Preoperative Bevacizumab and Trastuzumab With ABI-007 and Carboplatin in HER2+ Breast Cancer

This trial combines trastuzumab and bevacizumab monoclonal antibodies, with ABI-007 and carboplatin, as neoadjuvant therapy in previously untreated locally advanced breast cancers demonstrating HER2 gene amplification. It is hoped that this novel combination will result in increased pathologic response rates that will translate into long term outcome improvements in HER2 positive patients with locally advanced breast cancer.

A Study of Avastin (Bevacizumab) in Combination With Herceptin (Trastuzumab)/Docetaxel in Patients With HER2 Positive Metastatic Breast Cancer.

This 2 arm study will compare the efficacy and safety of Avastin plus Herceptin/docetaxel, versus Herceptin/docetaxel alone, in patients with HER2 positive locally recurrent or metastatic breast cancer who have not received prior chemotherapy for their metastatic disease. Patients will be randomized 1:1 to receive either Avastin (15mg/kg iv q3weeks) + Herceptin (8mg/kg iv loading dose and 6mg/kg iv q3weeks maintenance) + docetaxel (100mg/m2 iv q3weeks) or Herceptin + docetaxel alone. The anticipated time on study treatment is until disease progression, and the target sample size is 100-500 individuals.

Fulvestrant With or Without Lapatinib in Treating Postmenopausal Women With Stage III or Stage IV Breast Cancer That is Hormone Receptor-Positive

This randomized phase III trial studies fulvestrant and lapatinib to see how well they work compared to fulvestrant and a placebo in treating postmenopausal women with stage III or stage IV breast cancer that is hormone receptor-positive. Estrogen can cause the growth of breast cancer cells. Hormone therapy using fulvestrant may fight breast cancer by lowering the amount of estrogen the body makes. Lapatinib may stop the growth of breast cancer cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. It is not yet known whether fulvestrant is more effective with or without lapatinib in treating breast cancer.

Use of Hair to Diagnose Breast Cancer

This study aims to perform x-ray diffraction analysis of blinded hair samples from women with a documented health status, to validate the previous findings of James et al who described that x-ray diffraction patterns of human hair can distinguish samples from healthy subjects from those of diseased subjects, specifically those suffering from breast cancer. The primary hypothesis is that x-ray diffraction of hair can be used to distinguish hair from patients with confirmed breast cancer from subjects without detectable breast cancer.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing MBSR to SET in Breast Cancer Patients

This study will compare three standard treatment programs commonly offered to patients with breast cancer. The three programs being compared are 1) Mindfulness Meditation-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), 2)Supportive- Expressive Group Therapy (SET), and 3) A one day stress-management seminar. The purpose of this study is to determine if these three treatments have different effects on psychological well-being, the immune system, and the amount of stress hormones in the bloodstream.

Radiation Induced Atherosclerosis in Breast Cancer Patients

Radiation induced accelerated atherosclerosis is a well known entity that occurs in different regions, according to the therapy delivered.It is usually begins to be clinically evident several years after the radiation incident, as there is sufficient functional reserve to these vessels.Our proposal is aimed to better characterize this side effect. For that purpose, we have chosen to study women who received radiation to the breast, in which part of the carotid in the irradiated side was in the high energy radiation field. We will use Intima Media Thickening ultrasound to study the pattern of atherosclerosis plaque formation in radiated carotid arteries as compared to non-irradiated carotid arteries in women who are receiving radiation therapy for breast cancer.

RATIONALE: Radiofrequency ablation uses a high-frequency, electric current to kill tumor cells. Giving radiofrequency ablation before surgery may make the tumor smaller and reduce the amount of normal tissue that needs to be removed. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying how well radiofrequency ablation followed by surgery works in treating patients with early invasive breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ.

Pazopanib (VOTRIENT) Plus Paclitaxel (TAXOL), Pazopanib Plus Paclitaxel (TAXOL) Plus Carboplatin (PARAPLATIN), and Pazopanib Plus Paclitaxel (TAXOL) Plus Lapatinib (TYKERB)

Pazopanib will be given with TAXOL in one part, in another part pazopanib will be given with TAXOL and PARAPLATIN, and in a third part pazopanib will be given with TAXOL and lapatinib (patients separated in each part). Toxicity monitoring will enable us to find the largest dose of pazopanib daily that can be safely given in combination with the chemotherapy agents TAXOL and PARAPLATIN, and with lapatinib, as well as what side effects are likely to manifest when these agents are given together and whether the combination of pazopanib with chemotherapy, helps to treat different types of cancer. Another objective is to find out how much pazopanib, TAXOL, PARAPLATIN and lapatinib are in the blood at specific times after the agents are given. Collecting the blood samples requires that the patients remain in the vicinity of the clinic overnight on 2 occasions.
