Stratified Primary Care for Low Back Pain

The SPLIT project evaluates the implementation of a stratified model of care for people with low back pain patients who consulted primary care.This involves evaluating the process of implementation as well as patient level outcomes. The project consists of two phases: First, a before-after study comprising two sequential but independent cohort studies will be conducted to compare the outcomes and cost-effectiveness of current practice with the SPLIT stratified model of care. Second, an implementation strategy will be developed based on the results of a survey regarding determinants of current practice, and two focus groups concerning the barriers and facilitators for the implementation of the SPLIT stratified model of care.

The Efficacy, Acceptability, Tolerability and Feasibility of a Therapeutic Virtual Reality Application

This study evaluates the effect of therapeutic Virtual Reality (VR) on quality of life of 60 patients with non-specific chronic low-back pain. 30 patients will be included in the intervention group. These patients will use Reducept, a therapeutic virtual reality application based on diverse cognitive therapies (ACT, mindfulness, EMDR, hypnotherapy), at home over a period of 28 days, for at least 10 minutes each day. This will be an add-on intervention next to standard care, while the patient is waiting to receive actual treatment for chronic pain. 30 patients in the control group will only receive standard care, whilst waiting to receive actual treatment for their chronic pain. Intervention and control group will be compared on a number of outcome measures related to quality of life before using VR, during VR use, just after use and 4 months after final use. This explorative study is necessary to get first insights as a basis for a confirmative study.

This study investigates the effect of two physiotherapy models in the treatment of chronic nonspecific low back pain. Participants will be divided into three groups, two experimental and one control. In both experimental groups, the participants will be included in the intensive program of Therapy Exercises, under the supervision and guidance of the physiotherapist, and the group will differ in implemented behavioral therapy (which he will implement by a physiotherapist). In the control group, subjects will receive the usual treatment. The Back School will be applied in all groups.

Investigating the Effects of a Spinal Mobilisation Intervention in People With Lower Back Pain

The objective of the study is to measure and analyse the effect of a spinal mobilisation intervention on muscle tissue quality in people with lower back pain. The mobilisation intervention will be compared to a control with participants taking part in both conditions for a factorial, within-subject repeated measures study. The study will analyse lumbar muscle response to the manual intervention and analyse the potential influence of anthropometric measures of participants. The study hypothesises a decrease in lumbar stiffness post the intervention, compared to the control session.

Manual Therapy and Strengthening for the Hip in Older Adults With Chronic Low Back Pain

Older adults with chronic low back pain (LBP) are at a greater risk for disability, loss of independence, and lower quality of life. Experts agree that LBP is not a homogeneous condition, and treatments should differ based upon clinical presentation. Our past work indicates that all of these hip and lumbar spine impairments may contribute to worse physical function and greater disability, but the relative importance of each impairment is unclear. Thus, clinicians have limited evidence to draw on for treatment decisions for this patient population. We have identified a vulnerable subgroup of older adults with hip and low back pain. The purpose of this study is to randomize participants into one of two treatment arms and analyze the outcomes.
