failure for an individual. In this project, we wish to evaluate the performance of CoDE-HF in approximately 2,000 patients attending the Emergency Department with suspected acute heart failure. We will store surplus material from their blood tests to measure NT-proBNP and link information from their electronic health records with other routinely collected medical information in regional and national databases in order to evaluate this algorithm.
