Filter by:The existing DBS setting in patients with DBS of the globus pallidus interna (GPi), which aims to treat motor symptoms by a high-frequency stimulation, will be temporarily reprogramed to stimulate the NbM at a low frequency using the distal electrodes positioned in the vicinity of the NBM. This study aims to investigate the neuropsychological effect of low frequency stimulation of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, who were previously treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus interna (GPi).
This study is geared toward characterizing the recovery of brain activity and cognitive function following treatments of electroconvulsive therapy and ketamine general anesthesia.
This study is aimed to investigate the efficacy of an 12-week Chinese calligraphy training program for enhancing cognitive and emotional functions of older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Participants are tested with several cognitive tests and electroencephalography (EEG), psycho-physical parameters and brain activities are recorded. Results are compared at pre-intervention, post-intervention, and 6-month post-intervention to provide evidence of benefits of Chinese calligraphy practice.
Neurotoxic phenomena are among the most common and difficult to treat side effects of chemotherapy. The development of chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a well-recognized adverse reaction in the peripheral nervous system. Side effects of chemotherapy in the central nervous system, however, particularly changes of cognitive function (in non-medical literature referred to as "chemobrain") are diffuse and difficult to attribute to individual cytostatic drugs. The primary purpose of this study is to assess cognitive function in patients with ovarian and breast cancer before and after systemic chemotherapy with paclitaxel with standardized neuropsychological tests and compare the outcome to patients with benign gynecological tumors and breast cancer without chemotherapy treatment, respectively. Secondary parameters include the assessment of olfactory function, total neuropathy score and cytokine profiles.
For almost 17 % of cases patients over 75 years are sent for inappropriate reasons to the emergency unit. They are described as inappropriate hospitalization because they don't require the use of technical platform or diagnostic neither therapeutic procedures under medical supervision. Those are inappropriate because the patient could have a paramedical and social care at home or in more efficient structures. The hospital remains the place of remedy for social and health situations whose resolution was not possible because of a lack of infrastructure available, of patient or his relative information, or a lack of coordination in medico-social establishment. These inappropriate hospitalizations involve an increase of length of stay that enhancing the fragility and vulnerability of the elderly. They have deleterious effects as decompensation, comorbidities and loss of autonomy. Moreover, the suffering of natural or informal caregivers is also an important public health question; Caregivers may have a serious disease resulting from caring their relative. That leads to increase their consumption of health care and medical goods. This comprehensive study will highlight the deficiencies of the actual health care through the analysis of the speech of the different parts involved (main study). Simultaneously, a comparative analysis of the costs of health care will be conducted (economic combined study).
This trial attempts to evaluate the effects of intensive transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) on improving cognition in schizophrenia patients and changes in resting state brain network connectivity, especially increasing connectivity in the tasks related network, and increasing activation the DLPFC in a working memory task. Half of the participants will be randomized to tDCS group, while the other half will be randomized to receive sham tDCS.
To investigate long term affects of multiple concussions on the cognition, balance, proprioception, and biomarkers in retired National Hockey League players
The Ability research project, funded in Italy within the Smart Cities and Smart Communities funding program (MInistry of University and Research, Operational Regional Programme, Lombardy, Axis 1, Operational Regional Programme - European Funding for Regional Development 2007-2013), aims at developing and testing the efficacy and the impact of a Personal Smart Health Community able to provide innovative trajectories for people with cognitive impairment, putting them at the core of a continuous and intertwining treatment and support from both formal (e.g. physicians) and informal (e.g. near relatives) caregivers, with special focus on home-based care. Within this framework of the Ability project the investigators test the efficacy of the home-based motor-cognitive rehabilitation program delivered with two different approaches: the Ability platform versus the usual care program
The overall aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of cognitive impairments and brain anomalies in Chronic Hepatitis C infected individuals and to investigate likely changes in cognition and brain structure and function after treatment with Direct-acting Antivirals (DAAs).
The purpose of the Lifestyle Intervention Study is to investigate the influence of a micronutrient supplement in combination with a comprehensive lifestyle intervention program on retinal amyloid, among patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Patients will be placed on supplement or placebo throughout their 18-month study participation. Patients will also be given lifestyle training on nutrition, physical activity, cognitive and social activity, meditation and sleep, which have all been proven to positively affect cognition over time. Throughout their participation, patients' cognitive functioning will be monitored with comprehensive imaging, neuropsychological testing, blood testing and study compliance.
