Filter by:Control of diarrhoeal disease requires a comprehensive package of preventive and curative interventions. in Zambia, the Programme for Awareness and Elimination of Diarrhoea (PAED) aims to reduce child deaths by combating diarrhoea in Lusaka province, Zambia. The behaviour change component of the PAED programme seeks to change behaviours important for diarrhoea prevention (handwashing with soap and exclusive breastfeeding) and improved treatment outcomes (use of oral rehydration solution (ORS) and zinc in home management of child diarrhoea). The study aims to evaluate the feasibility of implementing a multiple behaviour change community programme to tackle diarrhoeal disease in children under-five and to assess the impact of this programme on practice of the target behaviours by caregivers of children under-five. The research questions will be answered through a a two-arm cluster-randomised trial (eight clusters per study arm).
The purpose of this study is to determine which of two different preparations of probiotics is effective in the treatment of acute viral diarrhoea in children.
The study will evaluate if administration of probiotic Culturelle (Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG) along with antibiotics can help decrease the occurrence of diarrhea caused by antibiotics as well as Clostridium difficile Diarrhea.
The overall aim is to characterize and to compare the extent and quantity of C. difficile stool shedding, perianal colonization and environmental contamination in patients who received oral fidaxomicin, oral metronidazole, or oral vancomycin. This is a prospective, randomized, microbiologic and molecular, study of environmental contamination from patients with proven C. difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD).

This project applies a randomized community design to test the effectiveness of health center level co-packaging and counseling messages to improve provider and caregiver behavior in the treatment of diarrhea with zinc & oral rehydration salts (ORS) and treatment of pneumonia with zinc & antibiotics in children aged 2-59 mo old. We will evaluate the adherence of caregivers in 10 health posts in 5 municipalities randomly assigned to receive the health center level co-packaging and counseling messages in addition to current standard care, by comparing them with the caregivers in 10 health posts in 5 municipalities randomly assigned to the receive only the current standard of care. Cost-effectiveness of co-packaging at the health-center level, as a means of improving provider treatment and counseling practices and caregiver adherence, will be evaluated. The main objective is to establish the effectiveness of a facility level co-packaging and counseling messages for increasing the adherence by caregivers of children aged 2-59 mo old to the prescribed 10 day treatment with zinc to complement ORS for the treatment of diarrhea and zinc to complement the antibiotics for the treatment of pneumonia diagnosed and treated in public health posts. Specific Quantitative Objectives: • To determine if visible co-packaging with pre-tested counseling messages: - Improves adherence of caregivers of children towards the prescribed zinc treatment. - Improves knowledge, awareness or attitudes of caregivers of children and health providers at public health care centers towards the prescribed zinc treatment. - Results in overall increase in health care-seeking for the treatment of diarrhea and pneumonia at public health care centers. Specific Qualitative Objectives: - To establish the perception, attitudes and experiences of caregivers towards the visible co-packaging with pre-tested counseling messages to promote the prescribed zinc treatment. - To establish the perception, attitudes and experiences of health providers at public health care centers towards the visible co-packaging with pre-tested counseling messages to promote the prescribed zinc treatment. - To establish the perception, attitudes and experiences of children aged 4 to 5 years old towards the visible co-packaging with pre-tested counseling messages to promote the prescribed zinc treatment.
The goal of this clinical research study is to learn if calcium alumina-silicate (CASAD) can help to stop your diarrhea. Researchers also want to know if this drug can help decrease the duration of your diarrhea. In this study, CASAD will be compared to a placebo. A placebo is not a drug. It looks like the study drug but it is not designed to treat any disease or illness. It is designed in this study to be compared with the study drug to learn if the study drug has any real effect.
RATIONALE: Polymerized (cross-linked) sucralfate malate paste (ProThelial) may be an effective single therapy approach for the management of chemoradiation mucositis, treating and preventing its occurrence in the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine. PURPOSE: This observational multi-phase trial is studying how well polymerized (cross-linked) sucralfate malate paste (ProThelial) works to prevent and treat mucositis in adult patients who are to receive or have received chemo/radiation therapy that have caused or is anticipated to cause mucositis in the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small or large intestine. The Phase IV study addresses prevention and treatment in the oral cavity. The Phase I study addresses prevention and treatment in the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine.
