Efficacy and Safety of Primary Teeth Anesthesia Using Nasal Spray in Children

68 healthy children from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Damascus University who require treatment for their primary maxillary second molars will be randomly assigned into one of two groups: experimental or control groups. In the experimental group, a lidocaine hydrochloride-epinephrine hydrochloride nasal spray will be applied to anesthetize upper second molar before the commencement of treatment. To assess the efficacy of this kind of anesthesia, a specific scale will be used by an external observer after capturing some video files of the performed treatment. To assess the safety of this procedure, vital signs will be recorded before and after treatment. Acceptance of the nasal spray will be recorded based on the child's behavior before and after treatment using Frankl scale. If anesthesia was not sufficient to proceed with the procedure, a rescue anesthesia would be used. Rescue anesthesia consists of an infiltration injection of lidocain hydrochloride 2% with epinephrine hydrochloride (1:100,000). In the control group, an intra-oral lidocaine-epinephrine injection will be applied due to treatment. Safety, efficacy and acceptance will be assessed in the same manner to what is performed in the experimental group.

Effect of CO2 Laser on Enamel White Spot Lesion Formation Around Orthodontic Brackets

This study aims to evaluate the clinical effect of CO2 laser on enamel resistance to white spot lesions formation around orthodontic brackets. 25 patients needing fixed orthodontic treatment will participate in the study, the CO2 laser will be applied in a split mouth design around orthodontic brackets in two contrast quarters of mouth in every patient and the other quarters will serve as a control. The white spot lesion formation will be monitored around the brackets during the orthodontic treatment after four and twelve weeks of irradiation with laser.

Role of Aloe Vera Versus Fluoride Toothpaste in Changing High to Low Salivary Bacterial Count

Preventing Early Childhood Obesity, Part 1: Family Spirit Nurture, 3-9 Months

This study aims to assess the impact of a brief home-visiting module, called "Family Spirit Nurture" (FSN), on American Indian (AI) parent feeding practices associated with increased risk for early childhood obesity, with a primary focus on delaying introduction of infants' Sugar Sweetened Beverage (SSB) (including soda, energy drinks, juice with added sugar and other drinks with added sugar) intake while teaching mothers complementary feeding and responsive parenting practices. The investigators will also assess how water insecurity may moderate parents' feeding of SSBs to young children. Finally, the investigators will explore whether maternal knowledge of oral health practices and/or reduction of infants' SSB intake influences early indicators of infant's oral health (i.e., infants' oral microbiome and plaque formation). Our evaluation will employ a randomized controlled design, in which the control condition receives a beneficial home-safety educational model and assistance in safety proofing their homes for small children. Assessments in both groups will occur at baseline (between 6 and 10 weeks postpartum) and 4 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months postpartum. Primary Aims: Aim 1: To determine the effectiveness of the brief (6 lessons) FSN home-visiting parent feeding practice module on reducing SSB initiation and frequency among infants between 3 and 12 months of age. Hypothesis 1: Infants whose mothers receive FSN vs. controls will be less likely to introduce SSBs between 3 and 12 months of age. Aim 2: To determine the effectiveness of FSN to promote optimal complementary feeding and responsive parenting practices. Hypothesis 2: Mothers who receive FSN vs. controls will be more likely to practice recommended complementary feeding and responsive parenting practices between 3 and 12 months of age. Aim 3: To determine the impact of water insecurity on SSB consumption among infants between 3 and 6 months of age. Hypothesis 2: Parents who report water insecurity vs. those who do not will be more likely to give infants SSBs between 3 and 6 months of age. Secondary Aims: Secondary Aim 1: To explore if provision of water to families reduces SSB intake among mothers and infants ages 6 to 9 months of age. Secondary Aim 2: To explore if infants in the FSN intervention have better oral health outcomes than control infants up to 12 months postpartum.

Efficacy Of A PVP-I Fluoride Varnish

The purpose of the study is to determine the efficacy of Advantage Anti-Caries Varnish. Single-center, double-blind, controlled Phase 2 study with parallel groups of children. Subjects will be stratified by early childhood education center and then randomized to receive either test varnish or control varnish topically to the teeth. Treatment will be administered quarterly for up to 24 months. The primary outcome is surface-level primary molar caries increment (d2-4mfs) at 24- months post baseline.

Laser in Caries Treatment - Patients´View, Pulpal Reactions and Survival of Fillings

The aim of this study was to evaluate the excavation time, patients´ experiences, pulpal reactions and survival of fillings when carious tissue was removed with Er:YAG laser compared to rotary bur. A prospective, single-blind, randomized and controlled investigation was performed. Patients with at least two primary caries lesions radiographically assessed as the same size were recruited. In each patient one cavity was excavated with rotary bur and one with Er:YAG laser technique. The time requested for excavation and local anaesthesia were measured. The prevalence of postoperative symptoms, pulpal vitality and the quality of fillings will be investigated during two years after the excavation occasion.
