Epidemiological Study in Children and Adolescents With Chronic Hepatitis B

The purpose of this study is to collect epidemiological data in children and adolescents with chronic hepatitis B(CHB), in particular data on the prevalence of HBeAg positive disease with associated ALT levels , active HBeAg negative disease and decompensated CHB in the pediatric population. Family history and history of HBV transmission is essential to assess the course of the disease and can be used to determine the best mode of treatment This information will be used to assist with the feasibility and design of studies for the Novartis clinical pediatric development program, as the current epidemiology of ediatric CHB is not accurately known in Western countries or the rest of the world making pediatric studies difficult to plan and conduct. This study forms part of the Novartis Pediatric Investigational Plan, a post marketing approval commitment to the EMEA Pediatric Committee.

Development of acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in patients with severe brain injury has been associated with poor outcome. The application of lung recruitment maneuvers (RM) for a short period of time to open collapsed alveoli and reverse hypoxemia in early ARDS has been recommended. However, little is known about the cerebral and vascular effects of RM in brain injury patients with ALI/ARDS. The aim of this study is to assess the effects of a single standardized RM on oxygenation and on systemic and cerebral hemodynamics in severe brain injury patients with ALI/ARDS.

Previous studies have shown that most patients with functional oropharyngeal dysphagia could be quickly, safely and accurately recognized by using a clinical bedside method developed by the investigative team as the volume-viscosity swallow test (V-VST) that systematically evaluates the main clinical signs and symptoms of safety and efficacy of swallowing and monitors pulse oximetry to improve the detection of patients with silent aspirations.The aim of this study is to validate this test for persons suspected of having swallowing impairment, using a new thickener, with respect to the Videofluoroscopy (VFS) method (treated as the gold standard).
