Patient Education to Promote Self-management in Pain Therapy

Monocentric, uncontrolled before / after study to evaluate the effectiveness of a patient education for oncological patients by nursing staff to promote self-management in pain therapy. The structured patient education (in the form of a micro-training) is intended to specifically promote pain self-management in oncological patients. In contrast to conventional training courses, this requires the patient to be actively involved in the process so that the skills learned can be used to optimally adapt the therapy on an individual level. Through the intervention, we postulate the advantage that the increased self-management of pain therapy improves the everyday functions of the patient, and by breaking down patient-related barriers and checking the accessibility of pain medication, the safety in dealing with pain therapy and thus patient satisfaction increases. Data is collected in two time series. First, data of patients with sham intervention (control intervention) is collected, then data is collected from patients with a structured micro-training (study intervention). Patients do not know which training series they belong to.

Cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR), caused by ventricular depositions of misfolded transthyretin, results in an infiltrative cardiomyopathy, progressing from pronounced myocardial wall thickening, diastolic and systolic dysfunction to the development of terminal heart failure. Recently, treatment options for TTR amyloidosis have become available. However costs for therapy are enormous and previous trials were not able to differentiate between patients that might benefit from treatment and those without a need for treatment. the investigators study aims to determine markers, as assessed by cardiac magnet resonance imaging (CMR) feature tracking (FT) and T1- and T2- mapping, that might reliably indicate disease severity and could help to identify patients that might benefit from (ongoing) TTR stabilization treatment.

Auditory Slow Wave Enhancement After Concussion

The prevalence of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children and adolescents is around 30% with 70-90% being classified as mild (concussion). Because the brain of a child is still developing, a TBI can have devastating effects and possibly creates lifetime challenges. Sleep seems to play an important role in the post-concussion recovery process. Auditory stimulation during sleep has been shown to reliably boost slow waves, a solid marker for the depth of sleep, and can thus be used to deepen sleep. This study aims to investigate the effects of sleep enhancement via auditory stimulation on recovery after a concussion in children and adolescents in their home. Therefore, half of the patients receive one week of auditory stimulation during deep sleep at their home using a mobile device. The other half follows the same study protocol, but no tones are administered (sham). Cognitive tests as well as symptom questionnaires are used to assess the recovery process. It is hypothesized that the patients in the intervention group will recover better than the ones who haven't received the intervention. Additionally, a group of children and adolescents who never sustained a concussion is included as a control.
