The purpose of this research study is to learn about the activity of oral Pancrecarb® (a pancreatic enzyme preparation which contains proteins that help to digest food), administered by mouth as a capsule filled with specially coated granules in patients taking exogenous pancreatic enzyme therapy. Specific enzymes activities will be determined from samples of stomach and intestinal fluids after a standard liquid meal.

A Study of Pulmozyme® (Dornase Alpha) in 3- to 5-Year-Old Patients With Cystic Fibrosis

This was a Phase IV, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial designed to evaluate the effect of Pulmozyme on pulmonary function, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and respiratory symptoms in 3- to 5-year-old children with cystic fibrosis (CF). Approximately 40 patients were planned to be enrolled in this study. However, only 3 patients were eligible for random allocation and received treatment: 1 patient in the Pulmozyme group and 2 patients in the placebo group. All 3 patients completed the study assessments but did not have usable pulmonary function test (PFT) data.

Phenylbutyrate/Genistein Duotherapy in Delta F508-Heterozygotes (for Cystic Fibrosis)

The purpose of this research study is to test a new combination of medicines, Phenylbutyrate and Genistein, to determine if they could be used to treat cystic fibrosis (CF). The most common genetic mutation found in patients with CF is called Delta F508. Due to this mutation, there is a lack of salt (chloride) movement in your nose, sinuses, lungs, intestines, pancreas and sweat glands. This lack of movement causes the clinical manifestations of the disease. Although Phenylbutyrate has been extensively used to treat patients with rare metabolic diseases, Phenylbutyrate is an investigational drug for the purpose of this study. Genistein is a naturally occurring substance that is found in food products such as soy and tofu, but is also an investigational drug for this study. When used together, both drugs may be able to restore normal chloride and salt (water) movements in body organs and glands in people with CF. We will be studying salt and water movement in the nose by a technique called nasal transepithelial potential difference (NPD).

Effect of Lubiprostone on Nutritional Status and Pulmonary Function in Adults With Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) results in thickened secretions in multiple organ systems including the lungs and gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Patients commonly suffer from nutritional deficiency, and achieving and maintaining adequate nutrition is an important goal of therapy because it is positively correlated with lung function. Lubiprostone activates chloride channels in the GI tract. Because its mechanism of action closely parallels the disease pathology, lubiprostone has the potential to provide GI benefits beyond the relief of constipation. This project is an observational study to examine the effects of lubiprostone on nutritional status and lung function in adults with CF. Our hypothesis is that lubiprostone will have beneficial effects on nutritional status.

A Trial of Pulmozyme Withdrawal on Exercise Tolerance in Cystic Fibrosis Subjects With Severe Lung Disease (TOPIC)

This was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of patients with severe, though stable, cystic fibrosis (CF) whose routine treatment included Pulmozyme. Patients were randomized to either continue Pulmozyme or have therapy withdrawn for 2 weeks (placebo group). Patients must have had stable CF symptoms without any change in therapy for 2 weeks prior to enrollment in order to participate.
