Combination Chemotherapy in Treating Women With Resected Breast Cancer

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug and giving them after surgery may kill any tumor cells remaining after surgery. It is not yet known which combination chemotherapy regimen is more effective in treating resected stage I or stage II breast cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of different combination chemotherapy regimens in treating women who have resected stage I or stage II breast cancer.

Trastuzumab and Erlotinib as First-Line Therapy in Treating Women With Metastatic Breast Cancer Associated With HER2/Neu Overexpression

RATIONALE: Monoclonal antibodies such as trastuzumab can locate tumor cells and either kill them or deliver tumor-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. Biological therapies such as erlotinib may interfere with the growth of tumor cells and slow the growth of the tumor. Combining trastuzumab with erlotinib may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining trastuzumab with erlotinib as first-line therapy in treating women who have metastatic breast cancer associated with HER2/neu overexpression.

RATIONALE: Estrogen can stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells. Hormone therapy using exemestane may fight breast cancer by reducing the production of estrogen.
