Filter by:This study aims to investigate the effects of a single dose of psilocybin, delivered in the contextof pre- and post-dose psychotherapy, on symptoms of depression and burnout suffered by healthcare clinicians as a result of frontline work in the COVID pandemic.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential for inhalation of plant-based aromas to reduce stress and burnout among healthcare professionals and staff in hospitals and urgent care centers.
Coaching is used in business and many other career paths to help the individual define and create their own goals and strategies for achieving those goals. In 2017 the investigators began to investigate the impact of coaching compared to non-coached peers in a randomized trial among non-internal medicine residency programs and internal medicine subspecialty fellowship to understand the impact of this program and its generalizability. Data from all these studies has suggested that coaching is effective in allowing trainees to understand their development over time, find meaning and purpose in their work, and identify their strengths and how to use these to overcome challenges and stressors. Additionally, there is a benefit to the coaches themselves, who can connect with other faculty coaches in a rewarding way, that provides faculty development in leadership development and positive psychology, and space to interact with a group of like-minded physicians. From the work the investigators have done with housestaff through the MGH Professional Development Coaching Program we have seen a tremendous interest from faculty members for access to similar services. Prior studies show improvement in faculty burnout and engagement at work through small-group sessions focused on reducing distress and promoting well-being. The investigators have also seen that while the training of novice coaches in positive psychology is sufficient to begin crucial conversations about drivers of well-being, the need for more in-depth coaching with certified coaches exists. The goal of this project is to expand coaching to MGH faculty members and provide more in-depth training for coaches through the International Federation of Coaching, through the Wellcoaches Coach Training Program. This is a unique approach to professional development within the field of medicine that has not yet been employed or studied. There was a recent publication of professional coaches hired outside of the field for faculty development, but there has been no training of medical colleagues with professional coaching skills. This has the potential to provide new data for the field and become a sustainable intervention for MGH in addressing ongoing professional development for our faculty and the burnout epidemic. Finally, this can serve as model for implementation in other institutions.
The purpose of this research is to develop a mobile app-based intervention to reduce burnout and improve well-being using human-centered design principles and stakeholder feedback.
Reliably achieving peak performance requires balancing the strain of the prior day with sufficient recovery to be ready for the next day. Surgery has a long standing tradition long hours of hard work often at the expense of adequate sleep. Decreased sleep and recovery has physiologic consequences which can be measured using biometric data. The goal of this study is to quantify surgeon performance and biometric data to understand how modifiable behaviors including mindfulness training and diet can maximize recovery and performance. The goal of this study is to quantify the impact if modifiable daily behaviors including sleep, nutrition, in order to understand the factors that contribute to high level performance, burnout, and physician wellbeing in surgical trainees and attendings.

Burnout syndrome has been recognized as a mental illness since 2020. All workers can be affected. The consequences are multiple and often serious, ranging from stoppage of work to depression or even suicide. According to a 2019 survey by Malakoff, 56% of employees are in "professional or personal fragility", but the statistics are incomplete. In the medical community, the burnout rate is doubled compared to the general population. The diagnosis of pre-burnout can precede a burnout by several months, an early treatment can then reduce complications and improve the quality of life at work. On a study model on health data already carried out as part of a cancer detection application in smokers which involved 7000 users and which showed the ability to of such an application to detect curable symptomatic cancers from questionnaires (24% with application against 9% without application), we will carry out a descriptive evaluation of the use of an application to detect pre-burnout, burnout and depressive syndrome in a worker population. In the event of a risk alert of pre-burnout, burnout or depressive syndrome, the application will display a message to the user suggesting that he consult his general practitioner or put him in contact with a doctor through a teleconsultation via a dedicated platform. This first study will assess the feasibility and acceptability of an early detection approach among professionals of a state of "fragility" (pre-burnout, burnout or depressive syndrome). Subsequently, a larger study will evaluate the effectiveness of this application for the early detection of burnout among professionals, its management and the reduction of costs for the healthcare system and society.
Given the high incidence of burnout, depression, and suicidal ideation among Canadian healthcare providers (HCPs), there is an urgent need to support wellness through strengthening peer networks and engaging key stakeholders. This project will explore the capacity of digital tools to educate HCPs and enable them to support their mental health. The investigators will evaluate specific research questions: Are HCPs more aware of their wellness needs? Did burnout and stress decrease? Do HCPs feel more supported by their peers? The overarching objective is to contribute towards a culture prioritizing HCP wellbeing. The investigators hope to achieve this through two outcome-oriented objectives: 1) to create resources to promote HCP wellbeing and 2) to foster a web-based HCP community. This initiative integrates big data tools, interactive online content, and the Solving Healthcare podcast to improve HCP wellness. It is anticipated that HCPs will become more aware of their wellness needs, and once they are able to identify strategies to live healthier work lives, cultural changes will take place, leading to a new attitude surrounding HCP mental health. To complete these objectives, resources will be drawn from the HELP-MD physician database and an advisory circle, and will be disseminated via a web platform and the widely known Solving Healthcare podcast. The project's significance stems from the changes it will incite in both individuals and health care institutions, inspiring long term changes in workplace culture and teaching the next generation that a balanced work life is attainable.
The aim of this study is to develop and validate an Ecological Momentary Intervention APP for healthcare workers, in order to face of work-related stresses generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The United States is battling dual pandemics: healthcare provider (HCP) exhaustion and COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic death toll has surpassed 595,000 and continues to climb as the worldwide outbreak continues. Moreover, we have yet to understand the health impacts of "long-COVID". As evidenced by the national burnout epidemic in HCPs, persistent workplace stress not only impacts personal provider wellbeing, but also influences effective practice and patient outcomes. To address this need, we propose a 4-year, multi-site, four-arm parallel-group randomized clinical trial (RCT) comparing 2 non-pharmacological interventions: Transcendental Meditation (TM) and Experience Resolution Methodology (ERM) to Treatment as Usual (TAU). Participation in this study lasts up to 24 months for enrolled participants and is considered minimal risks.
