Filter by:This study will examine, for the first time, the independent contribution of a patient's own genetic makeup to the development of post-radiation complications, permitting the future development of predictive tests to avoid radiation injury. To do this, the investigators will examine gene markers in a series of breast, prostate, brain and lung cancer survivors who have received conformal radiotherapy between 1996 and 2003 at the Cross Cancer Institute and Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a consequence of liver cirrhosis. In early tumour stages, tumour resection or liver transplantation are therapeutic options; later tumour stages may be treated with locally ablative treatments such as percutaneous ethanol instillation (PEI), transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) or radio-frequency thermoablation. This randomized study investigates the effect of PEI on survival of patients with HCC. All patients will receive hormonal treatment (long-acting somatostatin intramuscularly [i.m.]) and will be randomized for treatment with PEI or no additional treatment.

This randomized phase III trial studies paclitaxel to see how well it works compared to polyglutamate paclitaxel or observation only in treating patients with stage III or stage IV ovarian epithelial, peritoneal cancer, or fallopian tube cancer. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as paclitaxel and polyglutamate paclitaxel, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Paclitaxel and polyglutamate paclitaxel may also stop the growth of ovarian epithelial or peritoneal cancer by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Sometimes, after treatment, the tumor may not need additional treatment until it progresses. In this case, observation may be sufficient. It is not yet known whether paclitaxel is more effective than polyglutamate paclitaxel or observation only in treating ovarian epithelial, peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancer.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. It is not yet known which combination chemotherapy regimen is more effective for metastatic cancer of an unknown site of origin. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of two combination chemotherapy regimens in treating patients who have metastatic cancer of an unknown site of origin.
This phase II trial is studying fulvestrant to see how well it works in treating patients with recurrent, persistent, or metastatic endometrial cancer. Estrogen can stimulate the growth of cancer cells. Hormone therapy using fulvestrant may fight cancer by blocking the uptake of estrogen by the tumor cells.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known which combination chemotherapy regimen is more effective for cancer of unknown primary origin. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of two different regimens of combination chemotherapy in treating patients with cancer of unknown primary origin.
