Filter by:The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of ocular topic antiinflammatory therapy (sodic nepafenac at 0.1% or ketorolac at 0.5%) to treat center point thickness secondary to selective photocoagulation in diabetics with clinically significant macular edema.
The purpose of this study is to identify the severity level distribution at the moment of diagnosis, in diabetic patients with macular edema from a Mexico City sample, and to identify the rate with severe macular edema that needed immediate treatment.
There is much evidence that localized low grade inflammatory processes may contribute to the microvascular complications of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus including sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy. Some biomarkers for inflammation have been found to be elevated in diabetes patients and correlations between those biomarkers and the severity of diabetic complications have been found in the last years. The relation between this low grade inflammation and the microvascular changes observed in diabetic retinopathy is, however, not well characterized. In the present study patients with different stages of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy will be included. Several markers of inflammation will be measured from blood samples. These markers will be related to vascular factors including flicker-induced vasodilatation as a marker of endothelial dysfunction and perifoveal leukocyte velocity and density as measured with the blue field entoptic phenomenon. In addition, the ophthalmologic status of the patients will be assessed according to the Modified Airlie House classification. A multiple regression model will be employed to study the association between the different methods.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of anterior chamber paracentesis, brimonidine and oral acetazolamide to reduce intra-ocular pressure variations after intravitreal bevacizumab injection.
Direct intravitreal administration of medication is the preferred method of treatment for uveitis and retinal vascular disorders. The eye is a self contained organ relatively isolated from the systemic circulation by the tight blood retinal barrier. Effective intraocular drug levels can be achieved with a much smaller amount of medication if injected intravitreally and this also results in minimal systemic exposure to the patient. Preliminary studies have shown that adalimumab may have a positive role in the management of uveitis in humans and can be an effective treatment intravitreally in animal models. No data has been published yet on intravitreal use of adalimumab in human subjects.
Diabetic eye disease remains a major cause of visual loss for individuals with type 1 diabetes, despite currently available treatments. Preliminary studies indicate that islet cell transplantation, a new treatment for type 1 diabetes, may be beneficial for some people. This study is designed to test the hypothesis that islet cell transplantation is more effective than current medical therapy in preventing the progression of diabetic eye disease.
In this study, regressed proliferative diabetic retinopathy, very severe, severe and moderate non-prolifrative diabetic retinopathy patients who were going to have a cataract surgery, underwent a complete eye examination, OCT, FAG and color photography 2 weeks prior to their operation. All patients divided in two: 1) control group (Phyco,PCIOL), 2) triamcinolone treatment group (Phaco with PCIOL+IVT). One month after surgery a complete eye examination will be done especially; IOP and endophthalmitis. A 6 month follow-up will be done for these two groups and diabetic retinopathy progression will be checked.
The purpose of this study is to validate and characterize phenotypes of diabetic retinopathy (DR) progression based on available clinical data (demographic, systemic and ophthalmic data).
Impaired retinal blood flow has been implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. Patel et al. (1992) showed that retinal blood flow increases with the level of diabetic retinopathy. Grunwald et al. (1996) reported that patients with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) of relatively short duration have increased retinal blood flow, even before the onset of diabetic retinopathy. On the other hand the data of Bursell et al. (1996) indicate that IDDM patients have reduced retinal blood flow, when they have normal blood glucose levels, but this study may have considerable methodological limitations. Acute elevations of blood glucose levels, however, result in an increase in retinal blood flow (Grunwald et al. 1987, Bursell et al. 1996). Based on previous experimental data the investigators hypothesize that ocular blood flow is increased in early diabetes and reduced at later stages of the disease. Previous studies have demonstrated that metabolic conditions such as hyperglycemia influence outcome parameters and thereby might have confounded results regarding ocular blood flow in diabetic retinopathy. The investigators will therefore study patients with IDDM during euglycemic conditions.
