Filter by:The goals of this diagnostic study are to determine how accurate general pediatricians are in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnostic assessment and which children might be best suited for this type of assessment. The investigators will also evaluate the use of a new virtual diagnostic tool, the Autism Assessment for Preschoolers with Language Element Sequence (AAPLES). The investigators will recruit twenty general pediatricians from across Ontario, Canada, as well as 200 of their patients (maximum 10 per pediatrician) who have been referred with possible ASD. The general pediatrician will complete their assessment and decide on a diagnosis, but will not tell the family. The ASD expert team, consisting of a developmental paediatrician and a psychologist, will also perform a diagnostic assessment without knowing the general pediatrician's opinion. The team will inform the family of their diagnostic opinion. Investigators will determine the diagnostic agreement between the two assessments. They will then determine which of the child's characteristics (age, sex, racial/ethnic background, ASD features, developmental delays, having a sibling with ASD) predict agreement in diagnosis. Some children in the study will have the option of undergoing an additional virtual autism diagnostic assessment using the AAPLES. The clinician administering the AAPLES will not know the results of the other assessments. The investigators will measure diagnostic agreement between the clinician administering the AAPLES and the expert team.
Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an important public health problem in our country as well as all over the world. The physical, psychological, social and economic problems and mood disorders experienced by the parents of these children can negatively affect not only themselves, but also the effectiveness of the intervention and treatment programs applied to the children. Therefore, many mindfulness-based intervention programs aim to improve stress reduction, resilience and well-being in parents. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the effect of mindfulness-based self-compassion training given to parents of children with ASD on stress, resilience and well-being. The research will be carried out with the parents of children aged 7-12 years who applied to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic of Atatürk University Health Research and Application Center located in Erzurum city center between December 2022 and October 2024 and diagnosed with ASD. The sample of the study was determined by G-power analysis. With the power analysis, it was calculated that at least 68 parents should be included in the sample, in the calculation made at the level of α=0.05, the effect size of 150, 153 (d=0.8) and the power of the study to be 90%. Therefore, the sample size of this study is planned to be 68. In the collection of research data, an introductory information form containing the socio-demographic data of the child with ASD and the parent, prepared by the researcher in line with the literature, Parental Stress Scale (SIDS), Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults, Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale, Self-Compassion Scale Short Form (SSS-F), Conscious Awareness Scale (CIFI) will be used.
The purpose of this research study is to investigate the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on some of the challenges faced by children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The purpose of this exploratory sequential mixed methods study is to develop and refine a parent-mediated mobile app intervention focused on improving the motor outcomes of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) participating in an adapted horseback riding program.
This project will evaluate the effectiveness of MINDful TIME, an 8-week mindfulness-based program designed to improve mental health in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and their caregivers. MINDful TIME includes weekly psychoeducational group meetings conducted through videoconferencing and use of a commercially available mindfulness meditation app. The investigators predict that adolescents in the mindfulness intervention group will demonstrate increases in self-reported mindfulness and reductions in self- and parent-reported anxiety and depression relative to a delayed treatment control group. The investigators will also explore whether caregivers in the treatment group demonstrate improvements in quality of life.
Mental health crises involve acute psychiatric states, such as aggression and/or self-injury, which can result in harm to self or others. There is evidence to suggest that 20% to 25% of autistic children are at risk of a mental health crises, however no crisis prevention programs exist for autistic children. The goal of this project is to evaluate, via a randomized design, a novel crisis prevention program.
The goal of this clinical study is to learn about the utility and performance of the EarliPoint(™) System: Evaluation for Autism Spectrum Disorder to monitor changes in a child's verbal ability, non-verbal learning, and social disability over time in children ages 15-84 months with autism spectrum disorder or related developmental delays (DD) and in those who are typically developing. The main questions it aims to answer are: - To estimate the change in each of the EarliPoint index scores in typically developing children ages 15-84 months from baseline through 180 days as a function of the child's age. - To estimate the change in the EarliPoint verbal and non-verbal index scores in ASD/DD children ages 15-84 months from baseline through 180 days as a function of the child's age in: a) those who showed clinical improvement, and b) those who did not show clinical improvement. - To estimate the relationship of the EarliPoint verbal and non-verbal index scores to clinical reference assessments in ASD/DD children as a function of their age from baseline through 180 days. - To estimate the degree of change, if change occurs, month-to-month in the EarliPoint Social Disability Index score from baseline through 180 days. - To estimate the incidence of behavioral events (e.g., tantrums, etc.) which limit the subject from completing an eye-tracking session. - To estimate the incidence of adverse device effects associated with the use of the study device.
Paediatric Autism Communication Therapy (PACT) is a naturalistic developmental behavioural interventions to reduce autism symptoms. The aim of this trial is to assess the beneficial and harmful effects of PACT in 2-6 year-old children with a recent diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disability with increasing prevalence worldwide. The main difficulties include poor social interaction and self-regulation skills. Effective interventions are required to improve the social interaction skills and emotional regulation of children with ASD. The present study involved developing and testing the feasibility and short-term efficacy of the home-based augmented reality (AR) training modules for preschool children with ASD. We recruited 15 children with ASD (3 to 5 years old). Wilcoxon signed rank test analysis was used to compare the differences in emotional functioning and adaptive behavior. Children received 8-week home-based AR training modules. Sessions were 20 minutes 4 times a week.
The goal of this study is to target the neurobiology of restricted and repetitive behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder using N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a well-tolerated nutritional supplement that has shown promise for reducing symptom severity in recent small-scale trials. The findings from this research will shed light on the mechanisms of action underlying the clinical benefits of NAC and the effects of NAC on altering restricted and repetitive behavior symptom severity in children with autism spectrum disorder. This is a 12-week double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of NAC.
