RATIONALE: 1. . To compare the effects on breast cancer of three different combinations of drugs which are commonly used to treat this disease. 2. . It is not yet known which treatment regimen is most effective for breast cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy given with or without epoetin alfa in treating women who have undergone surgery for stage I, stage II, or stage III breast cancer.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known if chemotherapy followed by peripheral stem cell transplantation is more effective than chemotherapy alone in treating metastatic breast cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II trial to compare the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy plus peripheral stem cell transplantation with that of chemotherapy alone in treating women who have stage IV breast cancer.

Combining monoclonal antibody therapy with combination chemotherapy may be an effective treatment for locally advanced breast cancer. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of trastuzumab plus paclitaxel followed by surgery and combination chemotherapy in treating women who have locally advanced breast cancer.
