The aim of this study was to identify factors determining the effective end-tidal concentration (EEtC) of desflurane, duration of wash in and wash out phase, and to estimate the risk of perioperative awareness in patients undergoing elective neurosurgical procedure.

Surgery is the only effective treatment for morbid obesity and can be divided into restrictive surgeries (Lap Band and Sleeve gastrectomy), malabsorptive surgeries (Biliary pancreatic deviation and duodenal switch) or a combination of both (RYGBP). This later technique is the most common and most effective surgical procedure performed worldwide and has been processed to be an effective treatment of morbid obesity and its complications, achieving excess weight loss of 65 to 80 % ; 1-2 years after surgery (1,2). Vertical gastric plication is a novel surgical approach for reducing the stomach capacity. Anterior surface plication and greater curvature plication are variations of vertical gastric plication that reduce the gastric capacity through infolding of the anterior surface or greater curvature of the stomach, respectively. These approaches have been tested, with positive results (3,4). A transoral or endoluminal approach (ie, a procedure that requires no incision, because access is granted through the mouth) offers the potential for additional benefit to the patient, because the procedures continue to become more and more minimally invasive. Advances in endoluminal devices are now allowing clinicians the ability to begin exploring bariatric procedures performed via flexible endoscopy. Although these procedures may not be as effective as their surgical counterparts, these less-invasive options may relieve patients of the significant risks associated with surgery (5).

So far, it has not been studied in inflammatory bowel disease patients. The study was designed to evaluate discomfort after the carbon dioxide insufflation colonoscopy in comparison to standard air insufflation colonoscopy.

A Long-term Access Programme for Subjects With Severe Asthma

This is a Long-term Access Programme (LAP) which aims to support provision of mepolizumab, until it is commercially available, to eligible subjects with severe asthma who participated in a GSK-sponsored mepolizumab clinical study 200862 and 200363. Eligible subjects will initiate mepolizumab within a 6-month period following the individual subject's last scheduled visit in their preceding clinical study. For each subject benefit versus risk will be assessed throughout the study to support continued treatment with mepolizumab.

Study to Assess the Self-administration of AOP2014 Using a Pen, Developed for the Treatment of Polycythemia Vera Patients

Polycythemia Vera (PV) is a disease of bone marrow stem cells that manifests in a drastic increase of red blood cells and frequently also of white blood cells. The "thickening" of the blood in relation with a modified function of the cells has several consequences like increased blood pressure, pruritus of the skin, fatigue, disturbed blood circulation in the brain as well as fingers and toes and an increased risk of arterial and venous thrombosis (thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot in a vessel); like stroke, cardiac infarction, deep vein thrombosis in the legs. In case of a strong increase of platelets there is an additional risk of bleedings. As the disease progresses the size of spleen and liver increased in most cases and the bone marrow shows signs of fibrosis. In some cases of PV a progression at a later time point to a leukemia (increased formation of white blood cells) can occur. The aim of this study is to assess the ease of AOP2014 self-administration using dedicated questionnaires. - To assess safety and tolerability: adverse events (AEs), laboratory parameters, electrocardiogram (ECG) throughout study. - To assess maintenance of the blood efficacy parameters Hct (Hematocrit), WBC (white blood cells) and PLTs (platelets) and spleen size (comparing values at Visit P7 vs. values at Visit P1). - To assess the feasibility of AOP2014 self-administration: defined as the ability of the patients to use the pen as a self-administration tool (ease of handling, safety, tolerability and efficacy).

Deep Neuromuscular Blockade During Robotic Radical Prostatectomy

Basic requirement for safe performance of the robotic intra-abdominal surgery is a calm and clear surgical field after the introduction of a capnoperitoneum. That can be enabled by a neuromuscular blockade. Provision of standard neuromuscular blockade is a compromise between optimal surgical conditions (sufficiently deep block) and capability to antagonize the block rapidly at the end of the surgery. With rocuronium, it is possible to maintain deep neuromuscular blockade safely until the very end of the surgery, and unlike with spontaneous recovery or reversal of the block with neostigmine, administration of sugammadex at the end of the surgery will enable quick and consistent reversal of the block. Project is focused on comparison of the parameters of deep and standard neuromuscular blockade - surgical conditions (primary endpoint), quality of recovery and turnover time (secondary endpoints).

Patients are candidates for single-level Artificial Disc Replacement between C3 and C7 who suffer from cervical symptomatic degenerative disc disease. A maximum of 200 cases will be enrolled into the study. An 18-month recruitment period is planned with a 4-year postoperative follow-up period for each subject. Thus, it is anticipated that the study will require a minimum of 5.5 years. Patients will be assessed preoperatively, intraoperatively, prior to discharge and again at 6 weeks, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years and 4 years postoperatively from the date of surgery.
