Implementing an Education- and Health System Task-shifting Approach for Child Mental Health Promotion in Uganda

This study will adapt a school version (mhGAP-IGs) of the World Health Organization´s (WHO) "Mental Health Gap Action Programme Intervention Guide" (mhGAP). Both teachers and health workers will receive training in mhGAP, and systems for collaboration between the school and health sector as well as other relevant stakeholders will be developed and integrated. The project is conducted in close collaboration with key stakeholders from the Ministry, the health and education sector, the police, and religious leaders. The aim is to increase mental health literacy among school staff, facilitate a healthy school environment, and increase detection of mental health needs among primary school aged children.

Chatbot Facilitated Education on Child and Adolescent Abuse

Background: Child and adolescent abuse and neglect (CAAN) cases are increasing both in Taiwan and worldwide. As the first healthcare professionals who come in contact with CAAN cases, nurses play a crucial role. Studies show that the lack of professional knowledge and ability of nursing staff on CAAN affects the effectiveness of timely identification and notification. Therefore, it is extremely important to improve the knowledge and ability of nursing staff to assess and report CAAN. With advancements in technology, continuing education for nurses is now more extensive than traditional lecture teaching. Online education, which breaks down the barriers of time and space in learning, has thrived after the COVID-19 pandemic. Chatbots are an option for individual learning and can increase accessibility and convenience for nurses learning how to recognize and report CAAN. Objective: The aims of the study are to evaluate the effectiveness of using chatbots as teaching aids to assist nursing personnel in preventing child abuse. This evaluation will be the impact of learning on CAAN competency. Method: The study utilizes an experimental design in which participants are purposively sampled and subsequently randomized into either the experimental or control group. The experimental group will use "chatbot" to facilitate teaching. The control group only receives lecture-based teaching. The course content is comprised of two main subjects: "CAAN" and "Nurses' Roles and Functions in CAAN," which was developed using the ADDIE model. The study employs the CAAN Knowledge and Competency Scale which retrieves from the Child abuse report intention scale (CARIS) by Feng and Wu (2005). Additionally, the learning effect is assessed at three different time points: before the course, one week after, and four weeks after. Expected Results: The study predicts that the learning effects of the experimental group, which used chatbots, will be better than those of the control group. It is expected that these results will be able to implement in various educational fields, including CAAN and interdisciplinary teams.

Calling All Dads! Evaluation of APAs ACT Program: Engaging Fathers to Prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences

The goal of this observational study is to assess the American Psychological Association's ACT Raising Safe Kids program with male caregivers. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: • Will male caregivers in the ACT Raising Safe Kids program report lower child maltreatment, rates of interpersonal violence, and youth aggression. • Does the ACT RSK program have a positive return on investment and will children and caregivers in the ACT RSK condition have a higher quality adjusted life years. Participants will complete four surveys over time and attend the 9-week ACT Raising Safe Kids program. Researchers will compare survey responses from male caregivers taking the ACT Raising Safe Kids classes to male caregivers not taking ACT Raising Safe Kids classes to see if there are changes in anger regulation, family conflict, parent-child conflict, and relationship satisfaction.

Educational Program's Impact on Nursing Students' Knowledge and Awareness of Child Abuse and Neglect

Detecting and determining child abuse and neglect can be quite challenging and largely depends on the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals. In a hospital setting, healthcare professionals frequently come across children who have experienced abuse and/or neglect. Nurses are often the first to encounter the child and their family, initiating the process of taking a medical history and establishing closer interactions during care and treatment. To accurately recognize the case and provide appropriate care using the right approach, nurses need to possess sufficient knowledge and skills related to child abuse and neglect. The lack of adequate education on child abuse and neglect, as well as insufficient research on the subject, can lead to a lack of information and cases being overlooked. To identify and report cases of child abuse and neglect, it is important for nurses, especially before starting their profession, to have a sufficient level of knowledge about the signs and risks of child abuse and neglect. This study aims to examine the impact of an educational program targeting nursing students on their knowledge and awareness levels regarding child abuse and neglect.

Reducing Self-Stigma Among Individuals With History of Childhood Maltreatment

Individuals who report experiencing any kind of abuse during childhood report shame and self-blame, often leading to self-stigma and a reluctance to reveal their experiences and seek help. Such stigma may aggravate the mental health consequences of child maltreatment (CM). The aim of the proposed study is twofold: (1) to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief video-based intervention in reducing self-stigma among individuals who experienced childhood abuse and/or maltreatment, and (2) to increase openness to seeking treatment.

Children at Risk and Oral Health, The Dental Record Study

The objectives of this retrospective dental record study, are to increase knowledge of the oral health, - history and -needs of children enrolled at the Childrens Advocacy Centers (CAC)by: - assessing if it is possible to identify oral indicators of child maltreatment. - assessing if and to what degree the children enrolled at CAC are in need of close, adapted and trauma sensitive treatment and follow up at the Public Dental Health Service (PDHS) - assessing if there is a need for new routines in terms of interdisciplinary collaboration and sharing of information between CAC, Child Welfare Services (CWS) and PDHP. By increasing knowledge in regard to child maltreatment and oral health, the study will raise PDHS and CAC ability to prevent, detect and help children being victims of maltreatment, and contribute to strengthen PDHS, CAC and CWS interdisciplinary interaction for the benefit of children at risk.

A Regional Partnership to Improve Outcomes Through Fatherhood Engagement

Montefiore will engage fathers in families at risk of substance misuse in the Bronx. Families will be referred from Bronx community-based providers if identified at risk of substance use concerns, and will be randomly assigned to receive services as usual as part of the comparison group, or to receive enhanced services as part of the program group. Enhanced services include: (1) Motivational Enhancement; (2) referral to Healthy, Empowered, Resilient, and Open (HERO) Dads fatherhood engagement program; (3) Contingency Management; and (4) Case Management.

The investigators will investigate the existence of alcohol drinking among children living under adult supervision and care, living within the communities. The investigators will focus on the age group 6-13 years overlapping with the recommended age for primary school attendance. The project is approaching the research topic using quantitative and qualitative methods. The TREAT C-AUD research project will therefore document to which degree alcohol drinking is a problem among children in Mbale, Eastern Uganda.

Wraparound for High-risk Families With Substance Use Disorders: Examining Family, Child, and Parent Outcomes

The investigators propose a Hybrid Type 1 effectiveness-implementation quasi-experimental trial. Participants are drawn from two different communities contemporaneously. The intervention participants in one community receive a Wraparound intervention. Comparison group participants drawn from a second matched community receive treatment as usual. With this design, the investigators aim to study outcomes associated with the intervention as well as explore important facilitators and barriers associated with the implementation and other factors associated with reach / participation, engagement and acceptability. Wraparound is a structured 12-month family-driven "process" that is guided by family goals, includes a team of supports to wrap around families, and coordinates care for families. Wraparound has been primarily delivered and tested with families of older-age children with severe emotional and behavioral needs in an attempt to prevent residential placement. The investigators are interested in testing the model in a sample of families (n=160) affected by substance use disorders who have children placed outside the home or are at risk of such placement. The investigators hypothesize that families receiving Wraparound will obtain better parenting and family functioning outcomes (primary outcome); child safety, permanency, and well-being; and parental recovery than families receiving treatment as usual. The investigators will also explore factors associated with higher levels of engagement and outcomes, including family characteristics, referral sources and hand-off, and similarly, explore barriers and facilitators associated with engagement and/or outcomes.
