Preventing Linear Growth Faltering Among Low Birth Weight Infants in Bangladesh

Low birth weight (LBW) infants are particularly vulnerable to frequent infections and consequent morbidity resulting in sub-optimal breastfeeding, limited ingestion of complementary foods and ultimately micronutrient deficiencies that result in post-natal linear growth faltering. The objective of this study is to facilitate improved feeding practices through the early reduction of infections using the innovative tools of water-based hand sanitizer (beginning at birth) and an improved micronutrient powder (I-MNP) (beginning at 6 months of age). A community-based cluster randomized controlled trial will be carried out in Bangladesh using a 2x2 factorial design. LBW infants (n=480) will be recruited at birth and allocated to either HS or No HS from 0 to 6 months. From 6 to 12 months, half of the children in each group will be randomized to receive I-MNP. All groups will receive nutrition and hygiene education from birth to 12 months. Recumbent length is the primary outcome; morbidity, dietary intake and hemoglobin will be assessed as secondary outcomes. By working with BRAC, the largest implementation agency in Bangladesh, there is the opportunity to translate the results directly and quickly into child health programs in Bangladesh.

The primary objective of this observational study is to determine the incidence of medically attended (inpatient or outpatient) acute respiratory illnesses or events leading to worsening cardiorespiratory status (ie, acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [AECOPD] or worsening CHF) associated with RSV infections in high-risk adults (ie, those with severe COPD and/or advanced CHF) across multiple consecutive RSV seasons.

Efficacy of a Physiotherapy Treatment in Women Suffering From Provoked Vestibulodynia

Chronic gynaecological pain is a major medical problem that affects 20-30% of women at different moments of their life. This largely neglected issue has a significant impact on the sexual and conjugal life of women suffering from it as well as on their psychological health. Furthermore, this kind of pain is not well understood, often misdiagnosed or even totally ignored. Also, treatment is limited and not extensively studied. This study aims at better understanding and treating gynaecological pain. The focus of the study will be provoked vestibulodynia, pain at the entry of the vagina. The efficacy of specialized pelvic floor physiotherapy will be compared to a topical cream (lidocaine) applied to the vulva. The treatment efficacy will be assessed in 234 women (aged from 18-45 years old) suffering from provoked vestibulodynia recruited in 4 hospitals (CHUS, Jewish General Hospital, Royal-Victoria Hospital, CHUM St-Luc).

A Trial Comparing Breakfast Versus no Breakfast Prior to Colonoscopy

In addition to bowel cleansing agents, the current practice of bowel preparation for colonoscopy involves a low residue diet 48 hours prior to and a clear fluid diet the day before the procedure. This study aims to test whether patients who consume a low residue breakfast the day prior to colonoscopy have a difference in the quality of their bowel preparation. Patients requiring outpatient colonoscopies will be asked to participate. They will be randomized to either breakfast or no breakfast the day before the procedure. Colon cleanliness, patient hunger, and tolerance will be assessed. The investigators hypothesize that there will be no difference in bowel preparation scores and will be better tolerated

Emergency Department Smoking Cessation Study

Tobacco smoke claims approximately 6000 lives annually in BC. In this study, the investigators will determine whether referring smoking patients from the Vancouver General Hospital Emergency Department to the investigators provincial QuitNow smoking cessation service will lead to improved patient outcomes, including number of cigarettes smoked, any quit attempts, and actual smoking cessation. Participants in the usual care arm will receive standard care. Participants in the intervention arm will be eligible for referral to QuitNow Services, where telephone counseling will be offered. Further follow-up on all enrolled patients will be conducted at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months to re-assess smoking status. The investigators hypothesis is that the intervention arm will have a higher quit rate that the control arm.
