Filter by:This research aimed to evaluate the risk of dental fluorosis by using an experimental fluoridated acidulated dentifrice compared to conventional dentifrices in two-to-four-year-old children residing in a non fluoridated area by the concentration of fluoride incorporated in childrens' nails, as well as the incorporation of F into the biofilm. Two hundred and ten children participated on this study. They were randomly allocated into three groups differing according to the type of dentifrice used over 12 months: G1:1100 ppm F, pH 4.5; G2:750 ppm F, pH 4.5; G3:1100 ppm F, pH 7.0. The dentifrice was placed on the toothbrush using the "drop" technique. The toenails of the biggest toe were collected in three moments, corresponding to the experimental period of use of the dentifrices (T1, T2 and T3), as well as the biofilm which was collected twice, 5 and 60 minutes after brushing. The nails and biofilm fluoride concentration were analyzed on a specific electrode using the HMDS diffusion facilitated technique.
The aim of this 2-arm parallel trial was to evaluate enamel demineralization after an indirect bonding technique in comparison to a direct bonding technique group using the quantitative light-induced fluorescence method. Thirty-six patients who needed fixed orthodontic treatment were randomly separated into either the direct bonding group or the indirect bonding group. Eligibility criteria included moderate crowding in the maxillary and mandibular dental arch, good oral hygiene, absence of craniofacial anomalies, no previous orthodontic treatment and no deciduous, congenitally missing or extracted teeth. Randomization was made at the start of the study with a statistical analysis program (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA.). For the patients in the indirect bonding group, bonding was performed with a flowable composite adhesive, while the patients in the direct bonding group received a bonding procedure with a conventional composite adhesive. Records were taken using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) with a Digital Biluminator (Inspektor Research Systems, Amsterdam, the Netherlands) in the pretreatment and posttreatment examination phases. The presence and extent of lesions on the buccal surfaces of all teeth, except the molar teeth, were assessed. The fluorescence loss, lesion area and percentage of fluorescence loss were determined using the system's software. The primary outcome of this study was evaluation of the effects of bonding techniques on white spot lesion formation by using the QLF method. Random sequence generation was performed with a computerized random 1:1 allocation using block sizes of 4. It was not possible for the clinicians and their interventions to be blocked. The patients and the specialists were blinded to the treatment groups when their treatment groups were aware.
Vital pulp therapy (VPT) is a general term for multiple procedures (indirect pulp cap, direct pulp cap and pulpotomy) all directed toward preserving pulp vitality and enable complete root development in immature teeth. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical, radiographic and histologic (if any teeth later are doomed for extraction for orthodontic or other reasons) success rate of VPT on treating cariously exposed permanent teeth with developmental defects of enamel. This will be a a prospective case series study including children between 6-16 years old having tooth with enamel hypomineralization defect with deep caries, restorable teeth , and no signs of infection. The teeth will be followed up both clinically and radiographically for 1 year after treatment. It is expected that the teeth will maintain vitality with resolution of symptoms (if present) and completion of root development in immature teeth after vital pulp therapy.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival of direct composite resin restorations in primary molars using different methods of isolation of the operative field: absolute isolation (local anesthesia, use of dental clamp and rubber dam) and relative isolation (cotton rollers and saliva ejector) by a randomized clinical trial. All composite restorations will be performed on children aged 4 to 10 years who present at least one dentin caries lesion or restoration needing replacement, without pulp involvement in a primary tooth. The treatments will be performed in the dental clinic of the University of São Paulo (FOUSP) by trained operators. The teeth will be randomized between the groups: Absolute Isolation (AI) and Relative Isolation (IR) and restored with composite resin (Scotchbond Universal Adhesive adhesive system and Filtek BulkFill composite resin - 3M ESPE) stratified by surface (single or multi surface). Restoration evaluation will be performed after 6, 12, 18, and 24 months by a blind, trained and calibrated examiner. As a primary outcome, the survival of the restorations will be evaluated. The secondary outcomes involve the procedure time (in minutes), professional and material cost (in Brazilian reais), as well as the cost-effectiveness of the restorations and the discomfort reported by the patient (measured using the Wong-Baker scale). The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log-rank test will be applied to the survival of the restoration. All variables will be modeled and compared with a Cox regression model of shared fragility. The discomfort reported by the patient will be analyzed by Ordinal Logistic Regression (α = 5%).
Remineralization effect of CPP-ACP and Fluoride (MI varnish) versus Fluoride varnish on white spot lesions in maxillary primary incisors
This double-blind RCT aimed to evaluate the effect of sugar-free snacks on caries risk in 6-9 years-old schoolchildren. Considering a 20% difference among groups, the number of subjects needed per group was set in 87. Two-hundred-seventy-one children at risk for caries measured through Cariogram were selected and randomly assigned to three groups consuming twice a day snacks containing Stevia or Maltitol or sugar for 42 days. Parents filled out a standardized questionnaire regarding personal, medical and oral behavioural information. Bleeding on probing, plaque pH and cariogenic microflora were assessed at baseline (t0), after 21 (t1) and 42 days of snacks' use (t2) and 120 days after the end of use (t3). Cariogram was also repeated at t2.
Fluoride is very effective in preventing dental decay (cavities) when applied in the form of a varnish on tooth surfaces. The purpose of this study is to verify if fluoride-releasing primer (OpalSeal) offers more protection against early dental decay (cavity) compared to conventional primer (Transbond XT) during treatment with braces.
This project aims to evaluate the relative efficacy of a peer-led intervention based on the Social Cognitive Theory and Health Belief Model versus the control (only pamphlet delivery) on increasing the prevalence of healthy oral behaviors and oral health status among adolescents in Hong Kong. A two-arm non-blinded randomized controlled trial will be conducted among random samples of adolescents enrolling in secondary schools in Hong Kong. In addition to a baseline survey, two follow-up evaluative surveys will be conducted at months 6 and 12. Survey questionnaires will be conducted to participants at three time points (baseline, 6-, 12-month follow-up). Dental check-up examinations will be evaluated at two time points (baseline, 6-month follow-up). Repeated measures will be used to record participants' background, oral behaviors, theory based cognition, and potential confounders. Validated scales will be used. DMFT, plaque index and CPI index will be used to assess the oral health status of participants.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological effectiveness of the ozone application in two-visit indirect pulp therapy. Materials and Methods: One hundred and five lower first molar teeth with deep caries lesion were included and randomly assigned three groups to apply two-visit indirect pulp therapy. Treatment procedure was applied without any disinfectant(control), with 60s 2% chlorhexidine digluconate(CHX) or 60s ozone application. In four different stage (after initial excavation, ozone/CHX application before the temporary restoration, four months later immediately after removing temporary restoration, and final excavation) dentin humidity, consistency and colour properties were recorded to evaluate the clinical characteristics of the tissue, and standard dentin samples were collected for the microbiological analysis of mutans streptococci, lactobacilli and the total number of colony forming units. The data were analyzed by using Mann-Whitney-U test for multiple comparisons.
: A split-mouth controlled clinical trial was carried out on 21 healthy, three to seven years old children, with 42 pairs (84 molars) of contralateral mandibular primary molars indicated for pulpotomy. One paired tooth in one side was designated to Biodentine (Group 1) and the other side for MTA (Group 2) as a pulp medicament. All pulpotomized teeth were finally restored with stainless steel crowns. Subjects were monitored clinically and radiographically at one, three, six and 12 months.
