Assessing Fatiguability of Tongue Muscles in MS

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients with subjective dysphagia will be tested for tongue strength fatigue using a strictly defined fatigue paradigm. A maximum of 40 sets will be performed, each set consisting of 5 repetitions of 80% of maximum isometric pressure (MIP) at the anterior tongue, followed by a MIP at the anterior tongue. Cut-off criteria are a MIP <50% of the baseline MIP, pronounced subjective discomfort and/or exceeding the allocated test time of 30 minutes.

Wearable Robotic Upper Body Exoskeleton for Workers

The main aim of the project is to evaluate a novel upper body exoskeleton during simulated industrial work. In a first stage of the project, an extensive study involving the end-user companies will be carried out to clearly identify the operator target tasks and typical target task loads for which the exoskeleton will be designed. Based on standard ergonomic evaluation scales (RULA and NIOSH, the Need for Recovery Scale and the Ovako Working Posture Analysing System), high risk tasks will be identified in the field, based on the evaluated information about the workspace configuration, the performed operations and their physical constraints. These will include, but will not be limited to, non-ergonomic postures, for example performing operations above the head or reaching in front, to the side, or behind the body; flexing the arms for extended periods of time; and bending or twisting the torso to lift an object from low or distant locations. Important items to assess in this task are the frequency and duration of tasks and activities, lifting characteristics, perceived physical effort and work-induced fatigue.

When considering the groin alone, the incidence is around 20% (30% when considering any wound complication). Impact of a Prehospital Identification of Trauma Patients in Need for Damage Control Resuscitation.

Early identification of trauma patients in need for Damage Control Resuscitation (DCR) has potential to be beneficial for general emergency units that are not expected to be ready for this rare situation 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. It could also be useful for high performing trauma centers to identify such patients earlier and be able to provide earlier adequate treatment. By contrast, initiation of DCR in patients who do not require this aggressive therapy may negatively affect their survival. An early identification of patients who do not require DCR would probably be beneficial (impact on cost-effectiveness and on patients' survival). The evidence of the Trauma Induced Coagulopathy Clinical Score (TICCS) accuracy has been evaluated in several studies but the potential effect of its use on patient outcomes needs to be evaluated. There has never been any evaluation of the impact of a prehospital discrimination of trauma patients with or without the need for DCR. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the impact on mortality of a prehospital discrimination between trauma patients with or without a potential need for DCR. Secondary objectives include evaluation of the feasibility of such discrimination and its impact on cost-effectiveness. We hypothesize that the information will lead to improved quality of care with reduced mortality and morbidity.

A Study Exploring Brain Activity in Relation to Sensory Arm Impairments in the Early Stages of Stroke

This clinical study is organized for people with stroke often experience difficulties with their sensation in their upper limb. New technologies may be able to help these important problems. However, there is currently not enough knowledge about how the brain recovers in people with sensory impairments in their arm and hand. Using a non-invasive technique of recording brain activity, known as electroencephalography (EEG), brain activity in combination with somatosensation of the hand will be measured. Therefore, the purpose of this study will be to analyse brain activity in relation to somatosensory impairments after stroke during the first two weeks after stroke.
