Reliability of Serum Calcium to Phosphorus (Ca/P) Ratio as an Accurate and Inexpensive Tool to Define Disorders of Ca-P Metabolism

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is the third most common endocrine disorder. The Ca/P ratio is an accurate tool to differentiate patients with PHPT (>3.5 if Ca and P are expressed in mg/dl) from healthy subjects. The reliability of this index is based on the fact that serum Ca and P are inversely related together. However, other disorders of the Ca-P metabolism, such as hypophosphoremia (HypoP) not related to PHPT, might also impair the Ca/P ratio. OBJECTIVE: To validate the accuracy of Ca/P ratio in the diagnosis of Ca-P metabolism disorders, including also patients with documented HypoP not related to PHPT. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective, case-control study will be carried out. Biochemical measurements will include parathormone (PTH), vitamin D, serum Ca and P, serum albumin and creatinine.

Atezolizumab Trial in Endometrial Cancer - AtTEnd

Atezolizumab is an engineered humanised monoclonal immunoglobulin G1 antibody that binds selectively to PD-L1 and prevents its interaction with PD-1 and B7-1. In May 2016 atezolizumab was approved by the FDA for patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma who have disease progression during or following any platinum-containing chemotherapy, or within 12 months of receiving chemotherapy before surgery (neoadjuvant) or after surgery (adjuvant); in October 2016 it was approved by the FDA for patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have disease progression during or following platinum-containing chemotherapy, and have progressed on an appropriate FDA-approved targeted therapy if their tumor has EGFR or ALK gene abnormalities. Finally, in April 2017 atezolizumab was granted accelerated approval by FDA for the first-line treatment of patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma who are not eligible for cisplatin chemotherapy. Combinations of atezolizumab with chemotherapeutic agents and/or targeted therapies were studied in different solid tumors such as melanoma, NSCLC, renal cell carcinoma and colorectal carcinoma. From these studies the AE profile of atezolizumab combinations were consistent with that of the individual agents. Finally, preliminary results of a Phase Ia study of Atezolizumab (NCT01375842) monotherapy in relapsed endometrial cancer were reported as abstract at ASCO 2017. Fifteen patients were evaluated for safety and efficacy with a minimum follow-up of 11.2 months. No G4-5 related AEs occurred. Regarding efficacy ORR was 13% [2/15] by RECIST. Atezolizumab seemed to have a favorable safety profile, with durable clinical benefit in some patients. Further studies with atezolizumab are warranted given its promising results in advanced endometrial cancer and the limited efficacy of current treatment options.

A Comparison of Platinum-based Therapy With TSR-042 and Niraparib Versus Standard of Care (SOC) Platinum-based Therapy as First-line Treatment of Stage III or IV Nonmucinous Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is a heterogeneous disease, characterized by complex molecular and genetic changes. The high expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor, programmed death receptor ligands 1 (PD-L1) expression, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage in ovarian tumors provide several targets for treatment and maintenance of disease response. Given the unmet medical need of participants with advanced or metastatic ovarian cancer, this study design will enable investigators to provide participants with current SOC for ovarian cancer for the duration of the study. This is a global, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled Phase 3 study that will primarily compare the progression-free survival (PFS) for participants receiving dostarlimab with SOC chemotherapy +/- bevacizumab followed by niraparib and dostarlimab maintenance +/- bevacizumab versus participants receiving SOC with chemotherapy followed by niraparib maintenance. This comparison will be investigated both in the PD-L1 positive and overall population of newly diagnosed stage III or IV advanced non-mucinous epithelial ovarian cancer participants and also to compare PFS of all participants with Stage III or IV high-grade non-mucinous epithelial ovarian cancer treated with platinum-based combination therapy, dostarlimab (TSR-042), and niraparib to SOC platinum-based combination therapy. The currently recommended SOC therapy for the first line treatment of Stage III or IV ovarian cancer is the combination of paclitaxel and carboplatin, with or without concurrent and maintenance bevacizumab. Participants will receive SOC during the chemotherapy Run-In period (cycle 1) before randomization to study treatment (cycle 2). Concurrent bevacizumab use must be determined prior to randomization at cycle 2.

The study was conducted to gain knowledge about a new dose of a diagnostic drug that is used for contrast-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the human central nervous system (CNS). MRI can visualize the anatomy of the body and is used to detect medical conditions. Diagnostic drugs like gadobutrol and gadoterate contain an element called gadolinium that is applied to improve the analysability of MRI-images. The purpose of this study was to examine if contrast-enhanced MRI using a reduced dose of the gadolinium-based contrast agent gadobutrol delivers images of similar quality to those obtained when a full dose of the gadolinium-based contrast agent gadoterate was used.

The treatment of xerostomia is aimed to increase existing saliva flow or replace lost secretions, the control of the state of oral health, the control of dental caries, and the treatment of possible infections. Therapy options in xerostomia depend on the presence of residual secretion or the absence of it. When residual secretory capacity is present, it is advisable to regularly stimulate the salivary glands by mechanical or gustatory stimuli as supportive oral care. Aqualief® is a food supplement based on carnosine and hibiscus. These two ingredients are mixed in specific proportions to form a pH buffering system which maintains the pH of the oral cavity at the proper value which is required for the regular secretion of saliva.
