Clinical Assessment of Caries and Dental Plaque Based on Auto-fluorescence Imaging System

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the applicability of auto-fluorescence imaging system to detect and quantify caries and dental plaque. Participants were advised to rinse their mouth with distilled water to exclude any chance of fluorescence from food debris. A well trained physicist majored in optical spectroscopy captured auto-fluorescence images of buccal aspects of two maxillary central incisors and occlusal aspects of four first molars from each patient in a dark room. Then they chewed a disclosing agent to assess the Quigley Hein plaque index modified by Turesky of each tooth. Furthermore, participants were also required to brush their teeth for 3min, then International Caries Detection and Assessment System(ICDAS)codes of relevant teeth to evaluate degrees of caries were recorded by an experienced dentist using a mouth mirror and explorer. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient between colorimetric parameters of fluorescence image and the plaque index and ICDAS code were calculated to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of auto-fluorescence imaging system.

Celtra Duo Computer Assisted Design/Computer Assisted Machining (CAD/CAM) Dental Crown Study

This investigation will be a clinical trial to study the performance of a newly developed high strength ceramic material for crowns. The ceramic has been approved by the FDA for patient treatment. A computer technique will be used to fabricate the crowns in a single appointment without the need for a temporary crown or second appointment. Two adhesive resin cement techniques will be used to hold the crown to the tooth and they will be evaluated for creating sensitivity to the tooth. The purpose of the study is to measure how well the high strength crowns function over an extended period of time.

Clinical Evaluation of Kerr SonicFill™ 2 vs 3M ESPE Filtek™ Supreme Ultra Universal Restorative

The purpose of this study is to compare esthetic, functional and biological properties of two restoration materials used to fill cavities. One material is called "Filtek™ Supreme" which is a traditional tooth colored resin composite that is placed in the cavity in layers and hardened with UV light. The second material is called "SonicFill™ 2," which is a bulk fill composite that uses an ultrasonic hand piece to change the material from a solid into a liquid in order to place it into the cavity. This material can be placed in the cavity in 1 layer, and is hardened using UV light. Both materials have been FDA approved as non-significant risk devices for filling cavities. In each subject, one tooth with a cavity will be randomly selected to receive one filling material, and a second tooth with a cavity will be randomly selected to receive the second material. The fillings will be observed over a two year period to determine clinical acceptability.

A Clinical Assessment of Glass Carbomer Cement

This study will evaluate the clinical performance of glass carbomer cement restorations in restoring proximal lesions in primary molars compared to that of resin modified glass ionomer cement and composite resin restorations. Teeth will be randomly assigned to one of the three restoration groups and the restorations will be evaluated clinically and radiographically every six months.

The Effects of Stainless Steel Crowns Applied With Hall Technique on Occlusal Vertical Dimension

In recent years restoring carious of fractured primary teeth with stainless steel crowns (SSC) has became more popular than ever. On the other hand the traditional operative approach of complete removal of caries is steadily losing support due to successful results with materials of high microleakage resistance. Treatment time and pain control in asymptomatic teeth has always been a problem in children. Hall technique is a minimally invasive treatment protocol that doesn't require local anesthesia, use of rotating devices for caries removal to restore primary teeth with SSC. But this protocol also raised questions in the scientific community about its possible effects on the dentition and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) for causing primary occlusal contact and increasing vertical dimension. The aim of our research is to study the effects of Hall technique's premature occlusal contact on TMJ.

Evaluation in Vivo of Dentifrice With Nanoencapsulated Fluoride

The literature recognizes that fluoride is the most widely used and studied means for dental remineralization. The use of fluoride toothpaste in brushing is considered more rational method for the prevention of caries. However, the current challenge of toothpaste is the substantivity, so new compounds have been introduced into these formulations. This study aims to evaluate the in vivo effect of fluoride dentifrice containing nanoencapsulated Fluoride (Nano-F) - in fluoride retention in saliva and dental plaque. A study of the clinical and laboratory type, crossover, double-blind, randomized will be held. After sample calculation, the total of 12 individuals aged between 18 and 35 years old, healthy, decayed, missing, and filled teeth index less than 6 and residents in brazilian northeast capital will be part of the sample. Fluoride bioavailability will be evaluated in the biofilm and saliva after the use of fluoridated weekly. The biofilm will be assessed on 1h and 12 h after brushing; and unstimulated saliva in times of 3, 15, 30, 45, 60 minutes and 12 hours after. It will be 3 toothpastes: 50% Nanoencapsulated Fluoride, 100% Nanoencapsulated Fluoride and Free sodium fluoride. Between weeks of use, brushing will be extended washout (without fluoride) to avoid carryover effect. inferential data analysis will be carried out, considering the amount of alpha <0.05. So knowing that caries is a dynamic process, the largest fluoride retention in the oral fluids promoted by the Nanoencapsulated Fluoride may have important impact on Des-Re process and in the control of dental caries

This protocol aims to assess the cost-efficacy and applicability of the treatment of lesions moderate caries using sealants as an alternative to the restorations on occlusal surfaces of deciduous teeth. Initially, a non-inferiority study was designed in order to verify if sealing could be non-inferior than restoration. In this case, it could be preferable since it is less invasive. Therefore, cost will be put forward into the analysis considering even reintervention during the follow-ups (cost-efficacy analyses). Finally, the acceptability could be another differential point between treatments.

Orthodontic appliance causes increase in plaque accumulation, especially around brackets, wires and attachments. Advances in orthodontics in recent time have led to improved quality of appliance and treatment procedures ultimately resulting in improvised standard of patient care. These bacteria metabolize different kind of carbohydrates accumulated around orthodontic appliances and create acidic environment in the oral cavity leading to enamel demineralization around the brackets and white spot lesions. This study was carried out to evaluate and compare the efficacy of probiotic toothpaste and chlorhexidine mouthwash in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with individuals who are not using them.
