Note: romidepsin was not used as a single-agent comparator outside the United States of America (USA) as supply was not available.

A Study of Oral Rucaparib in Patients With a Solid Tumor (Phase I) or With gBRCA Mutation Ovarian Cancer (Phase II)

Part 1 (Completed Enrollment) - The purpose of the first part of the study was to evaluate the safety of different doses and dosing regimens of oral rucaparib administered daily to patients with solid tumors. Part 2A (Completed Enrollment) and Part 2B (Completed Enrollment) - The purpose of the second part of the study is to determine the safety and clinical activity of the RP2D of oral rucaparib administered daily to patients with a known deleterious BRCA mutation (germline or somatic). Part 3 (Completed Enrollment) - The purpose of the third part of the study is to further evaluate PK of higher dose strength tablets at the RP2D in patients with any advanced solid tumor, inclusive of lymphoma, with evidence of a BRCA mutation (germline or somatic).

Iron Treatment for Young Children With Non-anemic Iron Deficiency

The pre-school years are critical years for children to acquire early learning skills such as language, fine motor and social skills; this is termed early child development. Primary care doctors (family doctors and pediatricians) are in a unique position to identify children with health or developmental problems. Screening is the process of testing healthy people for the earliest signs of health problems, followed by treatment, with the expectation that screening will improve the health of those screened. The focus of this research is screening young children for the earliest signs of iron deficiency (low blood iron levels) followed by treatment with oral iron. Previous research has shown that children with later stages of iron deficiency have serious delays in their development. Some research has shown that these delays may persist into young adulthood often with a significant reduction in intelligence. Early stages of iron deficiency may be difficult for parents or doctors to detect, and a blood test is usually needed. However, Canadian guidelines do not recommend screening all children for iron deficiency, because there is not enough good quality research to prove that screening is effective. In this study, the investigators will ask parents to allow their child between the ages of 1 to 3 years to have a blood test for iron levels. If the blood level is low, the child will be randomly assigned to receive either oral iron liquid for 4 months plus diet counseling, or a placebo liquid plus diet counseling. A psychologist will measure each child's early learning ability before and after the treatment. If this approach to screening children's blood iron levels followed by treatment improves children's development, parents and doctors may consider that routine blood screening tests are justified. Overall, this research is an important step to improving the ways in which primary care doctors can ensure that children have the best start to life-long health and achievement.

Preventing Hypotension in Parturients With an Elevated Body Mass Index (BMI)

Previous research regarding the use of phenylephrine has excluded obese subjects (BMI >35). This subgroup of patients represents a large portion of the obstetric patient population locally and nationally. It is unclear whether previous research should be extrapolated to the obese patient population. This study is being done to compare the incidence of hypotension, intraoperative nausea and vomiting, and neonatal acidosis between obese patients who receive a prophylactic phenylephrine infusion versus those who receive phenylephrine boluses for the treatment of established hypotension. This study will help us determine whether using a phenylephrine infusion or a phenylephrine bolus is the best way to prevent/treat spinal induced hypotension during cesarean deliveries in obese patients.

Comparing Robotics and Laparoscopy With Laparotomy/Open Surgery for Endometrial Cancer

The use of robotic surgery in the management of gynecologic cancers has increased exponentially in the United States since the implementation of technology in 2005. In Canada, access to the system is limited because of a lack of government funding. The government has been reluctant to fund this technology because robust data, on the true impact to patient care, is lacking. This project will prospectively examine outcomes of women, with early stage endometrial cancer, treated surgically. Open surgery will be compared to minimally invasive surgery (MIS) which will include conventional laparoscopy and robotic surgery. The data collected will include detailed assessment of surgical data, peri-operative events, quality of life analysis, health economic evaluation and evaluation of MIS rates.

Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (RT) for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

NSCLC is the leading cause of cancer mortality in North America, accounting for nearly 30% of all cancer deaths. The standard treatment for patients with early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is surgical resection of the involved lobe/lung. However, many patients are unable to undergo such a major surgery due to medical illness, and an emerging standard-of-care for these patients stereotactic-body radiation therapy (SBRT). SBRT involves highly precise delivery of very high dose Radiotherapy (RT) over a very few fractions (hypofractionation) to accurately describe, size-restricted malignant targets in which motion has been accounted for during the delivery process. SBRT administration achieves avoidance of normal tissue exposure to radiation during the planning process, by providing for sharp fall-off dose gradients outside the target.

The objective of this study is to compare the effect of monitored, home-based exercise versus hospital-based exercise on the quality of life of patients with congestive heart failure. Secondary objectives are to assess the effect of the intervention on exercise capacity and caregiver burden. The investigators hypothesize that the exercise training in the home-based environment will be superior to hospital based exercise training.
