Effect of Sour Cherry Anthocyanins on Healthy Human Saliva

The experiment is based on earlier research where it was proven that chewing gum usage with anthocyanin rich sour cherry extract significantly reduces the amount of human salivary alpha-amylase in unstimulated saliva samples and stimulated saliva samples taken in every 10 minutes till a half an hour as compared to placebo. The S. mutans counts' number on agar base cultures were greater in case of the stimulated samples of placebo and anthocyanin containing chewing gum groups. The investigators' aims were to extend the background of the earlier established phenomena: The sour cherry (anthocyanin) containing chewing gum usage (around 2 weeks, daily 3 times) is beneficent on the human oral microflora and cytokine level/expression.

The objective of this randomized control cinical trial will be to compare the effectiveness of precured composite inserts in obtaining tight and adequate conatacts in class 2 restorations when compared with the contact making instrument technique among patients treated at the operative depatment of Foundation Umiversity College of Dentistry. This is a single centre based randomized control clinical trial in which intervention arm 1 will get there class 2 restoration done with precured composite inserts and interention arm 2 will recieve treatment with contact making instrument technique. The control arm will recieve restoration using the conventional composite layering technique.

Diagnostic Ability of Near Infrared Transillumination Detecting Interproximal Caries as Compared to Conventional Bitewing Radiographs

Specific Aims 1. To determine the diagnostic efficacy of CariVu and BWX for detecting interproximal carious lesions in primary dentition BWX and CariVu images will be taken in random order. Number and depth of interproximal carious lesions will be determined by two independent examiners using both CariVu images and BWX. Intra- and inter-rater agreement and disagreement will be determined for all the images and radiographs. 2. To determine acceptability and comfort of CariVu and BWX as perceived by patient, parent and independent observer BWX and CariVu images will be taken in a random order and patient and parent will be given a questionnaire to complete as exit survey. The questionnaire will include few questions to determine perceived acceptability and comfort by parent and patient for either methods (CariVu and BWX). An independent observer (dental assistant) who is masked for the hypothesis of the study will be given a similar questionnaire to evaluate patient behavior using standard behavior assessment scales. 3. To determine difference in chair-side time required for BWX and CariVu image generation Time required to generate both, BWX and CariVu images will be documented by an independent observer (dental assistant) who is masked for the hypothesis of the study and will be compared to determine the overall clinical chair-side time required for generating diagnostic images for efficient and accurate treatment planning

Evaluation of Gel and Solution of Chlorhexidine in Disinfection Root Canals of Primary Anterior Teeth.

The process of removing bacteria and their products from the root canals is an essential step that is achieved through the combination of mechanical preparation and irrigation with chemicals. However, mechanical preparation alone can not reduce the microbial formations inside root canals, so at least about 35% of the root canal walls remain without the preparation tools reaching them. Many irrigants were used to irrigate the root canals, as sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine are the most famous. Although most studies have proven the effectiveness of sodium hypochlorite with its different concentrations in accomplishing this task, some of them showed the inability of the irrigant fluid to eliminate Enterococcus faecalis inside the canals. These bacteria are highly resistant, and therefore endodontic treatment fails in the long term.

Domiciliary Professional Oral Care for Dependent Older Adults

Keep brushing your teeth, twice a day, during life for healthy teeth and body. Not brushing your teeth regularly and well, may have a devastating effect on your teeth and your general health. The teeth could develop root caries resulting in pain, fractured teeth, tooth loss and trouble eating. Further, brushing your teeth insufficiently leads to higher number of bacteria in the oral cavity and could in frail individuals lead to aspirations pneumonias. With age, some of us will depend on daily care activities from others and help with daily toothbrushing. However, care dependent older adults often lack basic dental care (tooth brushing with fluoride tooth paste twice a day). Dental care at home is a service proved by dental personnel. Visits at a dental clinic decrease with age and especially with a dementia diagnosis. Dental care at home can deliver regular dental check-ups and dental treatments to individuals who experience difficulties attending a dental clinic. The effect of teeth cleaning performed at home on root caries development, has not yet been explored in care dependent older adults. Therefore, the aim is to study if the combination of high fluoride toothpaste used daily with teeth cleaning/ a reminder to use the toothpaste every third month, could be a method for preventing root caries development in this patient group. The hypothesis is that domiciliary professional cleaning will improve the oral health, as measured by root caries development, gingival bleeding, plaque accumulation and oral mucosal status, compared with a control group that receives oral care as usual.
