Δ9-THC (Namisol®) in Chronic Pancreatitis Patients Suffering From Persistent Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain resulting from chronic pancreatitis (CP) is often recurrent, intense and long-lasting, and is extremely difficult to treat. Medical analgesic therapy is considered as first choice in pain management of CP, resulting in regularly prescription of opioids. The adverse consequences of prolonged opioid use, including addiction, tolerance and opioid induced hyperalgesia, call for an alternative medical treatment. Cannabis has been used to treat pain for many centuries. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), the psychoactive substance of the cannabis plant, has been shown in previous studies to be a promising analgesic. The development of Namisol®, a tablet containing purified Δ9-THC showing an improved pharmacokinetic profile, provides the opportunity to test the analgesic potential of Δ9-THC in favourable conditions. The current study aims to investigate the analgesic efficacy of Namisol® as add-on analgesic during a long-term treatment (52 days) of abdominal pain resulting from CP.

The Effect of Choice of Intraoperative Opioid on Postoperative Pain

The primary aim of this randomized, double-blind study is to examine the effect of a single intraoperative dose of methadone on postoperative pain and analgesic requirements in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. These patients will be compared to subjects receiving a standard dose of the "traditional" intraoperative opioid (fentanyl). Secondary outcome measures to be assessed will include standard recovery variables (such as length of postoperative intubation, ICU length of stay, incidence of nausea or vomiting, level of sedation). In addition, patients will be assessed for the development of chronic postoperative pain.

Morphine as First Drug for Cancer Pain

Background and Objectives: The drugs used as recommended by the WHO does not promote pain relief for all patients with cancer pain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of morphine as the first drug for the treatment of moderate cancer pain by visual analogue scale in patients with advanced disease and / or metastases, as an alternative to the recommendations of the WHO analgesic ladder advocated. Methods: The patients without opioid therapy with more than 18 years, were randomly divided into two groups. G1 patients received medication according to the analgesic ladder, starting treatment with non-opioid in the first step, the second weak opioid and opioid potent in the third, and G2 received morphine as first analgesic. There was evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of initial use of morphine every 2 weeks for 3 months. Results: The study was performed in 63 patients. The groups had similar demographics.

A Clinical Study To Characterize The Pharmacokinetics And The Effects Of Food On Oxycodone In Healthy Volunteers

This is an open-label (both the physician and healthy volunteer know which medication will be administered), single-dose, 5-dosing period study to characterize the pharmacokinetics (process by which oxycodone is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated by the body) and the effects of food on the pharmacokinetics of oxycodone. The study will take place over approximately two and a half months and will consist of three phases: a screening visit to determine eligibility for the study, a 5-dosing period treatment phase, and an end-of-study visit.

The purpose of this study is to determine if the Pain Relief Patch, which shines light of a limited wavelength on the painful area of the back, relieves chronic musculoskeletal back pain. At the same time, this study will gather information on side effects associated with use of the Pain Relief Patch. The study will compare the Pain Relief Patch to a patch that is similar in appearance, but which shines a different, presumed nontherapeutic, wavelength of light.

A Pilot Study Evaluating a Multidisciplinary Chronic Pain Group Therapy in a Primary Care Setting

The investigators will evaluate the effectiveness of "Living Everyday Above-and-beyond Pain" (LEAP) program in the primary care setting. LEAP is a multidisciplinary chronic pain group therapy developed for the two clinic sites of McMaster Family Health Team: McMaster Family Practice and Stonechurch Family Health Centre. LEAP aims to improve patients'quality of life, interaction with the health care system and their health care utilization. This is a pilot study to evaluate mainly feasibility. The investigators will make use of both experimental and qualitative methods gather evidence of the programs success, strengths and weaknesses.

Milnacipran for Chronic Pain in Knee Osteoarthritis

The patients are asked to take part in this study because you have chronic pain as a result of knee osteoarthritis. This study is done to investigate the pain relieving effects of the study drug Savella (milnacipran HCl) for people who experience chronic osteoarthritis pain. The purpose of this research is to look at how the study drug can be used to benefit people who experience osteoarthritis knee pain. This is a phase IV study done to study the safety and effectiveness of the drug. At this point the drug is already approved by the Food and Drug Administration for people with fibromyalgia but it has not yet been approved for people with knee osteoarthritis.

Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement for Chronic Pain Patients Receiving Opioid Therapy

Persons suffering from chronic pain who are treated with long-term opioid therapy are at risk of misusing prescription opioids and developing opioid addiction. Moreover, long-term use of opioids may result in hyperalgesia, which exacerbates opioid craving and consumption. Mindfulness interventions have been shown reduce chronic pain symptoms, addictive processes, and substance use. The investigators hypothesize that relative to a support group control condition, participation in a novel mindfulness-oriented cognitive intervention, Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE), will result in improved well-being and decreased pain, opioid craving, and opioid misuse behaviors among chronic pain patients receiving opioid therapy.
